The Kevin Wilson Radio Show is tonight and I will be posting updates from the show. The player guests tonight are offensive lineman Jason Spriggs and kicker Griffin Oakes.

Fisher asks Spriggs about being a 4 year starter at Indiana. Spriggs said it has gone very fast but it has been an awesome experience. He said it has been fun to watch the different teams grow. He said that as a senior he views the game differently and he thinks he is a more mature player. He said he feels he does a better job of taking coaching from Coach Frey and Coach Wilson.

Spriggs said the team is disappointed in the last three weeks and the team just needs to stay together and keep working hard.

Fischer asks about Oakes taking over the kicking duties and Oakes said he just tried to take advantage of the opportunity he got last year. He said no one wants to be the number 2 guy. Oakes said he started out as a soccer player in high school.

Fischer asks Oakes about being with a new long snapper and Oakes said it has been different but the snappers are all doing a great job.

Spriggs said he was a long snapper in high school and he was actually the back-up to Matt Dooley when he was the snapper at IU.

Spriggs said the Rutgers loss was a hard loss and it was a team loss. He said it was heartbreaking and you have to take the negatives out of it and learn from them.

Oakes said his primary concern is to make sure every time he has a chance to get points he does and he wants to make sure he has good kickoffs because the returners they have been facing recently have been so good.

Spriggs is a liberal arts major with a history minor and he wants to open up a gym down the road after playing in the NFL. Oakes wants to be a dentist.

Spriggs said Adarius Rayner is the biggest character on the team. Oakes said Ralph Green is the biggest character on the team.

That is it for the players. Coach Wilson is next.

Fischer asks about Rutgers game and the need to get over it and the mood of the team. Wilson said they didn't like the result but he feels they have a strong group of leaders. He said there were breakdowns by all three phases and they just lost the momentum. He said Rutgers played better down the stretch. He said they have to coach better and play better. He said they have had a great week of practice and the energy has been good. He said they are gaining on it but there has to be results. Wilson said the coaches have worked on fixable problems while trying to stay positive.

Wilson said they had three receivers over 100 yards and a running back over 100 yards and they only had 25 yards of offense in the 4th quarter. He said the defense gave up too many big plays. He said on both sides of the ball if they don't play well up front they aren't as successful. He said he loves the players but they have things they have to get corrected.

Wilson said health wise they came out of the game against Rutgers good. Michael Cooper rolled an ankle but he is okay. He said Jordan Howard is practicing more but his status for MSU is still undecided.

Fischer asks about Mike Majette and Wilson said he was recruited to play DB and he wanted to be on offense so they put him at WR but after the transfer of Tommy Mister at RB they decided to start using him there. He said he did not move to RB until the last week of fall camp so it has taken some time to get him up to speed at that spot.

Wilson said they are doing a lot of work to bring the back-ups along because they will need them this season. He mentions Danny Cameron and Zander Diamont and the move of Greg Gooch to Bandit from ILB as players they were working with to get them up to speed as much as possible so they are ready to play.

Wilson is asked what is the biggest thing they need to do to beat MSU. Wilson said they have a very good QB and good receivers and good backs. He said their defense is always good and they are stubborn against the run and DBs that challenge coverage. He said they have to play well and they need to have more energy on the road because at PSU they did not have enough energy.

Wilson said they are good in close games because they don't turn it over and they play good defense and they are usually very strong in the kicking game.

Wilson is asked if the defense players are pressing when the momentum shifts to the opponent and he said he doesn't know if they are pressing but he thinks that the defensive players can sometimes let things snowball. He said that he has told the defensive coaches that the D-line needs to tee off on the offense.

Wilson is asked about recruiting visits and getting recruits on campus and being legal when it comes to NCAA rules. Wilson said there are do's and don't's about what can be done on visits and he said compliance is involved in that and the players are educated on what they can and can't do. He said if the players don't follow the rules they can get in big trouble.

Wilson said early in his time at IU they had to coach the players on how to recruit. Wilson said that his players will tell him if they don't think a guy is right for the program. Wilson mentions Shane Wynn telling him they should not take a certain prospect after he visited IU. Wilson said recruiting is like dating where you get attracted to certain people and they get attracted to you.

Wilson is asked what can be done to improve pass rush and Wilson said he was asking the defensive coaches that going into the 4th quarter of the Rutgers game. He said the defensive line can really create problems and they need them to play well. He said that it is a good group.

Wilson is asked about playing receivers and mixing and matching them and he said they will play 8 or 9 wideouts. Person asking this was from Fishers and Wilson said he was in that area today recruiting.

Wilson said he is not allowed to talk to recruits when he goes on visits but he can be watch them. He said that they have 42 days as a staff to evaluate players and he used one today. He said they will use the majority of them next week when they have a bye week and the coaches can get out on the road.

Wilson is asked about taking the foot off the pedal when they have a big lead and Wilson jokingly said how many big leads have they had at IU. He said he wants the defense to embrace being aggressive. He said the offense was stale at PSU and the defense got stale against Rutgers.

Wilson is asked about the extra practices for a bowl game and he said they are important but he said the exposure is even better. It shows you are a better program. He says it is a great time to be with your team and it is great for the fans to be a bowl team.

Wilson is asked about the running game and he said that OSU and PSU have very good defensive fronts and Rutgers was good as well but a step below the first two. He said they will face another outstanding defensive front this week at MSU. He said they tried to eliminate a few things to make things simpler for the players. He said they tried to make things simpler to eliminate clutter. He said Jason Spriggs had his best game against Rutgers.

Wilson is asked about the attacking the MSU defense and Wilson said it is hard. He said MSU is very confident in what they do and they play very assertively and his team needs to know what they are doing so they can play assertively. He said that he is trying to lead his coaches in a direction that lets the players play in an aggressive manner.

Wilson said you can't hope good teams have off days. You have to play well and realize you are never out of it and you have to keep playing. He said they will see this week what kind of leadership they have. He said they had a great week of practice and he believes they are a good team and he expects them to show that this week at MSU.

Wilson said they will need all phases to play well. He said they don't have to be perfect to win and they don't need breaks to win but they need to play well and play with energy.

That is it for tonight.
