Justin Smith transfer

This is a blow. Archie liked him, he played a ton of minutes. He did not score, but I think his defense altered other teams offense.
I bet he learned from the NBA folks what he needed to do, and feels he can do that better somewhere else.

That's interesting...it would arc toward making sense...I will not sugar coat it...I'm going to miss that kid. And I think it hurts the team as a whole.

Chemistry cancers gone.
Let the healing begin!
Horrible decision makers and bad shooters gone!
Addition by subtraction.

Yea, it's always good loosing a kid that shot 50% from the field and was our second leading rebounder from the year prior.

And any proof that he was a team cancer other than what you've regurgitated on the boards time and time again?

The stretch 4 spot needs to be able to hit a jump shot or a 3. He couldn’t do either things well. I liked him but I really think this doesn’t hurt us much. It will give Thompson more minutes in that spot.

Hahaha! Not B1G material
Race had a greater presence by the end of the season and looked to have much more potential offensively than Justin. A loss, but some other players will get more opportunities. It was obvious that Jerome was going to eat into Justin's minutes, and it was also obvious that unless Justin improved his outside shot dramatically, Archie wasn't going to let him take any. If Justin harbors any NBA aspirations, he needs to go somewhere where he can be a number one or two offensive option. That wasn't going to be IU in 2020-21. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Smith is delusional about his abilities at this point if he thinks transferring is going to drastically improve his marginal potential to have an NBA career. I think you know I won’t miss him, but it leaves a big hole and hurts the team tremendously. Archie should have planned for this. The kid has been disgruntled since day one...

Remember when Archie said there were two spots open, when the only likely departure seemed to be D.A.? Everybody assumed the other was JS. So this may be no surprise.

Do we have any idea if any transfers are going to come our way for the upcoming season?

Coaches likely know exactly where the players are in regards to earning their degrees. So Miller would've known that Smith would get his degree this semester. When that happens there is always a possibility he'll be a grad transfer.

JS was our best positional defender. Which idiot are you replying to?
Replying to feepaw who claims Archie didn't use Justin properly the last 3 years.

Justin's defense got a lot better last year, nothing like the year prior. He was - IMHO - our best on-ball defender. Off-ball he too often would lose focus of where his man was at and would get burned as a result, but was improved over his sophomore year.

I'd have loved to had him back. But if he a Miller couldn't come to an agreement on his role, then it's probably for the best. Hurts somewhat, but not like losing TJD or Phinisee.

Justin isn't capable of being the number 1 or number 2 offensive option at a good mid major program, let alone a power conference program that is competitive. He's a solid defender and rebounder, but he will never be a dependable offensive player for a good team.

You would have thought CAM would have a heart-to-heart talk with JS immediately after the season......in or out? Had he left early on, we would have had a chance to improve the team by his departure. Now, not so much. It's hard for me to believe he's surprised by this situation, but he didn't push the matter when he should have, so maybe he is.

I was never a fan of how CAM handled either DG or JS at any point throughout their years at IU. He could hardly have done worse.

Gonna miss the kid, I liked him.

Good student graduating from one of the top B Schools in the country...in three years...while playing basketball.

Best wishes, have a great career in hoops then in business.

Also glad to see Archie not run onto some radio show and trash the kid.

Justin wasn't consistent enough of a player to have been playing the minutes he was playing and starting. I appreciate his contributions to IU and it would have been nice to have his senior leadership, but he is a role player and should have been playing role player minutes. If we don't have better talent to play at this point, that is the bigger problem than him leaving.

Three year starter playing 30+ minutes a game, alleged defensive specialist, who doesn't make even HM ABT on either the media or coach's teams, nor the ABT defensive team.........that's why I agree with your last sentence.

From everything I’ve always heard he’s a great kid, great student, teammates loved him, worked hard. Just some clowns on here wanted to blame him for Archie’s shortcomings.
Not sure who is to blame for his shortcomings and don’t care. Maybe it’s me but if you read CAMs remarks he said he was a role model off the court and in the classroom. Is it possible that he was not regarded as a role model on the court. Over three years his shot did not improve that much and for a player who supposedly had a 40 some inch vertical he got a lot of shots blocked. Was he a hard worker in the gym or not. Maybe CAMs remark was a Freudian slip.

This one's a head scratcher-- it's hard to have an informed opinion when you don't have the complete picture. I wish this young man the best, and and we move on . . . Things are still trending pretty good for the Hoosiers!

I liked Justin, I defended Justin as a lot of people turned on his especially when Romeo got here when he became whipping boy #2 behind Green.

Smith the player is who he was. When he could get out in transition he was really good but unfortunately had limitations in a half court offense in a slugfest conference.

Archie keeps saying he wants to run, he did at Dayton, but he never did here. The only guard that would push the ball was honestly Franklin. Green tended to hold on to it and Rob, although being one of the fastest guards in the game, tended to slow things down.

So if I were Justin I'd pick a team and conference that runs.

He's supposedly an incredible student that is serious about his business aspirations so....it wouldn't surprise me to see him go to an academic school like Northwestern, Michigan or Stanford either.

All in all, he knew and played the pack line better than anyone on the team and that's going to hurt.

Now Hunter and Race improving is much more critical while a high upside guy like Geronimo will get more opportunities. Galloway is also a three.

Still sucks losing a senior with the mileage of Smith.

Hate to see Smith not play his senior year for IU. Archie's culture is based on building a team of vets. He would of been a solid asset to the front court rotation which may be getting thin. I feel it is a pretty big loss to the defense and physicality he can bring with his strength and athleticism especially in the Big 10. I think Hunter can play some 4 and Al as a three in a 3 guard group. Still, depth is impacted and IU bigs might tend to get into foul trouble. Hopefully no injuries.

Now this does open up the door for AF and one of the 3 Frosh not named Lander to surprise in their first season. Still rather have the Senior even if his decisions offensively were frustrating at times. Is Leal really 6'5"?. Can Geronimo provide any defense at SF as a Frosh?

I am going to just state one example of why I think we will be a better team without Justin and his attitude. Justin was going to the bucket and his shot got blocked and TJD said to him ‘Dunk it’ and Justin then replied to TJD ‘F you”. To me this is a kid who has all the gifts in the world but is not a true team player. I believe the team will be more cohesive from this. I will also say many times Justin would force things and make really boneheaded plays. As far as depth this transfer hurts as far as the team chemistry this helps tremendously. It always is a little hard when a senior to be leaves but in this case it may help more than hurt. I only see depth as the issue here.

I’d be careful about presenting that story as factual. I read elsewhere that that story was a mischaracterization of what was said by Smith to TJD in that moment.

Smith playing a lot of minutes would have limited this team. In 2020, you simply can't have a 3 or stretch 4 who is unable to shoot. Indiana's best teams always had big guys who could shoot a faceup jumpshot.

I also think it's amazing the number of layups and close-in shots that Smith missed.

Given where he attempted most of his shots, his shooting percentage should've been higher.

How did he have a low basketball skill? Based on what?

I think he meant IQ, not skill. He was clearly skilled. His problem was between the ears and before some jack@ss comes at me like they always do, yes, I know he was a good student. That has nothing to do with it. Being on the Dean’s list clearly never improved his decision-making or awareness on the court...

Justin Smith came to IU on a athletic scholarship to get an undergraduate degree and play division 1 basketball, He earned his degree in three years and has decided to alter his course. Congratulations on your degree in three years and good luck in the future.

What evidence do you have to back up this claim?
Did you not see him and (true freshman) Romeo get into it on the court during the MSU game for everyone to see? Lobbing f bombs at eachother? What about Justin's dad's tweets bashing Archie for not getting him the ball enough? Tweets he had to delete right away because of the backlash. Nevermind his nonchalant play at times and lack of leadership.

He is a solid player but there is PLENTY of evidence to back up those claims.
