Smith could not find his niche agsinst a very athletic team intent on stopping him.

Smith is best in transition and on the baseline. He is kind of an odd scorer and if there is one guy to be inconsistent, I'm OK with it being Smith.
The good news is he is a veteran and has the ability to score when the opportunity is there.

He has a lot of development to do.

He's awful on defense and his shot is inconsistent and not reliable at this point in time.

Good news is, he's got three and 2/3rds years to develop. Hope the fanbase let's him.

Yea.... If Smith developed to a inconsistent 15 ppg player after looking as bad as he did coming to Iu then theres definitely more if not atleast as much optimism for Hunter imo

Right now Damezi Anderson is a better shooter than Hunter. Hunter needs to get his legs back.

I don't know what is wrong with Hunter. Is he hurt again?
He's slow to react on defense. Archie doesn't give big minutes to poor defenders. Just ask Damezi Anderson, Clifton Moore, and Jake Forrester.

Archie will give a guy with no offensive ability minutes, if he can defend. Just ask Josh McRoberts.

Smith wasn’t trying to force things. He stayed pretty patient and made some good plays. He also played pretty good defense. I think this game shows his maturity and positive progression as a player.
Even though Smith did not put up big numbers I thought he was active on the boards keeping the ball alive even though he didn’t get the rebound. He also hustled on defense which is a strength for him.

He is limited offensively which has been pointed out on this thread and many others. He clearly struggles shooting the three. I do think his decision making is better than last year. Hope he continues to improve.

Scoring came from other people last night and Smith didn't force it. Missed a couple jump hooks in the lane that I wish he would hit more often, it's a good move and with his vertical it's something he can go to anytime. He did make some good hustle plays on defense, both running down the ball/steal and several blocks.

Got posterized but upon replay, that guy never even got close to the rim, he just threw the ball at the the rim and it went in...fingers never touched the hoop.

Shon Morris made the comment that La Tech was focusing on taking Smith out of the game and it seemed that was their plan. Smith helps us by not shooting 3s unless he's open and can step in to his shot. Last year he seemed to think he should shoot every time he was open, and didn't consider why he was open. I think he should take an open 3 if we're in to our offense and he feels good about it, but not look to shoot more unless he gets an early one to go down. At best I seem him as a streaky 3 pt shooter, but if he gets 1 or 2 to go down, it will open the floor for him, which is his strength anyway. He's actually progressing beyond what I expected out of him after his first year.

He was active and didn't take bad shots. He does better when he has an athletic advantage and can blow past a defender to get to the basket. He defended and while he wasn't scoring, TJD and Brunk were.

This team's strength is that different players are capable to score on any night. Last year depended on Romeo and Juwan scoring to have a chance to win.

Ths is real important. He didn't do that last year. Even if he doesn't score he can affect the game.

I have to agree with this. Smith took and missed a 3 badly last night because the LA Tech Defense gave him the shot, the next time Smith got the ball wide open on the 3pt line he thought for a second and then wisely passed the ball. Yes, Smith is maturing in his decision making as a player. Last year I remember if he was wide open from the 3pt line he shot it and missed 80% of the time. He shot it well against Michigan State because Izzo dared Smith to shoot the 3, playing the high percentage that he would miss, but that game he made them. If you took the Michigan State games out of the equation last season, Smith would have missed far more than 80% of his 3pt shots.

Careful. I said Hunter would be a role player this year and got trashed. You are on a slippery slope Travel is expected to be severely impacted through at least Wednesday morning. Consider altering your travel plans, if possible.

Good specific reference. He will have his games, but it wasn’t the other night.

Yeah. CAM has really helped him mature as a player. He can help the team in more ways than scoring and rebounding.

He took a wide open 3, didn’t hit it, and stopped there. Last year he would have kept shooting it. He is much more measured in his approach and has realized he can impact the game positively in other ways. You make good points in how he can do this. And he will make this team better for it.

Smith played good defense last night and Archie trusts him the most out of anyone

He does play him more minutes than one would expect, especially last year with his inconsistency. Not sure if it's trust, or lack of options. I wouldn't say he trusts him more than RP, he just needs to get healthy.

Phinisee is the best defensive player on IU, TJD, and Smith.
