Above is the schedule and scores of the James Madison football games this past season, followed by their rankings. These rankings are taken from an end of the season compilation by Athlon. The biggest victory by far was the 16–14 win over Troy. The next biggest win was most likely the 56–14 victory over number 69 ranked Coastal Carolina.

Well, your numbers seem to say yes, beat 8 teams in the 50 to 100 range, lose to one. 8-1 in that range is damn good. That's probably 30ish level. Meaning if they played 9 teams ranked 20 to 50, could they go 4-5 or 5-4? Probably.

I still say no, but it's very close.

Played Air Force, a legit team, OK without many key players and without their staff. May haven been able to beat them, probably at least 50-50 or better, regular season.

I don’t pay attention to stars.

Do you really think a bunch of writers know what they’re talking about?

I would take out the bowl Air Force loss. Too many players and coaches did not participate.
But your question is valid. It is a big step up to go from JMU to the Big Ten. Can the prior JMU players compete at this level?
Is the new coaching staff better than the prior?
Will a mid major scheme achieve good results in a power 5 conference?
Time will tell, but this is the time of the year for hope and enthusiasm.

This is true for football and basketball. The guys who are ranking these players, if they were good, would be NFL scouts, or with a college/nfl team. Instead they make 40 grand a year (maybe too high of a number) to cover the local college team, aka Fatjohns.

Yes, they were a good team compared to the level of talent they had vs their opponents.

JMU will be just like Marshall and Appalachian State. Dominant programs at the FCS level who will have some early success at the FBS level and then fall into mediocrity after the initial excitement wears off and they have to compete for different level talent.

The question to me is the talent. Was last years IU talent better than the JMU talent. If we believe it was, then CCC’s system probably wins those close games we lost last year.
