Joe Hillman linked to gambling ring?

Apparently it was quite profitable but I would doubt that any of it was reported on their tax returns, which is probably what is going to be their real undoing.

Ahhh man... I arrived at IU at the same time as Joe, and we looked a lot alike. I remember there was a kid in our dorm who had played against Joe in high school in CA and he came walking in to a friend's dorm and did a double take. I also played against him a few time at the HPER and saw him out and we did look a good bit alike, he was a little bulkier at the time. He was a really great shooter at the HPER and you had to guard him farther out than I was generally comfortable doing.... out to 21-22'. I always wondered if it was the crowds or BK that kept him from shooting like that in games (I mean, it couldn't have been D1-level defenders could it?). A couple of times girls would mistake me for JH at parties/bars and for some reason I was never as quick to correct them as I was dudes. Ran in to him a few years later after school in Indy and bought him a drink and told him he might have helped me with some girls without his knowledge; figured I owed him a drink. Hope he's not involved, but doesn't sound good.

I don't think it was Joe. It must have been the guy that impersonated him at IU to pick up drunk girls.

One of my uncles lived with us after he got back from Vietnam. Someone in a local bar thought he was Mark Spitz and the patrons bought him several beers. He did look a lot like him and it was right after the Olympics

Bingo. The government took over the numbers racket from the mob so they could earn from it and tax the winners.

That’s pretty much the long and short of it. Governments don’t have a problem with people gambling — on sports or anything else. They just want a large, pre-defined chunk of the proceeds.

It’s similar to moonshining. They can say it’s about public health and safety. But that’s a joke. Ever notice the law allows people to make beer and wine for their own consumption? They tax the bejeezus out of booze. And the reason they don’t allow people to make their own spirits — even for their own consumption— is because of the concentration of alcohol is higher and thus the lost tax revenues. That’s why the cops who police moonshining are called “revenuers”.

That said, the law’s the law — even when it’s a dumb law. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this guy got busted right when the state of Indiana was getting into the sports book business.

Remember that man in NYC who was selling, "loosies" which are cigarettes he bought out of state which made them cheaper since NYC's taxes were really high? He ended up dead by the cops. When I heard that story I thought that the government gets really angry when you take tax money from them.

I remember when Indiana started up their riverboat casinos the Governor cracked down on all the cheery master gaming machines, at the expense of all the Veteran Lodges and privet clubs around the state...

My newest car is 12 yrs old. My oldest vehicle is 22 yrs old. Most people don't realize that the government staying out of religion is a good thing. It's why the government doesn't tax churches because the power to tax is the power to control. Many folks who came to this country came because of religious reasons so they understood the need.

Yes, the churches definitely want to preserve their own power to control people.

Wish organized religion would stay out of politics.

Not gonna lie boys had to google him. 1st time I think I have ever heard his name.

Captain of the Big Ten champion team that I most often cite when spouting that teams can win without overwhelming talent. He was not a great player, but he was smart and efficient that season. He would sometimes hesitate and then just sort of slice through everyone for a plain as can be lay up like everyone had just stopped playing. It was a fun little move he did.

Joe as the kind of player where you projected him to be one of those thick and somewhat overweight guys who plays ball at the YMCA and nobody can stop him. He would just get to the rim even though he was slow and create havoc on defense.

And what denomination is that again?
Since moving to Pennsylvania I am now a Baptist. Before that I pastored independent Bible Believing Churches. The CBA is not exactly a denomination, more like an affiliation. I've never even heard from the CBA since being here so it really feels the same. We are an independent body of believers in Pennsylvania.
