are the ethics in college basketball recruiting getting worse? Maybe the better question might be are college coaches being less ethical and possibly breaking more rules than they were 10 years ago?

With agents, personal assistants, business managers, financial advisors and all those types trying to get involved with players of special talents-- is getting into the gray area an unfortunate necessity for most schools if they want to recruit successfully?

The nature of recruiting has really changed as you point out in the last paragraph. There are forces out there centered around agents that do the "cheating" so coaches don't have to. Coaches just have to orchestrate it. The smart ones or good ones do it from afar without footprints. And yes, getting into the gray area is an unfortunate necessity for most schools.
