ABOUT THE TIGERS
Auburn is also receiving votes in both national polls and holds a 5-1 record coming into Sunday's matchup. They opened up the season with five straight wins before falling to No. 19 West Virginia in the Savannah Innovational on Thursday, 56-52. They are led by a trio of double figure scorers led by senior guard Brandy Montgomery (14.2 ppg.). senior guard/forward Katie Frerking (12.7 ppg., 9.2 rpg., 3.3 apg.) and sophomore guard Janiah McKay (10.2 ppg.) also lead on the offensive end as the Tigers shoot 34.6 percent from the floor and average 58.0 points per game.

PRE-THANKSGIVING VICTORY
A trio of Hoosier scored in double figures behind senior guard Alexis Gassion scoring her 1,000th point as IU rolled to a 79-45 win over UMass Lowell on Wednesday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Gassion's 18 points pushed her to the 1,000-point mark in her career while junior forward Amanda Cahill added 15 points and junior guard Tyra Buss contributed 14 points in the victory.

AGAINST THE SEC
All-time versus Southeastern Conference foes, Indiana holds a 26-26 record. This season, the Hoosiers already have one victory over the SEC with its 94-61 win over Vanderbilt on Nov. 13. IU also matches up with three SEC opponents this season (Vanderbilt, Auburn and Florida).

GASSION HITS 1,000
Senior guard Alexis Gassion became the 25th player to score 1,000 points in Wednesday's win over UMass Lowell. Gassion's team-high 18 points was enough to push her over the career mark and puts two 1,000 point active scorers on Indiana's roster. Junior guard Tyra Buss scored her 1,000th career point earlier this season and the duo becomes the first 1,000 point scorers in program history since 2008-09

700 WINS
With Wednesday's win over UMass Lowell, Indiana recorded the program's 700th win. IU now holds an all-time program record of 700-600 in its 46-year history.

PICK YOUR POCKET
IU's 18 steals not only helped elevate it to a win over UMass Lowell on Thanksgiving eve, it tied for the most under the Teri Moren era and most in two seasons. It tied the highest output by the Hoosiers since it posted back-to-back 18 steal games to open the 2014-15 season.

CAHILL'S CONSISTENCY
Junior forward Amanda Cahill has been a constant presence for the Hoosiers not only this season but in her career. Through five games this season, the Clyde, Ohio native has scored in double figures and grabbed at least six rebounds in every game. She recorded her 18th career double-double in the season opener (12 points, 11 rebounds) against Presbyterian and is shooting 54 percent from the field on the season. In addition, Cahill is the team's leading rebounder (7.6) and the second-leading scorer (13.6).

JENN FROM THE BENCH
Senior forward Jenn Anderson has put in some productive minutes off the bench for the Hoosiers this season. The Sheridan, Ind. native scored a season-high 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in IU's win over Chattanooga and tied a career-high 11 rebounds against Western Kentucky. For the season, Anderson is averaging 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing and saw a season-high 27 minutes of play against the Hilltoppers.

42 AND COUNTING
Junior guard Tyra Buss continues to reach new scoring heights as she extended her double-figure scoring streak to 42 games, including 14 points in Wednesday's win over UMass Lowell. She extended her streak - which dates back to her freshman season - and marks the 60th overall game she's reached double figures - out of the 69 games played in her career.

50 PERCENT AND BETTER
In its first three games of the 2016-17 season, Indiana shot 50 percent or better from the field as a team which resulted in three victories. It's the longest streak under third year head coach Teri Moren and the longest since the Hoosiers put together back-to-back 50 percent plus performances against DePaul and IPFW last season.

17 IN A ROW
With three home wins to open the season inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, IU continues the program's longest home win streak. Wednesday's win marked the 17th straight win on its home court, as the Hoosiers are coming off a 14-0 record at home in 2015-16.

UP NEXT
The Big Ten/ACC Challenge awaits the Indiana Hoosiers who travel to face North Carolina State on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Reynolds Coliseum and will be live on ACC Extra Plus.

IU women's basketball headed to Auburn for tough road test
by Jake Thomer

It’s the little things that matter most in big games, and with IU set to face its toughest test of the season thus far on Sunday, IU Coach Teri Moren is focused on the minute details.

The Hoosiers (4-1) rebounded from their first loss with a blowout win at home on Wednesday. When they travel to face Auburn (5-1) in Alabama on Sunday afternoon, Moren said IU will need to minimize mistakes at all costs.

Moren said her team’s post defense, free throw shooting and three-point shooting will all need to be a bit sharper on the road against a Power 5 school. The free throws in particular have irked Moren recently, with IU shooting just 61 percent from the charity stripe through five games. In Wednesday’s drubbing of UMass Lowell, IU made just 11 of 23 free throws.

“I’m very disappointed in how we’re shooting right now from the free throw line, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about that,” Moren said. “We’ve been spending time at the free throw line, and we’ve got to figure out how we can capitalize on those free throws, because as we go down the stretch here and we go to Auburn and we go to NC State, and then as we go into Big Ten play, every game we have to have those free throws. So certainly that is an area where we have to spend more time.”

Auburn has shot about 35 more free throws than its opponents this season, but nonetheless Moren said her team needs to take advantage of opportunities for free points. IU will likely try to feed the post and get Auburn’s taller players in foul trouble. Senior guard/forward Katie Frerking and junior forwards Jazmine and Jessica Jones combine for around 20 rebounds per game, but also about nine fouls per game combined.

Senior guard Brandy Montgomery leads the Tigers in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Moren said she anticipates a full-court zone press for the entire game from Auburn’s defense, and a zone defense in the halfcourt as well.

“I know they’re athletic, and they’ve got three seniors that are veterans that are really good,” Moren said. We’re going to have to be able to handle ourselves against that, and we’re going to have to be able to go out on the road and hit shots.”

If Auburn does run the 2-3 zone that Moren is anticipating, junior guard Tyra Buss and junior forward Amanda Cahill would likely lead the charge to find open threes against the zone. Buss leads the team with nine threes and a 41 percent mark from deep, while Cahill has sunk five and shoots 31 percent from beyond the arc this season.

The Hoosier guards are also able to attack the rim effectively if their long shots aren’t falling. Senior guard Alexis Gassion, at 5-foot-10, has been able to get to the rim almost at will this season, mainly against smaller guards who are defending her.

Gassion is second on the team in scoring at just over 15 points per game. She led the team with 18 points in Wednesday’s win, and afterwards she said the home win will be beneficial for IU’s poise and attitude before playing its next three games on the road.

“I definitely think it gives us more confidence,” Gassion said. “With this win, we’re all close, our energy’s good."

IU falters in the 4th Qtr and loses 71-67

A big 1st Qtr by Buss (11 pts) leads the Hoosiers to a 1 point half time advantage over Auburn down in SEC country. A big 3rd Qtr has the Hoosiers with a 14 point lead going to the 4th Qtr. In the 4th Qtr, IU gets away from their passing offense and that leads to a total collapse and a 4 point loss, 71-67. Indiana does not get a FG in the last 5+ minutes and only notches 4 FTs in that same time period.

Points: Buss-24, McBride-11, Cahill-10, Anderson-9 and Gassion-7
Rebounds: Cahill-8, Anderson & Gassion-6 each, and Buss-4
Assists: Cahill-6, Gassion-5 and McBride & Buss-2 each

Auburn shot 46.2% and held Indiana to 39.6% from the field.
IU had a RB advantage of 35/24 and also in assists at 16/11.
IU had 19 TOs to UA's 13; several of IU's TOs came late in each half.

Fourth Quarter Costs Indiana Women’s Basketball At Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.
– Leading by as many as 17 in the third quarter, a tough Auburn fourth-quarter rally was too much for IU Women's Basketball to handle as it fell 71-67 on Sunday afternoon in Auburn Arena.

Junior guard Tyra Buss led Indiana with 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting as she paced a trio of Hoosiers in double figures. Senior guard Karlee McBride came in off the bench to score 11 points as she connected on three 3-pointers while junior forward Amanda Cahill added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

IU (4-2) shot a season-low 39.6 percent from the field on the afternoon and committed a season-high 19 turnovers in the road loss. Senior forward Jenn Anderson came off the bench to add nine points and grab six boards while senior guard Alexis Gassion chipped in seven points and six rebounds in the loss.

Indiana opened the game up to a 5-0 lead after a triple by Buss and a pair at the line by Cahill, but the Tigers would use an 8-0 lead of their own to go up 8-5 at the media timeout. Buss ended the run with a three from the right wing following the timeout and three straight at the line extended the IU lead to 11-8.

IU took another five-point advantage late in the first quarter after Buss completed the and-one with 1:55 to play, but Auburn would close the frame with a 7-2 run as IU held the narrow 17-15 lead after the first quarter.

In the second, Auburn took a quick lead before Buss connected on a floater in the lane with 8:57 to play. Royster converted on and and-one while Gassion found Anderson underneath 24-19 lead with 6:10 remaining.

It was the same duo of Gassion and Anderson who broke the Auburn press before McBride connected from long range with just under two minutes to play and helped IU take its largest lead of the half, 30-24. The Tigers would take the momentum in to the locker room at the half, as they completed the 6-1 run including a buzzer-beating layup to keep IU's lead at one, 31-30.

The third quarter belonged to the Hoosiers, who outscored the Tigers 22-9 in the frame. IU propelled its lead on a 14-0 run late in the third quarter, which was capped off by a pair at the line by Cahill.

Sitting with a 14-point advantage after the third, Indiana would go up by as many as 17 with just under a minute played in the quarter. Backed by what would be a 64.3 percent clip from the floor in the final quarter, Auburn went on a 16-4 run to cut the IU lead to eight with 5:44 remaining. Indiana failed to score a field goal in the final 4:44 of the game as Auburn took advantage, securing the 71-67 victory at home.

The Big Ten/ACC Challenge awaits the Hoosiers on Thursday when they travel to North Carolina State. Tipoff inside the Reynolds Center is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be live on the ACC Network Extra.

IUWBB: Indiana falls to Auburn, 71-67
by Jon Blau

Indiana blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead in a 71-67 loss at Auburn on Sunday.

Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 23 points, but IU (4-2) shot 39.6 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers. Those errors helped fuel a 19-4 run for Auburn (6-1) to end the game.

IU led 31-30 at halftime but outscored the Tigers 22-9 in the third quarter to establish a big cushion. Karlee McBride started the fourth quarter with a 3, giving the Hoosiers a 56-39 lead with 9:51 left in the final period. The advantage was 63-52 in IU’s favor with 5:09 remaining after a 3 by Buss.

But the Tigers went on a 15-0 run, including a 3 by Brandy Montgomery to make it 63-61 and two free throws by Montgomery to tie it at 63-all with 2:51 left. Erica Sanders hit a jump shot with 39 seconds left to give Auburn a lead.

At that point, IU started to foul, and Katie Frerking hit two free throws to push Auburn’s advantage to 67-63 with 27 seconds remaining. Ten seconds later, Jenn Anderson converted a post bucket, but Janiah McKay answered with two free throws.

After Buss sank a pair of freebies, McKay hit two more with one second left to set the final score. Montgomery led the Tigers with 28 points, and Frerking had 21.

Amanda Cahill, with 10, and McBride, with 11, also finished in double figures. Cahill, however, fouled out, and Anderson and Amber Deane each finished with four fouls. IU outrebounded the Tigers, 35-24. Auburn finished at 46.2 percent from the field.

IU surrenders fourth-quarter lead in loss to Auburn
by Jake Thomer

Despite leading most of the game and having a 17-point lead early in the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon, IU was ultimately overcome by Auburn’s swarming defense and fell by a final of 71-67.

The Hoosiers are now 4-2 on the season and have lost their last two road games.

This loss will surely sting, as IU had a rather commanding lead against Auburn for most of the second half.

“It was absolutely a tough one because we felt like we pretty much dominated the second half and then just let this one get away,” Assistant Coach Glenn Box said. “We just didn’t respond in the last couple minutes.”

After a back-and-forth first two quarters that saw IU have a 17-15 lead after one and a 31-30 lead at the half, the Hoosiers came out firing to begin the third quarter. The Tigers pressured the Hoosiers all game with a full-court zone press and ran a zone defense in the half court.

As a result, the Hoosiers were constantly pressured on the ball and appeared to face double teams at every turn. Because of Auburn’s tenacious ball pressure, shooters were often left open around the three-point line and along the baselines. As the second half began, IU took full advantage of the open space.

Junior guard Tyra Buss and senior guard Karlee McBride led the offensive charge in the third quarter. Both knocked down key 3-pointers and mid-range jumpers. IU outscored Auburn 22-9 in the third and took a 53-39 lead into the final period.

Another 3-pointer pushed the lead to 17 points, the highest of the day for IU, before things began to unravel. Auburn turned up its defensive intensity an extra notch, and IU simply wore down. Nine minutes and 30 seconds later the Hoosiers walked off the court with a heartbreaking loss.

“Energy has been a big thing around our locker room the last couple weeks or so, and we just lost that,” Box said. “We had that vibe, that energy, and then they got a couple steals.”

The Hoosiers didn’t score from about the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter until there were just 25 seconds left in the game. By then, Auburn had a four-point lead, and the Tigers hit all their free throws down the stretch. IU finished with 19 turnovers.

Seniors guard Brandy Montgomery and guard/forward Katie Frerking were the leading duo for Auburn. The pair combined for 49 points. Frerking added six rebounds and seven steals, while Montgomery was the fourth-quarter catalyst with 16 points in the frame.

For IU, Buss and McBride were the leading scorers with 23 and 11 points, respectively. Junior forward Amanda Cahill stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

IU will play the second matchup of a three-game road trip when it travels to NC State on Thursday for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Box said playing tough and close road games like Sunday’s will help IU in the long run, even if the Hoosiers lose. However, Box said winning games is obviously the priority.

“These are still big games for us. We have a tough non-conference slate, and we’re playing some really good teams,” Box said. “But at the end of the day, it’s all about getting that W. It was tough to lose this, but we have to learn from it.”
