SERIES HISTORY
First Meeting

HOOSIERS IN THE POSTSEASON
Indiana returns to the postseason for the second-straight year and third time in four years as it makes an appearance in the WNIT quarterfinals. IU is 12-7 overall in the tournament, which is in its 19th year, and 9-1 overall when playing inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Indiana advances to the quarterfinals in its second straight appearance in the WNIT, also advancing in 2013-14. It also marks the 14th overall postseason appearance for IU who also has five NCAA Tournament berths (1983, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2016) and one NWIT appearance (1991). Prior to the NCAA, IU made an AIAW Final Four appearance in 1973 and two AIAW Elite Eight appearances in 1972 and 1974.

ALL-TIME SENIOR CLASS
With Thursday's win, the four-year senior class of Jenn Anderson , Karlee McBride and Alexis Gassion earned its 80th victory - the most of any four-year class in program history. IU previously had two classes that reached 77 wins, from 1978-82 which featured no four-year seniors and again from 2005-09 with the class of Whitney Thomas, Kim Roberson and Amber Jackson.

ANOTHER EXCLUSIVE CLUB
Junior forward Amanda Cahill reached career milestone in the second round win over Saint Louis by scoring her 1,300th point and 800th rebound. She's the fifth ever player to reach those career numbers and the first since Jill Chapman did it in her career (1998-02).

MOST WINS
Indiana continues to extend its record breaking season with its 23rd win of the season on Thursday. Indiana will also tie its most games played at home with its 18th game of the season in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, matching the same mark in 2013-14. IU also records back-to-back 21 win seasons for the first time in program history and the seventh time its posted 21 wins or more. IU's double-digit wins in Big Ten play (10) are also the first back-to-back double figure victories for IU since 2007-08 and 2008-09. IU has also solidified an overall winning season, recording the first back-to-back winning campaigns for the program since 2007-08 and 2008-09.

WINNING AT HOME
IU's win over SMU pushed its home court record to 15-2 this season, tying a program record for wins in a season at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. It also marks the fourth time in school history Indiana has won at least 14 games at home (2015-16, 2013-14, 1997-98). IU also secured 10 wins or more for the fourth-consecutive season. It also marks the fifth-consecutive season Indiana has posted a winning record at home including all three seasons under third year head coach Teri Moren .

MOST POINTS
The Hoosiers have another chance at team history on Thursday night, needing just three points to break the single season record for points scored, IU has scored 2,490 points - only second-most to the 2,492 points scored in 1980-81. Indiana's offense has ranked in the top 10 in program history in each year of third-year head coach Teri Moren 's leadership:
• 2014-15: 2,229 points (71.9 ppg.) - 6th in a single season
• 2015-16: 2,361 points (71.5 ppg.) - 3rd in a single season
• 2016-17: 2,490 (75.4 ppg.) - 2nd in a single season

BUSS NAMED WBCA ALL-REGION
Tyra Buss was selected to the WBCA All-Region 4 team, announced by the organization on Thursday. Buss is now one of 52 players up for Coaches' All-American honors, which will be narrowed down to a team of 10 at the Women's Final Four. It adds to the list of awards for Buss this season, who was named an All-Big Ten First Team selection, Naismith Preseason Top 50 and Wade Trophy watch list this season.

600 OR MORE
Tyra Buss closes in on her 600th point of the season heading into Sunday's game, which would notch her name another place in the IU record books. She would become the first player to ever record back-to-back 600 point seasons and just the fifth time its ever happened in program history as she has scored 598 points in 2016-17. Buss is following up a 620 point performance in 2015-16 which ranks third on the single season scoring list. Karna Abram (642, 626) holds the top two spots on the list.

KARLEE MCBUCKETS
Senior guard Karlee McBride continues to do what she does best - hit threes. She is moving her way up the all-time 3-point field goals made list with 175 made triples which ranks fourth all-time. She added five more to her career total as she scored a season-high 17 points in the win over SMU. Her 518 attempts are also the third most by a player in school history. She has hit 57 beyond the arc (tied for 11th in a single season) and 15 games with multiple makes.

BUSS CLIMBS THE BOOKS
Buss became just the second player to ever register in the top 10 of points, steals and assists at Indiana as she hit the top 10 in scoring in the regular season finale against Illinois. She has scored 1,580 career points (ninth all-time) and has recorded 397 assists (fourth) and 213 steals (fifth) in her career.

SCORING AS A JUNIOR
Buss - who set the scoring record for most points as a freshman and sophomore - set a new record for points for an IU player through their junior season:
1. Tyra Buss (1,580)
2. Denise Jackson (1,505)
3. Rachelle Bostic (1,389)
4. Jill Chapman (1,346)
5. Cindy Bumgarner (1,311)
6. Karna Abram (1,284)

Indiana Women’s Basketball Concludes 2016-17 Season in WNIT Quarterfinal

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Hot shooting by Villanova in the first half was too much for Indiana Women's Basketball to overcome on Sunday afternoon, as it fell 69-57 in the WNIT quarterfinals in front of a season-high 4,770 fans inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Junior guard Tyra Buss paced Indiana with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior guard Amber Deane added 12 points off the bench while junior guard Amanda Cahill chipped in 10 points and added five boards.

Senior guard Alexis Gassion closed out her IU career by grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points and four assist. On the day, Indiana shot just 38.1 percent from the floor and were not match for Villanova's 11 3-pointers on a 37.9 percent clip. Indiana went just 22.7 percent from beyond the arc to counter with five makes but won the advantage on the glass, 41-34.

It was a season of records set for Indiana, who posted the most wins (23) and points (2,547) in a single season. The Hoosiers senior class of Karlee McBride, Jenn Anderson and Alexis Gassion also wrap up their careers as the all-time winningest class with 80 victories in four seasons. Gassion also finishes her career in an Indiana uniform at No. 13 on the all-time scoring list (1,343), No. 9 all-time in rebounds (749) and No. 6 in assists (370).

The Wildcats (20-14) came out and made a statement, hitting seven 3-pointers in the opening frame but Indiana was able to keep up with 11 points from Buss to trail 25-21. In the second, IU mustered up just nine points and shot 20 percent in the frame as it faced lengthy scoring droughts, allowing Villanova to pour on three more triples and take a 41-30 lead at halftime.

Both offenses struggled in the third, with a combined 16 points scored between the two teams. Indiana trailed 47-40 going into the fourth when IU came to life. They would cut the lead down to as a few as four on a conventional 3-point play from Cahill. Villanova stretched its lead back out to nine with 4:47 to play as Deane responded with a triple from the corner. A Buss jumper made it a four-point game once again, but a 7-0 run from the Wildcats helped seal its trip to the semifinal round.

QUOTABLE
Head coach Teri Moren

"What a fantastic crowd that showed up today. You never want one game to define your season, but for the crowd to show up the way that they have in the last two weeks with the WNIT has been really special for us. I just want to make that our fans know that we heard them, they showed up in a big way, and we are sorry that we couldn't allow this run to go another few weeks, but really grateful for the support. This was a really good team, we talked about it the past few days about the press and that this team was going to challenge us in every way defensively. We didn't anticipate them catching fire like that in the first half, but we knew that they could shoot it. Our switches weren't as nearly as aggressive as we needed to be. There were moments that our defense was pretty solid and they managed to get shots off and score. What I felt in the halftime was that they needed to cool off at some point and that's what happened in the second half, we just didn't score enough points. I look at the box score and Cahill goes 4 for 12, McBride is 0 for 7, Gassion is 2 for 9, us scoring 50 points is a problem because we are used to scoring 70 points and we just didn't put up enough points on the board in the second half this afternoon to win the game."

Villanova outshoots IU in WNIT
by Josh Eastern

The Villanova Wildcats’ first six made shots came from behind the arc.

Unlike IU's win over SMU on Thursday, it was clear Sunday's game was going to be a shootout. The Hoosiers stayed close, but the Wildcats shot lights out all afternoon and the Hoosiers could do nothing to stop them. The shots kept pouring in for the Wildcats as the crowd of 4,770 in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall fought to keep the Hoosiers in the game.

IU's season came to a close in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals as Villanova pulled off a 69-57 win on Sunday afternoon.

“We knew they were good 3-point shooters,” IU junior guard Tyra Buss said. “It just didn’t feel like they hardly missed that first half.”

Right from the beginning, the Hoosiers were playing catch-up. There was a certain point when it seemed Villanova wasn’t going to miss a 3-pointer. It wasn’t until the 1:33 mark of the first quarter that Villanova made a shot inside the arc. 21 of the Wildcats' 25 first-quarter points came on 3-pointers.

Villanova’s ball rotation had IU chasing shooters. At halftime, the Wildcats were shooting 58.8 percent from behind the arc. Seven of those 3s came in the first quarter, and just three were made in the second quarter. IU Coach Teri Moren said she thought Villanova had to cool down from the field at some point, which it did in the second half, but IU went equally as cold. The Hoosiers never got closer than four points behind the Wildcats in the final two quarters.

“This team was going to challenge us every way defensively,” Moren said. “We didn’t anticipate them catching fire the way they did that first quarter — first half really. We knew they could shoot it, but our switches were not near as aggressive as they needed to be.”

The poor switches were a common trend as Villanova shot its way into the half with 10 treys. Buss said the Hoosiers fixed their issues with switching in the second half. However, after halftime when they needed to start up their offense, the Hoosiers failed.

Moren focused on one specific area that needed to be improved in Sunday’s loss - missed shots around the basket. There were point-blank shots that could have swung the game. Instead of those bouncing in, they bounced out.

“We just didn’t score enough points,” Moren said. “Scoring only 57 points is a problem. We’re used to being in the 70s. We just didn’t put enough points on the board this afternoon to win the game.”

Villanova ended the game shooting just 42 percent from the floor and 38 percent from behind the arc thanks to poor shooting in the third and fourth quarters, but it was the first half that did the Hoosiers in.

“You got to give it up to Villanova,” Buss said. “They shot really well today.”
