1st Period:

The game started slowly especially for the Gophers as IU took a 10-4 lead at the first timeout with Holmes doing most of the damage on 4 of 4 shooting and 8 points at this juncture of the game. Minnesota was 1 for 7 at this point and had 3 turnovers. Scalia entered the game off the bench against her old team and received boos as she headed to the free throw line for two shots, hitting one of two. IU ran out to a 20-6 lead at the end of the period with Holmes scoring 10 points and had 2 blocks in the period. Moore-McNeil picked up two fouls in the period. IU had four turnovers in the 1st with the Gophers committing nine turnovers. The Gophers hit on just 14.3 pct from the field in the first. It soundly like a sparsely attended game and family and friends of Scalia and Meister probably made up a nice little chunk of the crowd.

2nd Period:

Minnesota opened the period with two straight turnovers and Parrish hit two straight 3s for a 26-6 IU lead and forced a Gopher timeout. Parrish hit her third straight 3 to make it 29-10 at the 7:10 mark of the 2nd. IU started picking up fouls in the 2nd and Holmes picked up her 2nd foul at the 6:30 mark of the period with IU up 33-10. Both Holmes and Moore-McNeil reentered the game at under 5 minutes left with both players playing with two fouls. IU would lead 41-20 with the Gophers hitting their only 3-pointer to finish the half.

Half: IU 41 Minnesota 20

Holmes and Parrish had 14 points apiece in the half with Holmes having three blocks in the half. IU is averaging 12.6 turnovers a game which is 13th best in the nation, but had 9 turnovers at the half with the Gophers making up for that with 18 turnovers. Minnesota is 1st in rebounding in the B1G and 2nd in offensive rebounding, but IU barely had an advantage in that area. Both teams had two players apiece with two fouls with Holmes and Moore-McNeil having the two fouls for IU. IU was 53.1 pct from the field and 60 pct on 3s, while the Gophers were 33.3 pct from the field and 25 pct on 3s. FT difference was negligible.

3rd Period:

The period started with the Gophers going on a 7-0 run in the period and 12-0 run for the Gophers counting the end of the first half, and the lead down to 41-26 and IU starting the period 0-5 from the field. IU may have got complacent with that big halftime lead and Garzon had attempted only one shot (making it) from the field in the game at this point. The Gophers outscored IU 10-4 to start the period, the Gophers had cut the lead to 14 points at 47-33 at a TV timeout with under five minutes left in the period. The fouls started to really add up for IU with four starters with two fouls and Meister with 3 fouls. Gophers got the lead down to 13 points on one of two FTs at 48-35 with 3:30 left. Most of IU points in the period were coming at the FT line and IU had the lead up to 52-37 at the 2:42 mark of the 3rd and a Gopher timeout. A three-ball cut the lead to 12 points at 52-40 at under 2 minutes and IU had not made a basket in over four minutes. Back-to-back baskets by Holmes and Parrish put the lead back up to 16 points at 56-40. A Holmes basket at the buzzer put IU up 58-40 at the end of the period. The Gophers who are 2nd in the B1G in offensive rebounding had several in the period. The Gophers outscored IU 20-17 in the period.

4th Period:

The period started with Garzon getting smacked in the face and the Gophers getting a layup to cut the lead to 16 points. IU quickly moved the lead back up to 20 at 62-42. Holmes had 26 points at this point but incredibly had only two rebs but four blocks. The Gophers got two straight buckets on fast breaks after a missed shot and an IU turnover to cut the lead to 16 points again at 64-48. Parrish picked up her 4th foul and the Gophers were in the bonus for the rest of the period. Parrish scored on a basket and then was hit with her 5th foul as the Gophers went to the line and hit two of two to make it 66-50, IU, with under five minutes to play. A three by Scalia put the lead up to 71-52 and a bucket by Holmes pretty much squelched any Gopher thoughts of coming back in this game. It was 73-52 at just over two minutes to play.

IU was led by Holmes with 28 points and Parrish with 23 points before fouling out. IU had 17 turnovers on the game, but the Gophers had 29. IU barely won the boards in the first half, but the Gophers hit the boards in the 2nd half and had doubled IU up on offensive rebounds for the game. Coach Moren can't be happy about that 3rd period where IU seemed to lose some of their intensity and focus after that big lead at the half, while the Gophers came out ready to do battle. It was better in the 4th, but neither period in the 2nd half were close to their play in the first half.
