1st Period:
MSU grabbed an early 5-2 lead on a 3 and a bucket. IU got off to a slow start with Holmes leaving the game around the 6:30 with some kind of problem, and MSU knocked down their 2nd 3 to take a 9-point lead after an 8-0 run. IU was 1 for 8 from the field at a TV timeout at 3:48 in the 1st and IU had 4 turnovers at this point. Holmes reentered the game out of the timeout. IU was getting hurt on offensive rebounds early in the game. IU found themselves down by 10 at the end of the 1st with MSU's Kamaria McDaniels doing most of the scoring for the Spartans and had 10 points in the period and she was 4 for 6 from the field and 2 for 2 behind the arc. Holmes had 8 points with Moore-McNeil and Scalia hitting 3s in the period. IU had 5 turnovers. Parrish, Garzon and Berger couldn't connect on shots and were scoreless in the period.
2nd Period:
Moore-McNeil opened the period with a 3 to cut the lead to 7 points with a bucket by Holmes cutting the lead to 5 points. Another 3 pointer by MSU pushed the lead up to 33-21 when Garzon got an and-one to cut it to 9 points at 33-24. MSU knocked down their 8th 3-pointer of the half and were 8 of 13 from behind the arc at this point in the game. Berger and Parrish were still scoreless at this point with MSU up by 12 at 36-24. Berger is usually money on that midrange jump shot of hers, but she couldn't buy a bucket up to this point. Kiandre Browne who had just entered the game for IU, went down with what looked like a serious leg injury which brought a stoppage in the play with 3:58 left in the half, with Holmes picking up her 2nd foul before the injury. Browne was taken off the court in a wheelchair. Back-to-back buckets by Holmes cut the lead to 8 points. A 3 by Scalia pulled IU to within 5 points at 36-31. Two FTs by Scalia cut the lead to 3 at 36-33 as IU went on a 9-0 run. A bucket and two FTs by MSU stopped the IU run and pushed the lead back up to 7 at 40-33. IU had the ball for the last shot of the half with about 14 seconds left and failed to get a shot off at the buzzer.
Half: MSU 40 IU 34
This was the flattest that IU has been this season coming into the game, and the fact that IU with the ball for the last 14 seconds of the half and failed to get a shot off, is indicative how the first half went for IU. They played better over the latter part of the 2nd period to cut into the lead after MSU had what I believe was a 13-point lead at one point. Holmes had 16 points at the half with Scalia coming off the bench and scoring 8 big points when IU absolutely had to have them. Moore-McNeil scored 7 points with Parrish and Berger being held scoreless. MSU was 8 of 15 on 3s to IU's 4 of 8. Another foul put MSU in the bonus with IU up by four and Garzon picked up her 4th foul on an offensive foul with Holmes still on the bench with 4 fouls. A basket by Berger gave IU a six-point lead at 70-64 with under five minutes left and a TV timeout. An intentional foul on McDaniel after she nailed Moore-McNeil with an elbow to the face. It became a free throw contest for IU at the end with IU holding on minus two starters.
Holmes had 27 points, Scalia with 20 points, while Moore-McNeil finished with 19 points. Garzon also added 12 points. IU's shooting numbers and play really improved in the second half after a chewing out by Coach Moren at the half.
