This game in on BTN.
Michigan enters the game with an 11-3 record and 2-0 in the B1G, and they are coming off a home win over what was #17 Ohio State at that time. Both Scalia and Parrish, especially Scalia, had off-shooting nights against Illinois and they need more from them on the offensive end in this game.
1st period:
IU jumped out to leads of 8-2, 11-5, and 14-4 on two Parrish 3-pointers and she had 8 points early on which was a good sign after an off-game against Illinois. This forced a UM timeout at the 6:49 mark of the 1st. Parrish knocked down her third 3-ball to put it at 17-6 IU. A Moore-McNeil old fashion three-point play made it 20-6. It was 23-9 on one of two FTs by Parrish with 4:09. Another good sign was back-to-back threes by Scalia to make it 31-16 at the 2:30 mark. Scalia knocked down her third straight 3 to make it 34-17.
End of 1st: IU 36 UM 17
Parrish had 14 points in the 1st. Scalia and Parrish were 6 for 6 behind the arc. IU was a perfect 13 for 13 from the field in the 1st and they were 4 of 6 at the line. Garzon picked up two fouls in the period.
2nd period:
IU opened the period with back-to-back buckets by Holmes to put it at 40-17. Holmes picked up her second foul early in the period with the score at 41-20 IU. Both Holmes and Garzon were riding the bench at this point. Back-to-back buckets by UM made it 41-24 IU at the 6:10 mark. Garzon re-entered the game at this point.
UM had five fouls at this point with IU making it to the FT on each foul and it was 45-24 at the 5:25 mark. It was 47-28 at an official's timeout at 3:17 and UM going to the FT line out of the timeout on a questionable foul on Parrish. Holmes was back on the floor with two fouls at this point.
IU was hit with two offensive fouls in the closing minute of the half, and UM was driving to the basket with IU having some players with two fouls and trying to protect themselves. It was 51-34 at the half with UM missing a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Half: IU 51 UM 34
IU was 17 of 21 from the field for 81 pct and they hit 66.7 of their 3s. They were 61.1 pct at the line. Holmes and Parrish had 14 points at the half and Scalia contributed 11 points.
Parrish and Scalia were scoreless in the 2nd period. Holmes, Parrish and Garzon all had 2 fouls at the half while UM had one starter with two fouls and two reserves with three and two fouls. Rebounding was even, but UM had 6 o-boards which led to second chance points. The teams had four turnovers each at the half.
3rd period:
I expected Michigan to try and get Holmes with that third foul as the 3rd period started with Holmes sitting out a chunk of the 2nd with the two fouls. Michigan was collapsing on Holmes early on in the period.
Scalia opened the 3rd period with a 3 to make it 54-34. Parrish picked up her third foul with an offensive foul. Garzon hit back-to-back 3s and it was 62-36 at the midway point of the period. Parrish was hit with another offensive foul on a screen, her 4th and she headed to the bench. Garzon hit a 3 on Parrish's foul and it was determined that shot didn't come before the foul and it was negated with the score still 62-36 at the 5:14 mark.
Back-to-back turnovers by IU made the score 62-40 on two easy buckets by UM at the 4-minute mark. Michigan seemed to be getting all of the calls in the 3rd although it hadn't helped them cut into the margin much. Holmes picked up her 3rd foul to join Parrish on the bench.
IU picked up their fifth offensive foul on the game on another call going UM's way, and UM went to the line on another foul off that as the score went to 66-45 on one of two FTs made by the Wolverines. Two more FTs by UM made it 66-46 with Holmes back on the floor for the final minute. Another turnover gave UM an easy score, but Moore-McNeil got a bucket at the buzzer to make it 68-48.
End of 3rd: IU 68 UM 48
Even with UM seeming to get all of the breaks in that period, IU held on to the big lead. IU continued to shoot the ball well except at the line where they were 13 of 20 after this period. IU had seven turnovers in the period with some offensive fouls mixed into that.
4th period:
IU opened the period with a bucket to make it 70-48. IU was hit with their sixth (by my count) offensive foul. Michigan cut the lead to 18 at 72-54 at an official's timeout with 3:58 and IU headed to the FT line out of the timeout. IU started putting the subs in at the 2:01 mark on an IU timeout.
Final: IU 80 UM 59
