1st Period:
There was nothing flat about IU in this game. IU shot 60 pct in the period and had grabbed a 23-12 lead at the end of the period after an and-one by Holmes who was surrounded by three defenders.
2nd Period:
IU opened the period with a bucket by Garzon and a 3-ball by Parrish to push the lead up to 28-12 and an OSU timeout. OSU started to get some shots to drop and it was 30-18 at the 5:55 mark of the period. IU went into a little mini-cold spell missing shots close to the basket before Scalia got an and-one to put the lead at 35-20 with under 4 minutes left in the period. OSU was 0-12 on 3s at this point in the game. Scalia scored her 6th straight point on a 3 to make it 38-20. Scalia then hit another 3 as she went on her own little 9-0 run against the Buckeyes to make it 41-22. After a couple of FTs by Berger, Scalia hit another 3 to make it 46-22. The half ended with OSU scoring the last four points of the half to make it 46-26, IU.
Half: IU 46 OSU 26
IU never really had what you would call a cold spell in the first half and they shot it well going 16 of 30 from the field for 53.3 pct and 5 of 10 on 3s for 50 pct, while OSU was cold for the most part and was 10 of 35 for 28.6 pct from the field and 1 for 13 behind the arc for 7.7 pct. Both teams had four turnovers apiece at the half. Moore-McNeal was the only Hoosier starter with multiple fouls at two fouls, while Meister had two fouls off the bench. OSU had two starters with two fouls apiece in Thierry and Harris. Scalia had 12 points at the half and hit 3 of 5 from behind the arc, while Berger had 11 points. OSU's McMahon was the Buckeyes leading score at the half with 7 points. OSU limited Holmes to just four shots in the half, but it didn't matter with the rest of the team clicking.
3rd Period:
IU opened the period with a 3 by Parrish before OSU responded with their own 3. OSU then went on a little run with an uncontested layup on a break and another 3 that rolled around the rim before dropping in. OSU warmed up behind the arc with another 3 but two baskets by Berger helped to counter that. Another basket by OSU got the lead down to 14 at 53-39 with a little over five minutes left in the period as IU so far is not as sharp in this period as they were in the first half. OSU started pressuring the ball and IU turned the ball over under the OSU basket and an easy basket for the Buckeyes. Another turnover led to another bucket by OSU to get the lead down to 10. Yet, another turnover gave OSU the ball with under four minutes left in the period and Holmes picked up her 3rd foul of the game to put OSU at the line and they convert both FTs to cut the lead to 8 points as IU looked like they did in the first period against MSU. OSU all of a sudden can't miss from the field or they are making it to the FT line. Two FTs cut the lead to 6 at 55-49, and another basket cuts it to four points as OSU has outscored IU 23-9 in the period up to this point. IU's five turnovers in the period up to this point are a big reason for much of the OSU turnaround, while OSU hasn't turned the ball over in the period. It was 57-51 with IU up at a timeout at the 1:40 mark of the period, and it appeared that IU relaxed too much in the 3rd after having that big lead. It's been quite a while since IU was bothered by a full court press, but it happened in this period. IU converted six FTs to make it a ten-point lead again at 67-57 as IU was outscored, 27-17 in the period.
4th Period:
OSU opened the period on a 5-0 run after a layup and an and-one to make it 63-58 with Holmes picking up her 4th foul and a timeout at the 8:47 mark. It's been a while since IU has converted from the field with their points of late coming at the line until Scalia drained a 3 to stop the bleeding. The other Minnesota girl, Meister, got a basket off of an offensive board to push the lead up to 10 at 68-58. After two FTs by OSU, OSU got a steal off the pressure and scored on an and-one to bring the lead back down to five points at 68-63. With Holmes still on the bench, Meister makes it to the FT line and converts two FTs to give IU a seven point lead at 70-63. OSU makes it to the FT line again where they haven't missed this period and they make it a five-point lead again for IU at 70-65 with just over 5 minutes left. With OSU pressuring the out of bounds pass, IU gets hit with a five second violation and OSU gets another bucket to cut the lead to 3 points and Holmes reentered the game. Another basket by OSU cuts it to a one-point lead at 70-69 at under four minutes to play. Berger make one of two FTs to give IU a 2 point lead. OSU ties it on a bucket on an and-one and takes a one point lead. IU had a one point lead at 73-72 with 1:30 left but turned it over on a shot clock violation. Two FTs by OSU gave the Buckeyes a one-point lead at 74-73 with a little over one minute left. A bucket by Holmes gave IU the lead again at 75-74 with 45 seconds left and a timeout with OSU with the ball. A drive by OSU's Harris scores on a layup to give OSU the lead back at 76-75 with just under 38 seconds left and IU with the ball. Berger missed a close in shot with OSU rebounding and going to the line. OSU makes one of two FTs for a 77-75 OSU lead with IU with the ball and over 20 seconds left. IU gets tied up with OSU getting the ball and they make two FTs to seal the win for the Buckeyes at 79-75.
I don't think I would ever see IU get rattled like they did in the 2nd half but it happened. IU came out the of the half a little too relaxed and then played much of the 2nd half rattled by the OSU full court press as OSU was pressuring the inbounds by bringing four players up and IU having trouble getting the ball in. IU was outscored , 53-29, in the second half and it hurt IU to have Holmes on the bench for a good chunk of the 4th with four fouls. Berger had 20 points while Scalia had 15, with Holmes adding 12 points. Holmes was limited to just 7 shots on the game, converting just 3 shots. IU had 14 turnovers in the 2nd half to just four by the Buckeyes which pretty much tells the story of the 2nd half. I think IU will still hold on to a No. 1 seed, but losing two of their last three games doesn't help the cause any. They will also need to work on the type of press that OSU implemented since they are going to see the same strategy going forward.
