1st Period:
The game started out with an and-one for Berger and a 3-0 lead. IU shot the ball well early on and had a lead of 19-10 at a 1:12 TV timeout. Scalia came off the bench late in the period and nailed a 3-pointer on her first attempt and then got a lay-up for five quick points as IU led at the end of the period, 24-12. The only negative for IU in the period was that they turned the ball over four times. IU was 3 for 5 on 3s while OSU was 0 for 4 behind the arc. Holmes had eight points in the period. OSU implemented a full court press but IU broke it easily. IU took the big crowd out of the game early on.
2nd Period:
IU opened the period on a 5-0 run on another 3 by Scalia and a lay-up by Moore-McNeil as IU took a 29-12 lead and forced a very early timeout by the Bucks. OSU was hitting 33 pct from the field at this point. After a bucket by OSU out of the time out, Scalia hit her third straight 3 and two buckets by Holmes put the lead up to 22 points at 36-14. Scalia then hit her fourth straight 3 to make it 39-14. OSU's first 3-ball and a couple of baskets by OSU cut into IU's lead, IU and OSU then started trading baskets with IU up by 22 with 2:45 left in the period. Scalia connected on another 3-ball and Berger ended the scoring for IU in the half with a shot that bounced high off the rim and fell through as everything was working well for IU on the offensive end to say the least. Scoring 54 points on the road in the first half against a ranked opponent while in front of a large, hostile crowd that was on hand, really showed just how well in sync this team really is right now at this point in the season.
Half: IU 54 OSU 29
IU had an incredible first half shooting the ball and was 24 of 31 from the field for 74.2 pct and 7 of 11 on 3s for 63.6 pct. IU only shot one FT in the half and naturally they made that too. Holmes had 18 points despite being double teamed whenever OSU had a chance to do that and was 9 of 11 from the field. Scalia was on fire and hit her first four 3s and ended up hitting 5 of 6 threes and had 17 points at the half. Parrish had two fouls and was the only player with multiple fouls. IU had four turnovers in the first period, but cut down on that in the second period and had six turnovers at the half. OSU's shooting picked up in the 2nd period, but IU still took that period, 30-17. OSU's coach probably told his team at the half that they should treat the 2nd half as a new game at 0-0 and see where that takes them.
3rd Period:
OSU sandwiched a couple of and-ones around a couple of baskets by IU with the lead at 58-37 early on in the period. OSU cut the lead to 19 at 58-39 after an IU turnover which led to a lay-up with 6 minutes left in the period. OSU was starting to make it to the free throw line as IU started accumulating fouls with Holmes with three fouls halfway through the period. OSU had yet to substitute in the game at this point with all five starters playing every minute of the game up through a TV timeout at 4:36 and the score 60-40. OSU went on a big run as IU hit a cold spell and had the lead down to 10 points at 60-50 after another OSU three-ball before Scalia nailed another three to extend IU's lead back to 13 at 63-50 and an IU timeout with 1:50 left in the period. It was 63-51 when Berger took some of the wind out of OSU with a 3-ball to extend the lead back up to 15 and a jumper by Holmes to make it a 17-point lead before OSU scored to end the period with IU up 68-53. OSU outscored IU, 24-14, in the period.
4th Period:
With OSU not substituting in the game up to this point, you had to wonder if they might start losing their legs some going into the 4th with shots starting to come up short for them. IU started the period on a 4-0 run with back-to-back baskets by Scalia and Holmes to get IU's lead up to 19 at 72-53 at the 8:43 mark and an OSU timeout. At the midway point of the 4th, all of the energy that OSU had in the 3rd period seemed to dissipate with IU matching points with them and extending the lead some.
Holmes finished with 33 points on 15 of 18 shooting, while Scalia finished with 24 points and 6 of 8 on 3s. Berger had her usual efficient game and ended up with 16 points. While Moore-McNeil's scoring number won't be much in this game, she played an overall great game and had seven assists to go along with seven rebounds to include four offensive boards and a couple of steals and just one turnover.
