IU vs. Maryland

IU defeats Big Ten leaders in game one
by Spencer Davis

It happened a day later than anticipated, but IU baseball defeated No. 22 Maryland 9-2 Saturday afternoon.

The ballgame began Friday night at 4:05 p.m. after being moved up from the 6:05 p.m. scheduled start time due to rain, but the elements did hold off long enough for the Hoosiers, now 23-16-2 overall and 9-6-1 in the Big Ten, and the conference-leading Terrapins, 28-12 and 12-4, to play nine innings.

After the conclusion of the top of the third inning Friday night, lightning was spotted in the area and the game was delayed and the rest of the six innings were postponed until Saturday.

Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Stiever started Friday for IU and threw three scoreless innings before the delay. Freshman Cal Krueger was on the mound for the Hoosiers when the game resumed Saturday afternoon.

Krueger kept the Terrapins at bay by tossing the remaining six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

IU may have caught a break from an offensive standpoint, as Maryland pitcher Brian Shaffer did not venture back out to the mound Saturday after pitching two innings Friday before the delay.

Shaffer gave up two hits and did not let up a run in his two innings of work. The junior is the Big Ten’s leader in the earned run average category with a 1.73 ERA. He has struck out 75 batters in 2017 to lead the league as well, with almost 30 strikeouts more than the next on the list.

The Hoosiers had success early off of Terrapin pitcher Ryan Hill. The junior took the bump to get Saturday started and struggled with pitch location and control.

In Hill’s lone inning of work, IU managed to push across three runs on just one hit. After loading the bases, Hill relinquished a run in each of three consecutive plate appearances on a hit-by-pitch and two walks.

IU added three more runs the very next inning off of Maryland sophomore Hunter Parsons. Senior left fielder Alex Krupa roped a double for the Hoosiers’ first extra base hit of the day and senior second baseman Tony Butler added a two-run home run to left field.

After sophomore designated hitter Matt Lloyd recorded IU’s second out of the inning, sophomore third baseman Luke Miller cranked a double to set up another scoring opportunity. Miller wasn’t done yet.

Senior center fielder Craig Dedelow followed Miller’s double with one of his own, IU’s fourth extra base hit of the inning, to plate Miller and extend the lead to 6-0.

Maryland got two runs back in the fifth inning with an RBI triple by junior shortstop Kevin Smith and an RBI groundout by senior catcher Nick Cieri.

The Hoosiers’ runs came in threes, as they added three more runs in the sixth inning when Miller crushed a three-run homer to deep left field that flew out of the ballpark.

IU dropped the second game of the day by a score of 9-2, so Sunday's series finale will be the rubber match.

“It’s huge for us,” Krueger said. “This is a huge series for us and both teams need this series. To come out with a series win would be huge.”

Strong relief pitching aids Hoosiers in split doubleheader
by Taylor Lehman

In IU’s first of two games against Maryland on Saturday, freshman pitcher Cal Krueger pitched as close to a complete game as possible.

Sophomore ace Jonathan Stiever was cruising through his start Friday — three innings with just one hit allowed — when a storm system delayed the game until Saturday afternoon. Krueger was the pitcher to start the game again in the bottom half of the third inning.

The mid-relief pitcher who hadn’t pitched more than four innings in a game in his career tossed six innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits against the No. 22 team in the nation. Kreuger tamed the Terrapin bats for every inning of Saturday’s opener and the Hoosiers scored nine runs to beat the Maryland Terrapins, 9-2.

“It was good to jump out and get the first one,” IU Coach Chris Lemonis said. “I felt real comfortable throwing (Krueger) out there, and when we got that lead, I thought he just ran with it.”

It didn’t take long for Krueger to get run support. In fact, he hadn’t thrown a pitch before the Hoosiers jumped to a 3-0 lead. Senior outfielder Craig Dedelow, junior outfielder Logan Sowers and freshman first baseman Matt Gorski were hit-by-pitch and walked with bases loaded to drive in runs.

Maryland junior pitcher Ryan Hill had also thrown 40-plus pitches before Krueger threw his first.

Krueger benefited from a 3-run home run from infielder Luke Miller and a Tony Butler home run as well, while allowing runs on a triple and a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning.

“We went out there and just acted like it was a start,” Krueger said of his outing. “The stuff was good. I just tried to attack hitters and get ahead in the count.”

The same could be said for junior mid-reliever Kade Kryzsko as well. In the second game of the double-header, junior starting pitcher Brian Hobbie surrendered nine hits and four earned runs in four innings of pitching. Hobbie was pulled after he gave up one run without recording an out in the fifth inning, and the Hoosiers were down 4-2.

Lemonis brought in Kryzsko with the bases loaded and no outs. The reliever induced a ground ball to Butler at second base, who turned the double play with freshman shortstop Jeremy Houston. Kryzsko was able to get out of the fifth inning while allowing just one run and with IU at a 5-2 deficit.

Kryzsko went on to pitch his longest outing of the season — 3.1 innings, four hits and four runs allowed — but the Hoosiers were not able to overcome the deficit to the Terrapins and lost, 9-2.

Lemonis said after the game that he left Kryzsko in the game for too long, as the junior surrendered three of hs four runs allowed in the eighth inning when he was pulled for freshman Andrew Saalfrank.

The strong middle relief pitching didn’t get the double-header sweep for the Hoosiers, but it did save their arms for the rubber match against the Terrapins on Sunday at 11:05 a.m. in a series that has high stakes for IU.

“We played hard all day,” Lemonis said. “It’s just that their guy out-pitched us in the second game and they got some big hits.”

Indiana Splits Doubleheader with Maryland; Sunday's Game Moved to 11:05 A.M.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Baseball (23-17-2, 9-7-1) split a doubleheader with the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday at Bart Kaufman Field. The Hoosiers grabbed the first game 9-2 and the Terrapins won game two, 9-2.

Game 1

Game one resumed in the bottom of third after yesterday's rain delay and the Hoosiers instantly made an impact with three runs. Freshman Jeremy Houston led off the inning with a walk and moved over on senior Tony Butler's bunt single. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Craig Dedelow was hit by a pitch, while junior Logan Sowers and freshman Matt Gorski walked, giving Indiana a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Jonathan Stiever started on Friday night, throwing three scoreless innings before the game was delayed. Freshman Cal Krueger picked up from there today and threw six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, and striking out five.

IU was back in the fourth with three more runs. Senior Alex Krupa knocked a double to right on the first pitch of his at-bat. Two pitches later, Butler hammered his third home run of the season to left field to put the Hoosiers up 5-0. A double by Luke Miller and a double by Dedelow extended that lead to 6-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Terrapins responded with two runs off two singles and a triple.

The Hoosiers wouldn't let a 6-2 lead get any closer as they plated three runs in the sixth inning. Two walks set up Miller at the plate and he sent a tape measure shot to left field, putting the Hoosiers up 9-2 for good.

Butler went 3-for 4 with two RBI and scored three runs. Krupa scored two runs while going 1-for-3. Miller tallied three hits and also three RBI in the win.

Game 2

In game two, junior Brian Hobbie got the start and pitched four innings. Freshman Matt Gorski went 2-for-3 and homered.

Maryland scored a run in the first with a sac fly. In the third, a two run shot to left field put the Terrapins up 3-0.

The Hoosiers cut their defeict to a run with two runs in the third. On the first pitch in the inning, Gorski homered to left field, his fourth of the season. Houston reached on a dropped third strike, which brought up Butler. With two outs, Butler singled to left, advancing Houston. Lloyd singled in Houston and the Hoosiers trailed 3-2.

A home run and an additional extended Maryland's lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning.

The Terrapins found the long ball again in the seventh with a solo home run and plated three runs again in the eighth, to take a 9-2 lead.

The Hoosiers and Terps finish this three-game series on Sunday at 11:05 a.m. from Bart Kaufman Field.
