It's RHP Ben Grable on the mound for IU with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.38 in 16.0 IP. He has 19 Ks against 6 BBs, and his OBA is .254. Stadler will be behind the plate.

The batting order is Wiggins, Taylor, Dickerson, Stadler, Hanley, Brenczewski (DH), Cerny, Oliver, and Malamazian.

UCLA will start RHP Michael Barnett with an ERA of 4.12 and a WHIP of 1.37 in 19.2 IP. He has 26 Ks to just 3 BBs, and his OBA is .296.

Perfect weather for baseball today.

T1st:

IU went down in order and all were on Ks.

B1st:

Grable has been up and down this season and let's hope he is up for this game.

Not a good start for Grable as he walked the leadoff hitter on a full count. The runner stole 2nd.

Grable walked another batter on a 3-1 count and he is obviously having control problems to start the game.

I'm guessing that if the control problems continue, that Buhr will be entering this game earlier than what we wanted.

Cerny despite slipping was able to complete a DP which was huge. There's a runner at 3B and two outs.

Oliver made a great play on a grounder to get the out at 1st and Grable pitched himself out of a big jam.

End of 1st: IU 0 UCLA 0

T2nd:

It's the middle of the order up for IU with Stadler leading off. Stadler Ks but reached 1st on a WP.

Hanley Kd and it was the fifth Hoosier in a row to strikeout to start the game. Brenczewski Kd to make it six in a row on Ks.

Cerny was the first Hoosier to make contact with the ball and he lined out to retire the side.

B2nd:

Grable faced the 5 thru 7 hitters. Grable got a foul out to LF for the first out.

Grable walked his third batter of the game on a 3-1 count to put a runner on with one out.

Yet another DP ball in the first two innings ended the inning.

End of 2nd: IU 0 UCLA 0

T3rd:

Oliver led off and Kd. Malamazian lined out for the 2nd out. Wiggins flied out to retire the side.

B3rd:

Grable got the leadoff hitter on a lineout. A Cerny error allowed the next batter to reach with one out. Grable then got a K for the 2nd out. A single to center put runners on the corners with two outs.

The error was costly as UCLA got an unearned run on another single to take an early lead, 1-0. It was Cerny's third error in the last three games.

With runners on 1st and 2nd, a groundout ended the inning.

End of 3rd: UCLA 1 IU 0

Taylor led off the inning and he grounded out. Dickerson Kd and Stadler grounded out to retire the side.

B4th:

Grable faced the 5 thru 7 hitters. Grable gave up a leadoff single, but IU's third DP of the game elimated the runner.

A double put a man in scoring position with two outs. A hit batter put another runners on with 1st and 2nd occupied with two outs.

Grable got out of another jam with a K and I'm expecting Buhr to enter this game shortly.

End of 4th: UCLA 1 IU 0

It was the 5 thru 7 hitters up with Hanley leading off. Hanley singled and Brenczewski reached on an error to put runners at 1st and 2nd. A balk moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Cerny reached on a FC with Hanley thrown out at the plate.

There were runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. A WP moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd.

A big clutch hit by Malamazian scored both Brenczewski and Cerny to give IU a 2-1 lead.

Wiggins Kd swinging to retire the side.

B5th:

Grable faced the top of the order and he put them down in order.

End of 5th: IU 2 UCLA 1

T6th:

Taylor singled but Dickerson hit into a DP. Stadler flied out to retire the side.

B6th:

Grable faced the middle of the order, and he got the first two batters on groundouts. He gave up a single to the next batter.

A two-run homer to CF gave UCLA the lead back at 3-2. A single and a hit batter put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and Grable clearly has run out of gas.

LHP Grant Holderfield relieved Grable. Holderfield got a groundout to end the threat.

End of 6th: UCLA 3 IU 2

It's the 5 thru 7 hitters up with Hanley leading off. Hanley reached on an infield hit. Another infield single allowed Brenczewski to reach with runners at 1st and 2nd and no outs.

Decker was brought in to pinch run for Brenczewski. Cerny lined out to LF with the runners holding and one out.

Moore, who came in to pinch hit for Oliver, reached on a FC with runners on the corners and two outs.

Hanley took off for home on a bad pitch, but the catcher was able to get the ball to the pitcher who tagged Hanley out at the plate to retire the side.

B7th:

Holderfield faced the 2 thru 4 hitters and Holderfield hit the leadoff batter. Moore went to 2B for Oliver.

A FC got the runner at 2nd for the first out with a runner still at 1st. A balk moved the runner to 2nd.

The balk hurt big time as a single scored the runner from 2B to make it 4-2 UCLA. The runner stole 2nd with one out.

An infield pop-out got the 2nd out. A K ended the inning.

End of 7th: UCLA 4 IU 2

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up and UCLA finally went to the bullpen with RHP Luke Rodriguez coming in with an ERA of 2.33 and a WHIP of 1.14 in 19.1 IP.

Malamazian grounded out, but Wiggins walked on a full count. Taylor singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. UCLA went to the bullpen again and brought in RHP Justin Lee with an ERA of 0.89 and a WHIP of 1.16 in 10.1 IP.

Dickerson flied out for the 2nd out with the runners holding at 1st and 2nd. Stadler grounded out and IU was down to their last three outs.

B8th:

Holderfield faced the bottom of the order and he got the leadoff hitter on a K. He then got a lineout for the 2nd out. A double put a runner in scoring position with two outs and the top of the order up.

Another double scored an insurance run for the Bruins and it was 5-2 UCLA.

RHP Trey Telfer relieved Holderfield. A single scored another run to make it 6-2 and an unlikely comeback by IU in the 9th.

Another double, the third double of the inning scored another run with a runner called out trying to take another base.

End of 8th: UCLA 7 IU 2

IU was down to their last three outs and Hanley hit a solo homer to lead off. Denny came in to pinch hit for Decker and he grounded out.

Cerny singled to put a man on with one out and he stole 2nd.

Moore grounded out with Cerny taking 3rd and two outs.

Malamazian doubled to score Cerny to make it 7-4 UCLA and the top of the order up with two outs.

Wiggins was hit by a pitch to put the tying run at the plate in Taylor.

Taylor walked the bases loaded on a full count and the leading run was at the plate with Dickerson up.

The rally fell short as Dickerson hit into a FC with Taylor out at 2nd.

Final: UCLA 7 IU 4

IU ran into a starting pitcher today that they simply couldn't hit and he started the game with six straight strikeouts, before Cerny made contact with the ball. Both of IU's early runs were unearned and IU gave up two gift runs on an unearned run off an error and a balk that put a runner in scoring position. IU had a lead of 2-1, but the Bruins got six runs late in the game to create separation. IU had the opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the 9th, but simple couldn't get it done.

UCLA outhit IU, 12-9. IU had three multi-hit players. With the exception of Taylor, the first four batters in the lineup went hitless today.

Taylor - 2 for 4 with no RBIs or runs scored.

Hanley - 3 for 4 with a solo homer for an RBI.

Malamazian - 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs.

The pitching was sporadic today, but IU was helped out by three DPs today, and pitched out of several jams.

Grable - 5.2 IP, 7 hits to include a double and homer, and 2 earned runs. He had 2 Ks and 3 BBs, and he hit two batters.

Holderfield - 2.0 IP, 3 hits to include two doubles, 3 earned runs, 2 Ks and no BBs, a balk, and a hit batter.

Telfer - 0.1 IP, 2 hits to include a double, and an earned run.

IU had one error on the day that accounted for an unearned run for the Bruins. UCLA had two errors.

It was clear that Mercer was saving some pitchers for the rubber game tomorrow, but we will have to wait to see who he starts the game with.

Here's the link to the Game 2 recap at the IU site which includes a link to the complete box score.

It mentioned that some of the arms available tomorrow are Swanson, Haas and Seebold. They could add Buhr to that group.

UCLA has already announced a probable starter tomorrow in RHP Landon Stump with an ERA of 4.57 and a WHIP of 1.52 in 21.2 IP. He has 20 Ks to 13 BBs and an OBA of .247.
