Anyone remember when IU-UE was a great rivalry?

The Purple Aces had some great teams in the 80s/early 90s when Schmaltz was coach. They were just as good as Yeagley's Hoosiers some years. Growing up in Evansville, I remember going to a lot of those matches on the UE
campus. Too bad they've fallen off the map in recent years.

Re: Anyone remember when IU-UE was a great rivalry?

I remember, although I was a pretty young kid at that time. E'ville was one of the top programs in the midwest and they were definitely the second best team in the state after IU and they always played us tough.

Looking back at the early days of the NCAA soccer title, there were a lot of smaller schools that had big success that have kind of disappeared. Hartwick, Howard, SIU-Edwardsville, Navy, San Francisco all won titles. Hell, Yeagley's West Chester University team won the 1961 title! E'ville never won it all but did get to some Final Fours. They were one of those smaller schools that got foreign talent and had a great coach. Fred Schmalz was a legendary coach who had a great run of nearly 30 years at E'ville.

Back then, not many schools even had men's soccer and it wasn't a popular sport. Obv as it became bigger, the larger schools took over more and you don't hear as much about the small schools. But you do still have mid majors with success far more than you see in b'ball/fball. Recently Akron, UCSB, Charlotte, etc.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- First half goals from Femi Hollinger-Janzen held up as the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 win at Evansville Wednesday night at McCutchan Stadium.

The Hoosiers improve to 11-2-3 on the season, while Evansville falls to 5-9-1.

Freshman defender Lillard used his head to put Indiana up 1-0 in the seventh minute as he crashed the box to head home a corner kick from left back Patrick Doody. That is Lillard's fourth goal of the season. The assist is number four on the year for Doody.

It is the ninth time this season Indiana has scored a goal within the first 26 minutes of play.

Indiana put its first six shots of the game on frame, forcing UE goalkeeper Eric Teppen into five saves early on. Included in that tally was an angled shot from Doody that gave Teppen trouble in the 30th minute.

The Hoosiers thought they had a second goal in the 40th minute when Michael Riedford headed home the rebound off a Hollinger-Janzen shot, but the referee's flag was up, signaling Riedford was in an offside position.

Indiana's chances paid off in the 42nd minute when Hollinger-Janzen netted his team-leading fifth of the season, hitting the upper 90 from the left side off the pass from Matt Foldesy.

Indiana went into the halftime break leading 2-0, including a 9-2 shot advantage with eight of its nine shots on frame.

Evansville has a spell near the IU net with three quick corner kicks, but the Hoosiers limited the Purple Aces to zero shots off those corners before putting the pressure back on the UE net. Kyle Sparks had a chance with a header off service from Doody in the 63rd minute, but his nod was just high.

In the 67th minute Hollinger-Janzen sent a ball toward goal off the side of his boot but angled it high for an Evansville goal kick. In the 72nd minute Foldesy had a shot off Tanner Thompson's corner kick that was cleared off the line by Evansville's Arlick Ntabana, preventing a third goal.

Three of Evansville's five shots came in the final five minutes of the game as IU goalkeeper Colin Webb was forced to make two late saves to preserve the shutout.

Indiana finished with a commanding 22-5 shot advantage, led by seven from Thompson. Hollinger-Janzen added four.

Indiana wraps up a three-match road swing on Saturday as it faces Big Ten foe Wisconsin. Match time in Madison, Wisconsin is 8 p.m. ET and the game will be shown live on BTN Plus.
