IU to play UVA

Nice home and home

I drove to Charlottesville for the game a couple of years ago and thought that it would be nice to have an "exchange program." As far as that game goes, we came out absolutely flat and didn't get any better.

Sort of?

Them there's fightin' words.

We were supposed to be pretty good that year, and it...

was expected that we would give them a good game. Instead we got drilled. Supposedly half the team had the flu which I believe because watching it on TV it looked like IU was moving in slow motion.

I agree with you

There was no spirit as the team came on to the field. Then, early on we gave up a turnover when the ball bounced up off of our player's foot into the hands of a UVa player. That sort of set the tone for the game. I stayed for the whole game, hoping that we could turn it around, but it just didn't happen. As far as playing there goes, I remember the fans being very gracious and even coming on to this board to invite IU fans to tailgate with them.

Given that UVA has had one winning season in the...

last 7 and their record is 31-54, they shouldn't be taking pokes at anyone.

Yeah makes you wonder

Does IU give players the flu shot? That's what I was thinking back when I heard the flu excuse.

Seems like a no brainer to me, but what do I know? Why invest 12 months of training, practices, etc in pursuit of a winning outcome, and then not protect that investment by failing to ensure the health of the players?

Re: I agree with you

Yes, I was also there and the Virginia fans were gracious. I was shocked at how IU played, based on how the team had looked up to that game. I was thinking that it didn't even look like the same team I had watched earlier that season. I finally left after the third quarter ended to start home.

Re: Yeah makes you wonder

The IU football team had been wracked by a flu bug all week prior to that game with multiple players missing practice that week and more coming down with the bug on game day and the day before. It definitely had an impact on both preparation and gameday performance.

As for the flu shot, the two worst cases of the flu I've had in my adult lifetime both happened in years when I had a flu shot. Both times the explanation given me was that it was a new strain of virus that year.

Getting the shot always made me feel lousy for a couple of days afterwards ( I must just be sensitive to it because most people I know report no ill effects afterwards) so after the second incident of an ineffective shot I said to hell with it and never again. I haven't had anything resembling the flu in the last five years since the last year I had a shot. Even this winter when the rest of my family and multiple co-workers were afflicted I didn't have a single symptom. Needless to say, I remain a skeptic of the idea that a flu shot really protects.

Re: Yeah makes you wonder

The problem is it takes time to produce a vaccine and the flu virus is an RNA virus so it easily mutates and new strains are spread frequently. So you get the vaccine to protect you from a few strains that have been circulating the past yrs but it's often not the most rampant one that's around that particular yr bc of mutation. So basically giving all the players a flu vaccine would reduce the risk but not even come close to preventing it
