IU@Rutgers, Game 1: RU 5 IU 3. 8th inning gaffes cost IU the lead and the game......

RHP Jared Kollar is on the mound for Rutgers with an ERA of 2.66 in 47.1 IP. Rutgers is hitting .326 as a team and there is not a weak hitter in their lineup, as everyone but one player hits over .300, and the one that doesn't is at .289.

In the 1st, Whalen led off with an infield single and then reached 2nd on a WP. A walk to Glasser put two on with no outs, and Ellis then hit into a DP, something he has done a few times this season, leaving a runner on 3rd. Kollar then got a K to end IU's 1st.

In RU's 1st, Modugno, with an ERA of 9.59 in 25.1 IP, struck out the first batter, but then walked the next two batters to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. IU got the 2nd out on a force out at 3rd, with runners still on 1st and 2nd. A flyout ends RU's 1st as both teams failed to take advantage of scoring situations in the 1st.

In the 2nd, IU goes down in order with two outs on Ks.

In RU's 2nd, for the second straight inning, Modugno gets a K on the leadoff batter and then walks the next batter. Rutgers then gets their first hit of the game, a single through the infield to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. IU then gets out of the inning on a flyout and a K.

In the 3rd, Doanes struck out and Serruto grounded out. Whalen then walks and Glasser hits at single and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error with Whalen reaching 3rd, another throwing error by the SS scored Whalen from 3rd as IU takes the lead 1-0 on an unearned run. Ellis ended IU's 3rd with a line out.

In RU's 3rd, Modugno hit the first batter and then pops up the next two men for two outs with one on at 1st. A flyout ended the inning. You have to give Modugno credit for three pretty good innings as he has had runners on, but has left them on the bases.

In IU's 4th, Pyne leads off with a single and he has reached base in 22 straight games now. Jessee then lined out to the SS who then caught Pyne off 1st for Rutgers 2nd DP of the game. A called strike three on Mathison ends IU's 4th.

In RU's 4th, Modugno got a pop out for the 1st out. A flyout resulted in the 2nd out. After a single, Modugno got the last out on a K to end the inning. This is Modugno best stretch of the season and it's not even close.

IU goes down in order in the 5th, all on flyouts.

In RU's 5th, Mercer goes to the bullpen and brings in Ty Bothwell to replace a pretty good Modugno today. Bothwell got the first two batters on ground outs. Rutgers best hitter and their power hitter in Nick Cimillo hit a homer that was right over the foul pole and ruled fair to tie the game. A pop out ended the inning.

Added note: Like with many teams, Rutgers has rejuvenated their program with transfers and their No. 1 pitcher going today in Kollar and their top hitter in Cimillo who just hit the homer are both transfers in.

In the T6, Whalen grounded out and Glasser then hit a double. Ellis then flied out, and Pyne lined out to the 3b in a diving catch to save a run for Rutgers.

In Rutgers 6th, Bothwell walked the leadoff hitter. Bothwell induces a DP ball for two outs. Bothwell then hit a batter, IU's 2nd of the game, to put a man on with two outs. A flyout ends the inning.

Jessee leads off the 7th with a single. Mathison then walks on four pitches to put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, and that chases the Rutgers starter. Rutgers brings in RHP Sam Bello with an ERA of 2.28 in 23.2 IP and he's a transfer from Maryland. Tibbetts flies out to RF which moves Jessee to 3rd with Mathison still at 1st and one out. A deep SAC fly to center by Doanes scores Jessee from 3rd to give IU the lead at 2-1 with two outs and a runner on 1st. Mathison steals 2nd with two outs. Serruto, a Rutgers transfer to IU, strikes out to end the 7th for IU.

In RU's 7th, Rutgers got a one-out, solo homer to tie the game again at 2-2. Bothwell's two hits given up so far have been solo homers. Rutgers then puts a man on with a single and two outs, but a flyout ends the inning.

Whalen leads off the 8th with a single. Glasser then doubles to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Ellis is intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Whalen was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Pyne to leave the bases loaded and one out. Jessee then singled to the outfield to bring in Glasser, but Vecrumba who was pinch running for Ellis was thrown out at the plate on a good throw from the outfield. IU is up 3-2 with runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs. Mathison just missed on a homer when it went just left of the foul pole. Mathison then walks to load the bases again with two outs. A flyout by Tibbets ends IU's 8th and Rutgers is fortunate to give up only one run in that inning.

In RU's 8th, Mercer goes to the bullpen to bring in LHP Grant Holderfield with an ERA of 4.82 in 28 IP. Holderfield hit the leadoff batter, IU's third hit batter of the game with two of them to leadoff batters. A fly ball was dropped by Whalen in CF for an error to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. A mental error on Tibbetts allowed a bunt to go for a single as Tibbetts didn't see that Doanes had gone to cover first and he didn't know where to go with the bunt. With the bases loaded, a flyout scored an unearned run to tie the game again at 3-3. Holderfield then walked the next batter to load the bases again with one out. Holderfield then got a big out on a K for the 2nd out with bases loaded. A fly to LF fell for a single to score two more unearned runs as Rutgers takes a lead of 5-3. Holderfield got a foul tip for a K to end what was forgettable 8th in which IU gave up the lead on a hit batter, an error, and a mental error that led to 3 runs.

IU goes meekly down in the 9th to lose a game on an 8th in which three mistakes cost them dearly and probably the game, although we won't ever know what Rutgers might have done in the 9th.

Rutgers gets their 13th straight win thanks to IU's early Christmas gifts in the 8th. IU outhit Rutgers 8 to 7. Glasser was 3 for 3 and and Whalen and Jessee has two hits apiece. Modugno pitched his best 4 innings of the season and didn't give up any runs. Bothwell gave up two solo homers in his 3 IP. All three pitchers used managed to hit a batter for three hit batters in the game, with the last one by Holderfield being critical in the 8th. Holderfield hit the leadoff man and Whalen then dropped a fly ball in CF for an error with no outs. On a bunt down the 1st base line, Tibbetts didn't seem to know that Doanes had covered 1st and didn't seem to know where to go with the ball and it went as a bunt hit loading the bases. That was all she wrote as IU lost a game that they were so close to winning, and the 8th was an inning the Keystone Cops would have appreciated.
