IU @ Purdue, Game 3: 9th inning rally gives IU the win and the series, 5-4...

It's a huge game for both teams and RHP Ty Rybarczyk will be on the mound for IU with an ERA of 6.86 in 19.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.63 with an OBA of .301. The batting order is the same as yesterday.

Purdue will have Kyle Iwinski on the mound with an ERA of 7.26 in 31.0 IP and a WHIP of 1.55 with an OBA of .304.

It's 64 and partly sunny with the wind out of the SSE at 4 mph.

1st inning:

T1st:

Taylor singled to start the game. Pyne flied out on a diving catch by the outfielder with Taylor still at 1st.

Mitchell reached on a FC with Taylor out at 2nd and two outs.

Cerny singled to put runners on the corners with two outs and Brenczewski up.

Brenczewski hit a hard liner to RF but it was right to the outfielder to retire the side.

B1st:

The leadoff hitter got a double that went to the wall in right center. An infield single put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

A flyout put runners on the corners with one out. A single put the Boilers on the board and runners still on the corners with one out. All hits so far have been hard hit.

Rybarczyk got a big K for the 2nd out and runners still on the corners.

A groundout ended the inning and Rybarczyk limited the damage to one run.

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Tibbitts leading off. IU hit the Purdue pitcher well in the 1st but came up empty. Tibbitts lined out to CF for the first out.

Mathison Kd swinging on a full count for the 2nd out. Stadler hit a routine flyout to retire the side.

B2nd:

Rybarczyk faced the bottom of the order. This inning started the same as the 1st inning with a leadoff double.
Purdue had no extra base hits yesterday and they have a couple of doubles already.

A flyout to CF moved the runner to 3rd and one out and IU had seen enough and went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Aidan Decker-Petty with an ERA of 6.04 in 22.1 IP with a WHIP of 1.52.

A suicide squeeze bunt scored the runner from 3rd with the batter reaching 1st and one out. D-P faced the top of the order and got a K for the 2nd out and a runner still at 1st.

A groundout end the inning.

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up with Oliver leading off. Cerny popped up to shallow center and we are at the top of the order with Taylor up.

Taylor flied out to the warning track for the 2nd out. Pyne doubled off the wall in left center.

Mitchell lined out to LF to retire the side.

B3rd:

D-P faced the 3 thru 5 hitters. D-P Kd the leadoff hitter and then got the next batter on a groundout for two outs. D-P got another K and put them down in order to end the inning.

It's the middle of the order up with Cerny leading off. Cerny and Brenczewski both Kd to start the inning. Tibbitts grounded out in a quick inning for a Purdue pitcher who had elevated numbers coming into the game. IU has hit the ball hard at times only to not find the holes in the infield or hitting flies/line drives right to the outfielders.

B4th:

D-P faced the 6 thru 8 hitters. D-P got the leadoff hitter on a pop foul to Tibbitts for the first out. D-P then walked a batter on a full count. A flyout to RF got the 2nd out with the runner still at 1st. A

A WP put the runner at 2nd. A K ended the inning.

If IU was going to get anything going in this inning, it's going to have to come from the bottom of the order with Mathison leading off.

Mathison lined out straight to the center fielder for the first out. Stadler got robbed of a hit on a hard hit liner with the outfielder making a diving catch and it was the second time in the game this has happened.

A groundout retired the side and a Purdue pitcher with elevated numbers coming in, has shut IU down on just three hits with two of them coming in the 1st inning.

B5th:

D-P faced the top of the order. D-P Kd the first two batters. A groundout ended the inning and they went down in order.

It's the top of the order up with Taylor leading off. A routine flyout got Taylor for the first out. Pyne walked on four pitches and it was the first BB by the Purdue starter.

On a hit and run, Mitchell missed the pitch and Pyne was thrown out at 2nd. Mitchell then singled to put a runner on with two outs.

On another hard liner to the outfield, Cerny was robbed of a hit that probably would have scored a run, but a diving catch was made by the Purdue fielder to retire the side. It was the third time in the game that a diving catch was made of an IU liner to the outfield.

B6th:

D-P faced the middle of the order. D-P walked the leadoff hitter on a full count.

A passed ball moved the runner to 2nd.

D-P then hit a batter in the head to put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs. Glant made a long visit to the mound. D-P then went 3-0 on the next batter who was trying to bunt and he walked the hitter on four pitches.

The bases were loaded with no outs and D-P hit the next batter to bring in a run and Mercer finally went to the bullpen. D-P pitched well before he ran out of gas and with hindsight being 20/20, they probably kept him in there a little too long.

IU brought in RHP Jacob Vogel with an ERA of 0.66 in 13.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.10. Vogel got a big K for the first out with the bases still loaded.

A SAC fly scored another Purdue run to make it 4-0 and two outs with runners on 1st and 2nd.

A flyout ended the inning and IU was pretty fortunate to only give up two runs in the inning with the K by Vogel to start out with, being really big.

It was the 5 thru 7 hitter up for IU with Brenczewski leading off and Purdue going to the bullpen to bring in RHP Avery Cook with an ERA of 3.45 in 28.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.26.

Brenczewski walked on a 3-1 count to leadoff. Tibbitts lined out on another diving/sliding catch and the ball came out of the glove and it was ruled an out with the ball coming loose on the transfer. IU challenged the call and the umps overturned the call and gave Tibbitts a hit to put runners on 1st and 2nd.

Mathison reached on a FC with Tibbitts out at 2nd and Brenczewski taking 3rd and runners on the corners.

Stadler was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out and Oliver up. Mercer decided to bring in Sefcik as a pinch hitter which would mean that Burckel would come in at 2nd, and he was the one that had that critical error on a DP ball in game one.

A groundout scored Brenczewski to make it 4-1 and two outs with runners at 1st and 2nd.

With the top of the order up Taylor hit a hard liner right into the shift they had for him and IU came away with just one run.

B7th:

Vogel faced the 2 thru 4 hitters and IU brought Carlson in at 2nd instead of Burckel. Vogel got the leadoff hitter on a pop out to LF.

Vogel then walked the next batter on a full count. Another pop up got the 2nd out. An infield single put runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs. A pop up to Cerny ended the inning.

Vogel faced the 8 thru 1 hitters. The leadoff hitter reached on a single through a big hole created by the shift. A SAC bunt moved the runner to 2nd and one out.

Vogel hit the next batter to put runners on 1st and 2nd and one out with the top of the order up.

A foul out to LF was snagged by Taylor for the 2nd out with the runners still at 1st and 2nd.

A flyout to RF ended the inning.

IU won a series in W. Lafayette for the first time since 2002 and they left their hosts with a foul taste in their mouth as IU snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in today's game.

This game was somewhat similar to yesterday's game where a Boiler starting pitcher with elevated numbers dominated IU hitters until late in the game. IU made better contact with the ball in this game but they had trouble finding the holes with the Purdue shifts in perfect position, and flies and line drives were right to a fielder with three line drives snared on tough diving efforts by fielders.

IU had no errors in the game with Purdue having one huge error that won the game for IU with the winning run scoring on an unearned run because of it.

IU outhit Purdue, 8-7, with IU having just one extra base hit while Purdue had two extra base hits. IU was 8 for 34 for a team average of .235 while Purdue was 7 for 32 for an average of .219. IU had just two multi-hits players.

Taylor - 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Tibbitts - 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Mitchell had a hit and an RBI, while Sefcik and Wiggins each had an RBI in a pinch hitting role.

Pyne had the lone extra base hit with a double.

IU got good to great pitching out the bullpen today after Rybarczyk got roughed up in 1.1 IP as the starter. Decker-Petty had his longest stint on the mound this season and pitched well up until he ran out of gas in the 6th inning. Vogel entered the game in the 6th and pitched outstanding the rest of the way in getting the win while putting them down in order in the 9th against the meat of the Purdue order. Vogel's ERA dropped to 0.51 in 17.2 IP, and he and Buhr have become key pitchers out the bullpen late in the season.

Rybarczyk - 1.1 IP, 4 hits with two doubles and 2 earned runs, 1 K, and no BBs.

Decker-Petty - 3.2 IP, 1 hit with 2 earned runs, 6 Ks, 3 BBs, 1 WP, and 2 hit batters.

Vogel (W) - 4.O IP, 2 hits and no earned runs, 1 K, 1 BB, and a hit batter.
