IU over South Florida 2-0

No. 16 Indiana Shuts Out No. 24 South Florida, 2-0
Goals from Hollinger-Janzen, Lillard lift Indiana to their second straight win

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Hoosiers conclude their Mike Bertecelli Memorial Tournament campaign with a 2-0 win over the No. 24 Bulls of the University of South Florida. A first half score from Femi Hollinger-Janzen, followed by a mid-second half strike from Grant Lillard, separated the sides in Indiana's third victory in four games.

"It was a great weekend," said Indiana coach Todd Yeagley on the Hoosiers' two wins. "We played two really dynamic teams, two very good offensive teams."

Yeagley said that the winning weekend came at the right time, and was rewarding for the excellent performances this season. "After a really good performance on Sunday [against Notre Dame], I thought it was important that we found a good win," Yeagley said. "To find two good wins against two surefire NCAA Tournament teams, it's going to take us a long way this year."

The Hoosiers were on the attack from the early minutes of the contest. Hollinger-Janzen excited the crowd 12 minutes into the first half, when Phil Fives left a ball at the top of the 18-yard box. Femi's strike drove low and fast towards the goal, and required a diving save from the keeper. The Bulls' keeper got the best of that play, but there was no stopping Hollinger-Janzen on the attack on Sunday afternoon.

In the 14th minute, Indiana's Billy McConnell delivered a low cross from the wing into the box. The ball arrived at Ben Maurey, who dummied the ball over to Hollinger-Janzen. The senior midfielder took the play and drove it into the back of the net.

"I could see it in his focus, the way he was moving in his warm-up—I had a really good feeling for Femi today," Yeagley said with confidence. "The Finish by Femi showed how dangerous he was all day, an absolute handful for South Florida."

From there, Indiana played lockdown defense. The defensive play was solid from front to back. After allowing a goal early into their match against UAB, the Hoosiers held their opponents scoreless for the final 175 minutes of their tournament play. "One thing that was clear this weekend was that our team defending is very good, both individually and collectively," Yeagley said.

Sophomore center back Grant Lillard anchored the defense, and he had one of Indiana's top performances of the tournament. "For the last few games, Grant's level of play has been outstanding," said Yeagley, regarding the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. "He's so big and athletic that he can make plays in different capacities."

Lillard, according to his head coach, is such a dual threat in the back for the Hoosiers. Towering at 6-4, he faced a pair of pacey, dynamic forwards alongside fellow center back Derek Creviston. The pair excelled at halting their attack runs, even jumping on some passes and matching their pace. It came as no surprise to the coaching staff when Lillard's smart, tenacious play earned him a goal in the 63rd minute.

"The goal was just the icing on the cake today for Grant," Yeagley said after Lillard cleaned up a persevering effort from Fives. "I thought he had an All-American performance."

With four games under their belt in the 2015 season, the Hoosiers are still seeking a traditional striker, one they can count on for a goal when they need it most. This weekend, however, Indiana showed that their many-pronged attack is capable of breaking down defenses, as it's unpredictable from where those chances will come. Hollinger-Janzen and Lillard became Indiana's fourth and fifth goal scorers, respectively, in 2015.

"I think this team is very balanced and built to handle any type of attack," said Yeagley. "As we find our rhythm offensively, it will develop into something that's pretty dynamic."

The Hoosiers are looking ahead to their first game of their Big Ten Conference schedule, which takes place next weekend at Penn State. Indiana is sure to face tough competition, but they're confident in their strengths. "Penn State is a fantastic team every year, and I think that will be a great match," Yeagley said. "I like where our team is at this point, we've taken some big steps moving forward, and we'll be preparing for an important Big Ten opener."
