IU Opens -6 vs.Virginia.

I'm always concerned when Vegas doesn't give the home team 10.5 or more.

Somebody out there thinks VA can beat us by a field goal or a couple more points...

Should be a good game...

Side note: VA has an old friend of our Defensive Line playing for them at RIght Tackle as a grad-transfer. A guy with the last name of Applegate (I think..., it's Applesomething...). One of the dirtiest players we ran across last fall (he then played for Rutgers).

He should help get the Defensive Line to focus a bit (I hope)...

Turns out the grad-transfer OT from Rutgers name is Applefield.

All I recall clearly was that he was a rather creative cheap shot artist when we played them in that rain storm last season...

From what I’ve read about Virginia, this game could come down to which team can control the line of scrimmage. Their lines on both sides of the ball are their main weaknesses.

Our offense should have more success so if our D can make some improvements we should be in a good position to win.

IU will win by more than they did last week.

Virginia has an awful secondary and in spite of some goobers' analysis that the Hoosiers are thin at receiver, IU will throw all over the field with the plethora of wide outs. Weather permitting

I hope you're right.

Must let you know however that the guy who originally said we were thin at WR (don't believe that's an exact quote but that covers what he meant) was none other than Tom Allen himself.

We always have to remember that the coaches expect our receivers to do more than just catch the ball. They're involved in blocking and sometimes just "influencing" every play. Some guys are ready to do the whole job and some evidently aren't...

Same thing with Running Backs: doesn't help you much if a guy rips off an 11 yard run and then turns around and gives up a 15 yard sack because he doesn't know his assignment in the pass protection...

Well I certainly don't think he's a goober. In fact I think he is going to be great at IU. As I've said before, Allen is a leader of men. I've heard from others, perhaps not here, that we are not deep at receiver. I think we are dynamic on the outside.

I believe skill position wise Indiana can stack up with many teams. It's when they can get the lineman, both offensively and defensively, that they'll reach the breakthrough.

Spriggs and Feeney were very good, just need it to all come together.

They're closer than most think, imo.

They'll get that signature win this year.

IU has a gap at receiver but we are talented with the ones on the field. We need the younger receivers to step up especially the freshman receivers to gain depth that is needed.

Its people like you that worry me. You blast a poster for a quote they didn't make then claim IU is now a powerhouse.

You really don't know much about IU FB do you? Lets see what kind of fan you are right after the first loss you say will should win. Will you still be so arrogant...I'll be watching...vbg

At least wait until IU actually beats someone with a good team...before you claim they are world beaters...lol

OK, I'll bite; against whom? MSU? Michigan? PSU?

Would a win against Iowa be a "signature" win? Minnesota?

Maryland?
Typical overexcited fan. My only issue is these type fans always turn on the staff and team when they don't meet their lofty expectations...

We are going to be lucky to get to 6 wins...lets see where this fan is at then...

JMHO the only signature wins I would consider "signature wins" would be against osu or psu. Michigan has been down but it wouldn't shock me if we beat them and michigan state is beatable as well. We have competed well against the michi's for awhile now but beating osu at their place or Trace McSorley would be MONSTER! Again jmho

Most important for me this week would be seeing our DL get pressure without a blitz. Also LB play. If the D-Line stays disciplined and controls gaps our LB's should be running downhill and making plays at or behind the L.O.S. Hopefully we will see a huge week 1 to week 2 improvement in that area.

On the offensive side I'm hoping for the same in the passing game but would like to see Majette get it going. He has shown signs in the past and has deceiving speed. Need to get a consistent guy back there that can handle the RB position!

This is one of the most bizarre posts I've ever read. Beating Michigan for the first time in 31 years and the second time in 50 years, in Ann Arbor, would not be a signature win, but beating PSU at home for the second time in six years would be? GTFOH! I really hope you're not being serious.

Calm down...I didn't realize we had Michi in Ann Arbor. Sure it would be a big monkey off the back beating michigan but would not "shock" me. I know we just beat psu recently but that was a team in turmoil.

Sorry if I'm living in the now but this year the two that would be BIG would be psu and osu. Also sorry if that sounds to "bizarre" for your taste.

Monday would be a bank holiday if they beat Michigan. Every Monday.

Re: the LBs, it dawned on me that we might have seen more of our 2nd team LBs than our first team against FIU. Allen and Roof played a lot, and getting them reps against decent competition is a good thing.

Plus we get Burnam back this week. Not sure where he is in the rotation, but having 5 is better than 4, especially if Burnam is a top 3 guy . . . which of course I don't know anything about.

Well, we always talk about "signature" wins, but I'm not sure that I know what we mean by that. So I asked.

BTW, IMHO nicking any of OSU, PSU, Michigan and/or MSU would be a "signature" win for that season. Maybe Iowa if they're having a really good year, but not so much if they're having a typical to mediocre season; I kinda think of them as relatively on par with MSU.

Winning two of the six games I mentioned in my post above would indicate a pretty good year for IU. Winning north of two of those games . . . well, I'd guess we'd be signing CTA to an extension . . . and if we were to win four of those six, it'd likely be a lonnnng-term extension.

This. A win against any of these teams under any circumstances would be reason to rejoice. Wins against the balance of the B1G (minus Wisky) should be satisfying without being considered phenomenal.

Not sure we're in a position to knock off any of the big boys yet but we are, I believe, well-positioned to win six this year.

The biggest game of the season is the next game. Beat Virginia!

Good question. I think Iowa would be nice in the sense that I think IU will be 3-0 to start, have a shot at MSU, and beat Maryland, Purdue, and Rutgers. A win against either Minnesota or Iowa would make 7.

7 wins would build this thing with recruiting.

Superstar84b mentioned he could see a path toward 10 wins. I don't think he was predicting that, but this team is different. Young, but different. I saw the speed. I saw the talent. FIU has been underrated here.

Their winning 7 games this year,

I love Tom Allen, not like, love. Crean was a disaster. Archie is the real deal. I have coached a High School Varsity sport in Indiana for 20 years. I know good coaching when I see it.

I see a different mindset with this IU football team. I'm proud to have Tom Allen leading my schools football program.

The Virginia game will tell us quite a bit more about our team. However, I'm not so sure Virginia is any better than FIU, especially along the lines. I think FIU could take Virginia?

It might be a little early to tell. Week 2 provides a good jump for many teams once coaches get a chance to correct what they saw in the first game.

I'd guess Mendenhall is a good coach, but I'm not sure how well he recruits. And I'd guess CKW left CTA more players than Mendenhall got from his predecessor.

I guess we'll just have to play the game and see. :)

FIU was very average skill-wise, and their defense wasn’t very good in the back 7. They’ll be the 11th best team Iu plays this season.

Agree with the first sentence, strongly disagree with the second. Virginia has better athletes and talent than FIU. We'll have our hands full with their QB. Yep, their defensive line is a bit suspect, but they've still got some players on D. They made big strides last season (six wins and a bowl game) when no one expected them to do anything. And Bronco Mendenhall is a really good coach.

They're actually a notch above us in this week's Sagarin ratings. This game will be tougher than FIU, and is no gimme. But it's one we've got to win.
