The Hoosiers have drawn seven times, posted 10 clean sheets and gone 4-1-2 against teams in the RPI top 25.

Now they find themselves in a position to make a run in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 overall seed.

IU now will get ready to face the Akron Zips on Sunday in Bloomington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. IU Coach Todd Yeagley said he doesn’t know a whole lot about his opposition.

“Akron, we’ve played them in the past,” Yeagley said. “They play a possession-oriented style, they get numbers forward, and they build through the different phases through the game.”

Akron earned a 2-0 win against Villanova on Thursday to punch its ticket to the second round.

The last time the Hoosiers played the Zips was in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013 in Akron, Ohio. The Zips came away with a 3-2 win. The only current player to have played in that game was IU goalkeeper
Colin Webb. Both teams came into the season with high expectations.

The Zips started the season in the top 10 but have since fallen out of the rankings altogether. If there is anything to relate the two sides, it is that IU senior Phil Fives spent two seasons in Akron playing for the Zips.

“I’m super excited,” Fives said on the chance to play his former team. “They’re a great program — a lot of good talent there. We were actually talking before the selection that it might end up like this. This is a great opportunity to show the nation what we got and
step up.”

A season ago in the NCAA Tournament, the Hoosiers were the No. 16 overall seed. They were able to beat Connecticut in the second round at home but suffered a loss at Wake Forest in the third round.

Both of those matches were 1-0 score lines. There have not been many goals scored this year, either, and the Hoosiers are used to being in many low-scoring games with their stout defense.

For the most part, the Hoosiers should avoid opponents they have already played throughout the season. Maryland, Notre Dame, Stanford and Louisville are all on the other side of the bracket.

No. 15-seed Butler could see the Hoosiers later on in the tournament but Butler would have to upset No. 2-seed Wake Forest first. Yeagley said it’s a good thing to be able to match up against potential new opponents.

“We know that it’s a one-game tournament,” Yeagley said. “You look at the other part of the bracket and see where we could have been. We’re confident against those teams, but it is a different challenge. Having played those games in my years, it’s hard to play a team a second or third time. It’s just hard, so it’s a good thing.”

Very even match today; Indiana gets a 1-0 win.

I thought the goal was actually put in by an Akron defender.

Good win by the Hoosiers today; tough first opponent and good to pay them back for 2013.

That was 100% an own goal; but college stat keepers are always overly friendly for the home team. Doesn't make any difference and bring on VT.

No. 4 Indiana Takes Down Akron, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the No. 23-ranked Akron Zips, 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 12-1-7 on the season overall, while Akron's season comes to an end with a mark of 13-6-3.

Senior Billy McConnell scored the match winner for IU in the 54th minute off an assist from Tanner Thompson. In goal, Indiana goalkeeper Christian Lomeli made three saves in registering his fourth shutout of the season.

With the victory, the Hoosiers have now reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the 36th time in program history and for the fifth time under head coach Todd Yeagley.

IU is now 85-30-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, posting a winning percentage of .731. The 85 victories and tournament winning percentage rank first in NCAA history. With the victory, Indiana remains unbeaten at Armstrong Stadium with a record of 8-0-3 mark on the season.

In the first half, shots were even at 7-7, but the Hoosiers had the better of the scoring opportunities. Austin Panchot played very well and had a pair of chances at goal, while Andrew Gutman had a screamer of an attempt go just wide in the first 45 minutes.

After a scoreless first half, IU found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. On a corner kick, Thompson sent a great ball in to the 18-yard box, finding the head of McConnell. The senior's effort deflected off an Akron defender, leaving the Zips' goalie no chance at stopping the score. McConnell notched his third goal of the season, with Thompson recording his third assist of the year.

Akron went on the attack after falling behind, but the IU defense remained stout, not allowing the Zips to find the equalizer.

The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers will host Virginia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 1:00 p.m. ET at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

IU soccer advances in NCAA tourney, 1-0
by Jeremy Price

Seventh-seeded Indiana found the back of the net in the 54th minute and made that goal stand up for a 1-0 victory over visiting Akron Sunday afternoon in a second-round NCAA Tournament game at Armstrong Stadium.

The game-winner was credited to Billy McConnell, who flicked Tanner Thompson’s corner kick into the path of onrushing Akron defender Brad Ruhaak. The ball caromed off Ruhaak’s shoulder and into the net, setting off a Hoosier celebration.

“Tanner just played a great ball in, I got a flick on it, deflected in,” McConnell said. “I didn’t really see it until it actually went in, but I got a head on it and the defenders, they weren’t able to react in time.”

The Hoosiers (12-1-7) indeed created their fair share of danger, but again struggled to find the finish until they created their own luck.

Indiana finished with a 13-12 advantage in shots, 4-3 in shots on goal.

Meanwhile, the IU defense made sure the offense had plenty of time to do its work, limiting a potent Akron (13-6-3) offensive attack that was shut out for just the third time all season and first since Sept. 27.

The Hoosiers advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year despite playing without midfielder Trevor Swartz, who sat out after taking a knee to the face in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Wisconsin that required stitches.

Indiana, which is now 8-0-3 at home this season, will host Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. next Sunday. The Hokies upset 10th-seeded Charlotte, 3-2, Sunday.

Hoosier men's soccer advances to third round of NCAA tournament
by Josh Eastern

The stakes were high in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The temperatures, however, not so much.

The last time the Hoosiers matched up with the Akron Zips, the Zips sent IU home in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. This time around the Hoosiers weren’t going to let that happen.

It was a cold and blustery day with temperatures in the 30s. The pitch had seen better days with players slipping and sliding on the worn down Bermuda. In the end, IU got what they needed. A win.

Behind senior defender Billy McConnell’s goal in the 54th minute, the No. 7 seeded Hoosiers moved onto the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over the Zips.

“We created some phenomenal chances, and I felt we should have had a few more.” IU Coach Todd Yeagley said. “Ironically we find one again on a restart, which again this time of the year through as many teams that I’ve been with can be the difference is being sharp in those moments both offensively and defensively.

It was close throughout with both teams sharing plenty of time on the ball. The Zips were more dangerous on the counter while the Hoosiers had plenty of chances throughout the match. IU’s goal eventually came off of a corner sent in by senior midfielder Tanner Thompson.

Thompson has been pulling the strings in the midfield all season long, and Sunday was no different. His technical skill showed when the Hoosiers needed it most. Thompson’s cross off a corner kick was batted around the box and appeared as if an Akron defender knocked it in. The goal was eventually awarded to McConnell, his third of the season.

“Tanner just played a great ball in. I got a flick on it. It deflected in,” McConnell said. “I didn’t really see it until it actually went in, but I got a head on it and made the defender wasn’t able to react in time.”

IU has prided itself on defense all season long. From McConnell on the right all the way across the back to IU sophomore left back Andrew Gutman. This backline is stout and Sunday was no different. Junior defender Grant Lillard was key and so was sophomore defender Timmy Mehl. Not to mention, senior goalkeeper Christian Lomeli who had three saves on the day.

“Here at Indiana, we really take pride in our defense. That’s kind of our calling card,” sophomore midfielder Francesco Moore said. “We just couldn’t give them time on the ball to make any decisions and let them pick us apart. The least amount of time we gave them, the better for us. And it was able to hold them off.”

Akron had plenty of chances throughout the match sending 12 shots on goal while IU edged them out in that department by one. The corner count was also even at eight.

There wasn’t much to separate these two teams. Akron was countering, IU was holding strong. The Zips played a physical game that resulted in 16 fouls compared to just eight for the Hoosiers. It wasn’t meant to be on this day for the Zips, however.

The Hoosiers will stay at home for another match next Sunday against either No. 10 seed Charlotte or Virginia Tech. As is tradition, the Hoosiers will most likely spend another Thanksgiving in the Tudor Room at the Indiana Memorial Union.

“We’re going to take one game at a time and we’re going to keep going,” McConnell said. “We’re going to go to the final four. We’re going to get there, go to Houston, get a ring. We want to stay together as long as possible.”
