IU is a huge beneficiary of the federal largesse coming from Crane.
My Biology prof told a story in 1977 of how the Biology Dept created a bacteria strain that would eat TNT for Crane. Found a stain known to eat toluene in some Crane field trip samples … put them in a fermenter and added a TNT drip.
The strain adapted to TNT quickly. Crane accepted the data but declined to use it to dispose of old TNT. (Blowing it up apparently has its own purposes — assessing the strength of Naval armor plate to name one).
