It's Ethan Phillips on the mound for IU with Tibbitts behind the plate. Cal Sefcik is the DH today.

T1st:

IU is the visiting team. Mathison reached on an error on a pop up that was dropped. Pyne singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.

Taylor singled to score Mathison with runners on the corners and no outs.

Tibbitts Kd swinging. Cerny popped out for the 2nd out. Shepard walked to load the bases with two outs.

Colopy walked to bring in another run with the bases still loaded and two outs. Sefcik reached on a FC with Colopy out at 2nd to retire the side.

B1st:

Phillips got the first two batters on K and GO and then hit a batter to put a runner on. A lineout ended the inning.

Taylor singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Tibbitts Kd for the 2nd time today to retire the side.

It's the 5 thru 7 hitters up for IU with Cerny leading off. Cerny singled to put a man on.

Shepard homered to right center to score two runs and no outs.

Colopy homered to right field to make it 5-0 and no outs.

Sefcik and Burckel both grounded out for two outs and no one out. Mathison Kd to retire the side.

B3rd:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up for GMU. The leadoff hitter fouled out to RF.

Phillips got the 2nd out on a GO. A batter reached on an error by Cerny as he bobbled the ball and the throw was late to 1st. A GO ended the inning.

4th inning:

T4th:

It's the 2 thru 4 hitters up for IU and GMU went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Kyle Menaker.

Pyne Kd to leadoff and IU already has five Ks on the day and they are averaging 12.5 Ks though the first two games.

Taylor out and Tibbitts flied out to retire the side.

B4th:

Phillips was back out there to face the 3 thru 5 hitters.

The leadoff hitter reached on a hit batter. The batter, Jordan Smith, is an expert at getting hit and tied for the lead in the nation last season in getting hit by pitches and he has reached twice today by getting hit.

Smith was caught stealing for the first out on a throw out by Tibbitts. Phillips then hit another batter to put a man on and one out.

Phillips then walked a batter to put two on and one out, and that brought a mound visit by Glant.

Phillips gave up his first hit of the game on an RBI single to make it 5-1 and runners on 1st and 2nd and one out.

Another single scored the runner from 2nd and was 5-2 IU, and Phillips seemed to be out of gas.

With runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Phillips gets a K for the 2nd out.

Phillips walked a batter to load the bases with two outs and Mercer went to the bullpen to bring in RHP Seti Manase. I guess that answered my question about Manase.

Manase faced the top of the order with the bases loaded and two outs. Manase got a GO to end the inning.

End of 4th: IU 5 GMU 2

Got a little lucky there. Waited too long to pull an obviously struggling Phillips. Nice to see Manase get the job done.

5th inning:

T5th:

Cerny popped out, Shepard Kd, and Colopy singled to put a man on and two outs. Sefcik flied out to retire the side.

B5th:

Manase was back out there to face the 2 thru 4 hitters.

Manase put them down in order with the last out a K.

End of 5th: IU 5 GMU 2

T6th:

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters for IU and IU has been quiet from the plate of late.

IU went down in order and Mathison Kd for the 2nd time today. The GMU pitcher Menaker has retired 9 of 10 batters so far.

B6th:

Manase faced the 5 thru 7 hitters. He got the first two batters on GOs, but then gave up a two-out double.

All three hits by GMU have come from the 6 thru 8 hitters so far.

An infield single with Shepard being hurt on the play at first scored a run to make it 5-3. Shepard was replaced by Joey Brenczewski at 1st.

A K ended the inning.

End of 6th: IU 5 GMU 3

7th inning:

T7th:

IU has been dominated by the current pitcher, Menaker, so far. It's the 3 thru 5 hitters up.

Taylor and Tibbitts both walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

After dominating IU, Menaker seemed to run out of gas and GMU went to the bullpen. They brought in RHP Logan Rumberg.

Cerny reached on a FC with runners still at 1st and 2nd with one out.

Brenczewski Kd for the 2nd out. Colopy grounded out to retire the side and IU has done nothing at the plate since the 3rd inning.

B7th:

It's the top of the order up and IU went to the bullpen to bring in Boston College transfer RHP Julian Tonghini.

It was a good start to Tonghini's Hoosier career as he put them down in order to include a K.

End of 7th: IU 5 GMU 3

8th inning:

T8th:

It's the 8th thru 1 hitters up.

Andrew Wiggins pinch hitted for Sefcik and hit a double to start things off.

Burckel was hit by a pitch to put two on and no outs.

Mathison hit a 3-run homer to left center to give IU an 8-3 lead as IU had woken up at the plate.

Pyne singled to put a man on and still no outs and that chased the GMU pitcher. They brought in LHP Luke Goodyear to face Taylor and he Kd for the first out while Pyne stole 2nd.

The Patriots went to the bullpen again to bring in RHP Ryan Edmonds as the Patriots were going lefty vs lefty with Taylor and now righty vs righty with Tibbitts up.

Tibbitts Kd and Cerny lined out to retire the side.

B8th:

It's the 4 thru 6 hitters up for GMU with Tonghini still on the mound and he gave up a leadoff single.

Tonghini then got a pop up and a FC at 2nd for two outs and a runner at 1st. A K ended the inning.

End of 8th: IU 8 GMU 3

9th inning:

T9th:

Brenczewski led off and got his first hit as a Hoosier. Colopy Kd for the first out.

Wiggins walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.

Burckel reached on a throwing error which scored Brenczewski which was unearned and it put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out with GMU going to the bullpen again.

Mathison Kd for two outs and runners still at 2nd and 3rd. With Pyne up, GMA went to the bullpen again and brought in RHP Britt Yount.

Pyne flied out to retire the side.

B9th:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up for GMU and Tonghini is back out there to close it out and he put them down in order to end the game.

Final: IU 9 GMU 3

No. I got the description of it on the radio coverage.
Well, you do a helluva job. Thank you.

He got hit hard and awkwardly. Went straight down and stayed down. Was holding his left wrist the whole time. Walked off and straight back to the locker room.

Hopefully, he doesn't have a broken wrist. He certainly has had nothing but bad luck with the injuries in his early going at IU.

It was a good weekend for IU going against two ranked teams and with the other team coming off a regional last season. IU outhit the Patriots 12 to 4 which was good. We also used just nine pitchers in the tournament which is also a great sign going forward. We continued to strikeout a lot and had another 12 Ks in this game, and we came out of the tournament averaging 12.3 Ks a game. We had just one error today which is an improvement over the first two games, and we had five errors over the course of the tournament. We still are short on key players with Shepard going out today and having Mitchell miss the series and maybe another five games based on their prediction of when he can return.

Tibbitts is off to a slow start at the plate and he had three Ks today and is hitting .182 coming out of the tournament. He's too good of a hitter for that to last long.

Three players had multiple hits:

Pyne - 3 for 6 and he scored a run.
Colopy - 2 for 4 and 2 RBIs with a homer.
Taylor - 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Shepard - 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs with a homer.
Mathison - 1 for 6 with a 3-run homer (Mathison Kd three times but he made up for it with the 3-run homer to pretty much put the game out of reach for GMU.)

Pitching was great again with IU using three pitchers today. Phillips was great until he ran out of gas in the 4th. Manase and Tonghini pitched well out of the bullpen and especially Boston College transfer Julian Tonghini who pitched three scoreless innings to close the game out.

Phillips - 3.2 IP, 2 hits with 2 earned runs, 5 Ks, 2 BBs, and 3 hit batters.

Manase - 2.1 IP, 1 hit and no earned runs, 2Ks, and no BBs.

Tonghini - 3.0 IP, 1 hit and no earned runs, 2 Ks, and no BBs.

IU was among D1Baseball's statement makers after Saturday's games were over.

— Indiana's pitching staff made a bold statement in a 7-2 win over a hard-hitting Coastal Carolina club. After dropping their season opener on Friday, righthanded pitcher Connor Foley set the tone in the win over the Chanticleers. Foley, who was up to 96-97 mph with his fastball, struck out seven, walked two and allowed two hits in four shutout innings. Ty Bothwell was impressive out of the pen with just four hits allowed in five innings. It’s not easy to shut down Coastal’s potent lineup like that.

To put the Baseball at the Beach tournament to bed, here is one last item that I saw on IU from an analyst on the tournament.

• I wrote Sunday about Indiana’s Connor Foley and Ty Bothwell, two key arms for this pitching staff. On Friday, emerging sophomore Brayden Risedorph looked the part of the ace Indiana hoped he would become, working four mostly clean shutout innings. He pounded the zone at 89-92 with a good 79-82 slider, and he showed starter command. Lefty Ryan Kraft plus righties Ayden Decker-Petty and Evan Whiteaker all showed good feel to spin their sliders in relief, and all of them reached at least 90 mph with their fastballs. Those are nice bullpen pieces, and so are righties Seti Menase and Julian Tonghini, who combined to work the final six innings Sunday. Tonghini was especially good, standing out for his superb feel to spin his slider and curveball. Likewise, Sunday starter Ethan Phillips impressed with his tight 80-83 slider and his command of his 88-90 heater. On the whole, I saw the components of a regional-caliber pitching staff that should be able to back up this fearsome Indiana offense.

• And that Indiana offense will only get better when outfielder Nick Mitchell (a key portal acquisition who really impressed us in the Cape Cod League last summer) returns from injury in the near future. But the Hoosiers are absolutely stacked in the outfield, where veterans Carter Mathison and Devin Taylor are established stars, and senior Morgan Colopy looks like a senior breakout candidate. But blue-chip freshman Andrew Wiggins is going to force his way into regular playing time, because he’s too physical and athletic to be denied, and his approach looks advanced beyond his years. I also really liked what I saw from redshirt freshman Joey Brenczewski, another athletic and physical lefthanded hitter with a lot of upside. The future looks as bright as the present for Indiana, which has now broken into the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings.
