"IU’s performance from deep needs to improve"

Gotta love this quote:

"Of course there were detriments to that style of play, but it also worked out pretty well at times, considering that Crean won two Big Ten titles in four years. "

(Considering Crean also won 2 Big Ten titles in 9 years and never got past the sweet 16, even when he had 2 top 5 NBA draft picks on the roster)

But Crean never focused on defense and accepted a high number of turnovers to push the pace of the game in an effort to get open court shots. Which is why Turnover Tom will struggle to ever be consistently successful at a high level.

I prefer to zero in on this quote:

"In the final three seasons under Crean the Hoosiers finished first, second and second respectively in the Big Ten in three-point percentage. In the last two seasons they’ve finished 13th and 12th out of the 14 teams, respectively. That’s the difference between hitting shots at roughly a 40 percent clip and at a 30 percent clip.

"There could be several explanations for this, and each of those several explanations probably has something to do with the decrease in three-point shooting production."

The analysis that follows is pretty interesting.

Why are people so obsessed with saying Archie is better than Crean on here? Is it because they know it’s false but it makes them feel better? Why are some people so mentally weak?

Hopefully he is better, we will know soon. Beyond that Crean isn't coming back...get past it.

Why are you so mentally weak? You whine like a toddler. Why is that? Does it make you feel better? Or maybe you are just an anti-IU troll. I think troll.

It makes me feel better that Crean is gone and Archie is the coach irregardless of whether Archie bombs or not.

I don't know which troll you're responding too but I know he's a troll because I have them all on ignore. The place is much better without the troll droppings.

You're the last person who should be calling anyone mentally weak given your posting history.

@Paterfamilias I was wrong .. Virginia was much higher in 3's last year. I read the wrong column. lol

Off the top of my head, I can't think of what you might be referencing. Bennett's teams are very selective about the 3's that they take. I'm pretty sure they typically are pretty low in 3pt attempt rate. Last year they let it fly at a much higher rate than usual and that still just put them about midpack nationally.

I read the defensive column and stated the wrong stat in an earlier post. Didn't have time to edit so I deleted .. lol. Sorry.

Yea ... it seems Miller follows the philosophy - like Bennett and other defensive minded coaches - not to allow threes above the FT line in transition. It's the easiest shot to get in basketball so that alone will limit a teams 3 attempts. Unless we have a team that can shoot a lot of threes in half court we're not going to see IU under Miller be a national leader in that category. He'll also play inside out in half court generally with an actual focus on getting bigs in the lane, so that also limits the amount of threes taken.

He's literally the opposite of Crean.

To play the style of basketball Miller wants to play, we have to control the defensive boards, generate more points off of TO's and get out into transition more including secondary break opportunities..

I like Archie's philosophy much better than Crean's. Crean accepted high turnovers and did not focus on the defensive end. Exactly the opposite of what I consider good basketball. Good shot selection, low to no turnovers, limit the number of possessions in a game, and play hard nosed D.
