... October, 20, 1989..... I decided to check out some high school running back from Sheridan, Indiana named Brett Law..... He'd been receiving a ton of national media attention after setting the national record the season before by scoring 66 TDs.... He was becoming somewhat of a legend in the state and I had to see him in action with my own eyes.

I think he was already committed to go to IU and I was curious how good this kid could really be, being from a tiny 1A school... It was an easy trip for me since I live in north Noblesville no more than a 20 minute drive from home....

It was a typical late October night... cold in the mid-30s and some wind so it felt even colder than what the thermometer said.... Probably the first really cold night of the season. Not ideal weather conditions for sitting outside in the weather but I had to see this Law kid with my own eyes.

The season before Sheridan won the Class 1A Title cleaning the board with a 14-0 record... they were THE small school powerhouse in Indiana.... They were playing one of the "Clinton" schools, Clinton Prairie, ... Clinton Praire went in to the game with a 1-7 record so I sure wasn't expecting tough competition and I expected to see Law break loose for at least a handful of TDs!

I don't remember why but I arrived late. There was only about 3 minutes left in the first half and Sheridan had already run up the score to 41-0.... So, I watched the final few minutes of the first half and during the one series that Sheridan had the ball they would split Law out to the sideline and basically he'd just stand there. So far, I was bummed.

The second half begins and Sheridan has the ball.... Law is lined up in the backfield so I'm thinking, "Now I'm going to see what I came for!".... He didn't disappoint!

The very first play of the second half he starts to sweep around the left side and gets all the way to the sideline where CP has him hemmed in.... immediately he turns back to the right and starts heading toward the far sideline.... Law outruns everyone to the far corner turns it and goes about 70 yard to score.... I thought, "Not bad, lets see what he can do next."

Well, I never got to see what he would do next .... Sheridan's legendary coach, Bud Wright, decided to pull him and he never played another play the rest of the game!..... With the score at 62-7, I decided I might as well finish my hot chocolate and go back to the car and warm my frozen ass back up.....

It didn't matter to me that I only saw Brett Law handle the ball for ONE single play. The fact that what he did on that one play was enough to convince me that the kid was special and deserved all of the accolades he was receiving... after all it's not his fault he wasn't playing the top competition.. What he was able to do against what was presented to him was still impressive.

So, I got in the car, drove my 20 minutes east to home and had a cold refreshing beer. BTW, the hot chocolate tasted more like brown hot water...

I’m always impressed at small school studs that go to college and hang around. It’s so hard for any major athlete to go be a small fish in a big pond, that much more when they’re a huge fish in a puddle back home.

Great post.

I'm pretty sure I was at a game Sheridan game that Brett Law played in. I would have been in elementary school so I probably spent most of the game playing smear the...uh, kill the guy with the ball with my friends. I do remember watching Alex Smith play and wondering why Law didn't get to play more. Law did lead the team in rushing yards in 1992 (541). He had a career high of 240 yards against Missouri that year and 140 yards against Iowa in 1993. Those were his only two career 100-yard games. He finished his career with 258 caries for 1,134 yards (4.4 ypc) and 9 touchdowns. He was also Academic All-Big Ten in 92, 93 & 94.

I think he won the starting gig early in ‘92 for the first few games, had the big game vs Mizzou and got dinged up soon after. I recall Michael Batts getting some Carries that year too. In ‘91, no shame backing up Vaughn Dunbar. ‘93 played behind Jermaine Chaney. In ‘94 behind both Alex Smith and Chaney.

The whole OL from the ‘91 team had graduated and the ‘92 OL was banged up and not very effective. Trent Green had to run for his life that year. I might be off on the number, but want to say IU gave up what seemed like 50 or so sacks that year.
