Good God that university and school have crossed the line too many lines. It makes me wanna puke. They should just shut it down for a minute. I already have about zero respect for Urban, and the msu respect is already out the window, but if he entertains this I've bout had it.

They need 60’s icon Duffy Daugherty‘s ghost. Saban’s ghost isn’t on the market yet.

All kidding aside, I’ve seen some comments where ‘the very idea’ makes MSU alums sick too.

More mad at the dollar amounts being thrown around. And we're nervously worrying about Allen's buyout.

THAT is what financial investment for football success looks like. And they're in no better position financially to do it, than we are. They just care more to be good.

I don't want IU to turn in to MSU...they're nasty...but I sure would like the gumption to get good and stay good at football.

The problem is two fold: IU is cheap and they simply will not hire any coach whatsoever that isn't a purple unicorn. Think Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, or Jay Wright. It's the same for both football and basketball. We could've kept Wilson and hired Scott Drew or Bruce Pearl but no we're Indiana and we'd prefer to lose the right way.

great idea! too bad we wouldn't even consider it.

What makes you say they're in no better financial shape to do it than we are? They have a pretty full football stadium and have for at least 20 years. They also have Ford/GM money in both sponsorships for decades but also development money. Not to mention the obnoxiously rich alum (name escaping me....NBA guy) who, unlike Mark Cuban, has been very financially supportive of the department.

Not saying you're necessarily wrong, but is that based on hunch or evidence?

Sports is a funny thing.

I presume that most of us think that having good character or being a generally good person is a positive thing, but when it comes to kids playing a game with the logo of a school we like/went to on their uniform, so many would sacrifice core principles for wins.

Talk about a race to the bottom. I’ll pass on Urban.

We're evidently the most profitable athletic program in the country. We have plenty of money. And we have a bigger Alumni base. And we have our fair share of whale donors.

If the numbers being floated are even remotely accurate, we could spend half to 3/4 of that, get rid of Allen, AND dramatically upgrade our entire coaching staff.

Wilson was enough of a problem he was almost fired before he coached a single game. Drew has burned too many bridges in Indiana, and no way Pearl is touched with a 40 ft. pole after the Sampson debacle.

You're basing that profitability number off of something related to covid that was explained by Indy Star. It was a one time action by the IU Foundation.

Not all of our whale donors are as interested in supporting football. MSU has a rich tradition in both sports and financial support to go with it.

That’s because we don’t spend the money or have as many NCAA sports as other schools on that list. It’s like “Brewster Millions” at OSU, Texas and A&M. They can’t spend as much as they make. We just choose not to spend as much.

No. That's not it at all. It was a one-time donation from IUF to help cover the massive deficit created by covid.

That's exactly why we're such losers. At least we lose the right way. We have that going for us.

USA Today ran this piece over the summer:

Sampson has a great basketball mind, no doubt, but should have never been hired, and wouldn't have been if not for Adam Herbert. He was looking for ways to cheat from day 1. And we know he didn't care about players going to class or staying clean (and I don't just mean typical college shenanigans).

This ain't little league, it's big business. Just win baby! It's amazing to me how so many people around here can't understand that.

I never said I was perfect or looking for perfection. There's a difference between that and going after known cheaters just because they win. You have set up this false dichotomy between winning dirty and losing clean. How about winning clean?
And frankly, Pearl and Sampson haven't accomplished any more than Mike Davis when it comes to the overall glory that people seem so focused on. Most of our fanbase doesn't really value a championship season, it's Final Four or bust for most of them. We're so far removed from that being our measuring stick it isn't funny.

It’s amazing to me that an alumnus of this university doesn’t care about our reputatio.
Reputation is all in the eye of the beholder. If you worry about what other people think of you you'll never accomplish anything.

I understand and agree. I wonder if I have just lost morals, am tired of losing, or other.
Btw, what did Urben do? I only remember pics of him in a bar with some girl. Was there worse stuff I have forgotten?

And what exactly did Wilson Sampson and pearl do that was so terrible?

reputation is definitionally not in the eye of the beholder. It’s the opinion others have about you.

The opinion of others. Doesn't that mean eye of the beholder. And why should we care?

I think the following. Please correct if in error.
Wilson- Coerced players to play hurt. Had been warned several time but persisted. Went from us to OSU OC.
Sampson- trivial text stuff that is now legal. Tho it was the same texting recruits that got him canned at Oklahoma.
Pearl- It seems like he turned someone in for a rules violation. I need help here for better specifics. I do remember it made him very unpopular with his peer group.

With the NIL worrying about possible cheating when hiring a coach is completely moronic. You can literally pay the players as much as you want and it's legal.

I wasn’t talking about Urban Meyer specifically. It was more about the notion that IU should hire coaches with considerable baggage without any regard for the university overall. Some coaches aren’t a good fit for the university community. Wilson is an example. His behavioral issues might not have been a problem at a university located in a larger community. It’s easier to hide stuff when you’re in a place the size of Columbus, OH vs a smaller town like Bloomington, where word gets around easily.
