Interesting Take On How We Might End Up In Tampa (Outback Bowl)

https://www.si.com/college/indiana/football/indiana-bowl-projections-outback-bowl-in-play/

Could turn out to be one of those "be careful what you wish for" deals because we'll end up with a tougher opponent there (theoretically)...

It would be a Big Stage for a Statement Win though...
This would really be the best possible scenario for IU's football program. New Year's Day. Tampa. Home turf for many of our players (this area has become "IU-South" with respect to football). Warm weather. Pro stadium (site of the 2021 Super Bowl). Big crowd.

Seems like a longshot, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.

As of yesterday's new CFP Rankings, Penn State looks to be out of the NY6. This is not good for us and could send IU all the way back to the Pinstripe, which would really just suck. The projections are all over the board right now, but my optimism for a good bowl is low given the B1G's involvement in the decision.

Would it be another ACC opponent?

This scenario doesn’t work, if a Big Ten team is picked for the Orange Bowl, then the Citrus Bowl isn’t an option, which puts Minnesota in the Outback. The only way I see this as a possibility is if a Big Ten school were picked for the Cotton Bowl, then you don’t lose the Citrus.

Pinstripe would be better than Redbox. Lots of alums in the NY/NJ area and we traveled well to the Pinstripe in 2015.

The Redbox is better for teams further west than Indiana. It's difficult and expensive to get to.

Kind of stupid, all the contract talk. It says they have to pick a different team within the 6-year contract, but Iowa has gone there 3 of the last 6 years, and Michigan 2 of the last 7. I didn't see where it said what year they are in of the contract, but regardless, Iowa has to have been there at least twice. Pretty sure the contract means nothing if they pick whoever, anyway.

Why do you think PSU is out of the NY6 consideration at #10 ?

Because I'm definitely not an expert and the four or five articles and projections I've read 1) appear to indicate that and 2) have us going to Pinstripe or Detroit. A few links below that were produced after last night's CFP release. Hope they're wrong.

Ugh. Based on the new CFP rankings, and a piece I just read, the Outback is not in play for IU, and the Gator is looking less and less likely.

Can't wait for the final word on Sunday.

Somewhat contradictory articles/predictions.
CBS does have PSU out of NY6, but that is entirely predicated on Oregon beating Utah
While ESPN has PSU in the Rose bowl, with Wisconsin dropping below Auburn

I believe you...

The above was the first time I had read anything that actually made any reasonable case for the Outback, so I thought I'd throw it up there...

Pinstripe and Red Box are the two most likely, and with some back room deal making..., the Music City, and Gator are possible long shots , in my opinion...

I still like hoping we'd have a chance at going to Tampa (however unlikely that is;))...

I think some have PSU in the Cotton.

I don’t see that happening

In regards to bowl selection, most of the "national" college football writers appear to be making educated guesses especially when it involves a team like Indiana (they undervalue our program for sure, but its fair to say it currently has a limited national following).

From everything I've read from the beat writers, podcasters, and blog writers, who closely follow Indiana football, it sounds like there is roughly a 90% chance Indiana ends up in the Music City or Gator Bowl.

I've made hotel reservations accordingly.

No way we go to Detroit. MSU can’t jump us at 6-6

Unless..., Delaney screws us one last time on his way out the door... Expect the Worst from the Big Ten head office...
I know full well it's unbecoming to wish someone ill, but screw that dude. He can't leave town fast enough.

I'd hope, if nothing else, that both Pinstripe and RedBox would want a B1G other than IU--maybe Illinois and Michigan State (or vice versa).

And I hope Music City strongly prefers an ACC team this time around instead of another B1G 10 team again.

All of which could help IU end up in (with any luck) the Gator Bowl, not the QuickLane in Detroit. In any event, it appears definite that ONE of the teams in this season's Gator Bowl will be a B1G 10 team: https://www.jacksonville.com/sports...tor-bowl-will-go-sec-vs-big-ten-in-jan-2-game

He is really shady.

I see he gets a big, fat $20 million retirement package. This is a guy that is vehemently opposed to player stipends or reimbursement of any form.

I really don't see an 8-4 Team in the Quick Lane Bowl. I know the Gator Bowl is supposed to have the Big Ten Team this year not the Music City but deals can be made. Just like Michigan isn't really supposed to be in the Citrus Bowl...but if it's Michigan-Alabama hold the phone.

Minnesota in the Outback makes the most sense.

Here's a scenario that is probably not super likely but possible: Indiana-Texas in the Liberty Bowl (Memphis). It's supposed to be an SEC team but they are short a Bowl eligible team.

Or Indiana-Iowa St in the Texas Bowl (Houston). Same thing.

I'm not predicting either, just thinking through all the permutations.

So that pretty much rules out the Music City Bowl if they do indeed take a B1G team.

Unfortunately, I'm hearing a lot of Pinstripe Bowl talk....not just media people either.

Read an article yesterday where the Gator Bowl said they were “definitely “ taking a Big Ten team this year, that would rule out the MCB for the Big Ten. Many of the folks on the Iowa board seem to feel that if they don’t get the Holiday Bowl , it is Redbox for them, which leaves the Gator for IU. Still a lot of moving parts, nothing can , or will, be decided until conference championships are done.

Because we are not often in bowl games. the committee would not treat us unfairly, would they?
I honestly suspect the "powers that be" want to see tOSU in the CFP, Wisconsin, PSU, Michigan and Iowa in the best possible bowls, and don't really care much about the rest...

I'm afraid you're absolutely correct...

Possibly could be the other way. If the fanbase is considered hungry and might travel well. It's all about tickets and auxiliary spending and little else.

No. Once you put OSU in the playoff and one of Wis/PSU in the Bowl 6, you wind up with all bowl eligible b10 teams slotted to contractual games with no extra b10 teams looking for games.

The problem for IU, MSU and Illinois is that bowl reps saw the empty stands in home stadiums. They are trying to sell tickets and hotel rooms. TV execs will favor MSU, chamber of commerce types might rationalize that IU is most likely to travel (think MSU fan base is fatigued(.

It is my hope the Florida bowl committees are recognizing IU has never played in a Florida bowl, has numerous players out of Florida, and a large fan base here in FL (not to mention those willing to make the trip to a warm weather bowl) who will attend.

Someone needs to tell them that all they need to do to assure a certain sell out is to bill their Bowl as having the "Worlds Largest Tailgate Party" and invite us... ;)

Sorry I don't follow. Someone somewhere is going to have to fill the open SEC slot and that will in all likelihood involve a deal with a second Bowl. Some people seem to think deals never get made...Your diatribe about TV execs and hotel rooms actually helps my point, it doesn't disprove it.
