With all the "commentary" about recruiting how many stars and all. I read an interesting comment by the man in charge of the program. Not a guy at his computer with an idea of what IU needs for players, but the guy who's job ultimately is on the line.....

“To me, the best thing we’ve done in recruiting is the body types, and we’ve gotten longer. I was concerned two years ago, and I think it got us last year. I was concerned that we were getting a little small at receiver. In our world, if you want speed, sometimes you give up size. There are some big and fast guys, but a lot of them get gobbled up by traditional, historical places. In our world, if you want speed at a lot of positions, you get smaller. If you get smaller, you have matchup problems. So we’ve been able to identify some longer bodies that have the skill set that we need.”

It would appear that the coach has a formula as to what they are looking for in terms of developmental capacity. It appears body type and skill type TRUMP STARS.....

It would seem entirely possible that a year from now the Hoosiers could field an entire secondary of guys 6-1 to 6-3 who can run, cover, tackle and not be overmatched physically for 50/50 balls in the secondary. Guys who off blocks and make tackles for minimum yardage. Guys with that extra inch of reach that makes the difference between a pass that's knocked down and one that gets through for a first down.

It's possible that IU can put 3 and 4 wideouts on the perimeter that go 6-2 to 6-4 and can run and catch and block and make first downs.

It's entirely possible that IU can put defensive ends on the field who resemble guys that play at Wisconsin and Mizzou. Guys who are 6-3 to 6-5 and have long arms and can run.

It's entirely possible that IU will have consistent development of offensive lineman who are agile enough to pull and run and pass block. But who have the mass and technique to run their zone blocking principles.

I admit I get excited when I read Will Dawkins and Tyler Green were offered by OSU. But I know that most recruits don't see the field from anywhere but the sidelines. I equally get excited to read where kids IU is recruiting get offered by Louisville, Mizzou or Wisconsin.

Is the season here yet so we amateurs can quit whining about stars?
