This defense just got OLDER in the front line. I understand that guys in this system are interchangeable.
The projected starters are two seniors and a junior.
But Rayner to the nose is significant.
1. He's a 5th yr player
2. As an end/tackle over the OT, he's not remarkable physically. But at nose, he's pretty athletic and quick. For this defense that utilizes gap slants and penetration vs simply tying up blockers, he's got real potential to disrupt.
Latham is a big, physical strong side guy who can hold the point of attack vs power plays. Green is similar in size and makeup. At nose he's strong, but not a slasher. At the DT/E spot in this defense, like Latham, he's a tough guy to blow off the line of scrimmage. His long arms are in the passing lane.
Mangieri reminds me of former Colt Chad Bratzke.... Maybe because he's 6-5 and white. But it's prior to game one so he's CHAD BRATZKE until he isn't.
Maybe it's wishful thinking but I've got hopes for Robinson's development behind Mangieri, er Bratzke.
I would love to see Heffern get some quality production and chance to produce after sticking it out all this time.
But the real fun is BANDIT. And the flexibility that Shaw / Sykes / Gooch bring.
In obvious passing downs, it's possible to see Rayner at the nose. Mangieri at DT on the strong side and one of the 3 bandits (probably Sykes / Gooch) as the third down lineman with Shaw standing up at Bandit.
That's potentially a pretty good pash rush.
I'm not surprised to see Fant and Padmore emerge early as starters at corner. But look for all the "kiddies" to get time in the pre-conference games.
Hell. IU hasn't even gone through pre-game warmups in the first game and I'm psyched.
Go IU football.
