Bad news for Kansas in Maui next week as soph forward Brannen Greene has been suspended six games and will not travel with the team. Has been averaging around 12 points a game. Added to the current loss of Cheick Diallo along with Indiana's play thus far and the Hoosiers may actually be the favorite now to take home next week's Maui Invitational. Jayhawks should come in with a chip on their shoulder after blowing that second half lead against Michigan State earlier this week.
Related to that Vanderbilt really struggled at home yesterday against Stony Brook. Commodores trailed much of the later minutes before forcing overtime and eventually prevailed, 79-72. The IU-Wake Forest winners meets the Vandy-St. John's winner in Maui semis on Tuesday.
Here’s a link to the new scholarship numbers page showing that Indiana is currently undersigned by one grant for the 2016-17 season. Given that and past history, have to think the Hoosier staff will look to add a couple more players in the spring.
As for the Bruce Brown decision this week sources indicate that Indiana was first with his mother but not with others including Bruce himself. Like Indiana the Hurricanes had some late recruiting momentum with a big man pickup (Dewan Huell), feature a coach who’s been the Final Four and should field a pretty good team this season.
So the spring will be interesting since IU does have a couple scholarships they can play with and because you have undecided five-stars Rawle Alkins and Thon Maker, guys Indiana has already put in plenty of legwork with over the past year (and longer). It doesn’t look like Indiana will have to worry about Kentucky with Alkins now that UK has signed Malik Monk and DeAaron Fox. Main competition here may be St. John’s with NC State and UNC as possible spoilers.
Alkins can be a tough guy to please as he seems to prioritize schools bringing in their head coach more than a typical prospect. That’s why NC State and UNC have a real chance with his one year move to the Research Triangle area.
With Thon Maker the three schools getting the most mention right now remain Arizona State, Indiana and Notre Dame. An official visit to Arizona State in late January is likely his next campus trip. Sun Devils seem to be the popular pick among prognosticators but nobody seems to have a good handle on this one yet. Kansas got him in for an unofficial last week and is likely to earn an official trip later. The KU trip was an easy one as he was in Wichita with his Athlete Institute team from Ontario competing in the Tornado Alley Classic at Sunrise Christian. In his most recent game on Wednesday night for AI he had 32 points in a 95-63 victory.
The risk that Maker may never play college is still out there although he continues to say that’s not something he’s thinking about.
An interesting spring recruiting decision will be that of Josh Jackson. The Michigan native is the top overall player in the Class of 2016 and two Big Ten schools (Michigan State and Maryland) are in a heated battle with Arizona for his April signature.
There are only eight players among the top 100 that aren’t committed/signed and six of those are five-stars.
In other words not a lot left out there for the spring unless you find a under the radar type or a guy comes open via grad transfer, coaching change, etc. One under the radar guy is 6-foot-10 Bruno Fernando. Everybody needing some size is taking a look at the Monteverde Academy (near Orlando, FL) senior who had a big July to jump into the Rivals150 (at No. 141). Raw offensively and newer to the game (from Angola) but unique athleticism and IU has been mentioned some. Probably a longshot situation but a name to remember.
Of course there’s still Eron Gordon even though Eric Gordon Sr. made it clear Seton Hall is the current leader. At the same time there was no language indicating the door is closed and there is plenty of chatter around Indianapolis that the family would be open to taking a look at IU. Gordon was on campus at IU for Hoosier Hysteria in October and has made plenty of visits over the years.
Jaren Jackson Jr., a 6-foot-9 Indianapolis Park Tudor 2017 four-star forward, was spotted at the Maryland-Georgetown game. Since his father played at Georgetown, that visit is notable. Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon also made a visit to Park Tudor this fall.
This will probably be our last Big Ten roundup as most of you should be up to date on the early goings on of each team by ACC Challenge time.
Illinois (1-2) - lost a heartbreaker to Providence this week, 60-59. Indy native Jalen Coleman-Lands led with 17 points and fellow frosh Aaron Jordan played well. BC transfer Mike Thorne had a nightmare game. The 6-foot-10 post has normally been leading this team in scoring but was scoreless and fouled out in 13 minutes.
Of course last Friday the Illini were embarrassed at home by North Florida, 93-81. Illinois gave up 17 three-pointers and now are the only conference team with two losses.
Iowa (3-0) the exhibition loss to Augustana seems to have focused the Hawkeyes who humbled Marquette last night in Milwaukee, 89-61. Peter Jok has been playing well and soph Dom Uhl has come on the last week. Have a tough test versus Dayton next week and a win there would likely pit them against Notre Dame in the semis of the Advocate Invitational in Orlando.
Maryland (2-0) - the nation’s No. 3 team trailed by as many as seven in the second half before Melo Trimble (24 points) sucked it up and helped lead the Terps over arch-rival Georgetown in a much hyped match-up, 75-71. Five-star center Diamond Stone (7.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg) hasn’t had as big of a start as IU’s Thomas Bryant but Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter has been very good up front, averaging 11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent from the field.
Michigan (2-0) - early blowout wins over Elon and Northern Michigan. The top two scorers are the two guys John Beilein had to play without much of last season in Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton. Big game tonight at 9 pm ET against Xavier in another Gavitt Tipoff match-up (BTN).
Michigan State (2-0) - impressive comeback 79-73 win over No. 4 Kansas this week. Denzel Valentine was fantastic with a triple double and looks like a Big Ten Player of the Year candidate. Big man Matt Costello has been playing well despite foul trouble versus the Jayhawks. He’s averaging 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.
Minnesota (2-1) - Gophers had disappointing 75-70 loss to Temple yesterday at the Puerto Rico Shootout first round. Nate Mason did have a career high 21. Carlos Morris had 16.
Nebraska (2-1) - Huskers didn’t look ready for prime time in a 87-63 loss at No. 11 Villanova. Kansas transfer Andrew White has been a bright spot, leading the team in scoring. Aussie frosh Jack McVeigh is averaging nearly 10 mpg over the first three games.
Northwestern (2-0) - Hoosier native Bryant McIntosh led the Wildcats with 20 points this week in 79-72 win over Fairfield. Visitors had possession with a chance to tie with 1:41 left, so this one was tighter than expected. Frosh forward Aaron Falzon is off to a big start and leads Northwestern in scoring, averaging 16.5 ppg. Chris Collins and company face No. 1 North Carolina on Monday in Kansas City as part of the Hall of Fame Classic.
Ohio State (2-0) - can’t read much into an easy start for the Buckeyes that has included blowout wins over Mount St. Mary’s and Grambling State. OSU is going with five-star frosh and Hoosier native JaQuan Lyle at point and he leads the team in both assists (5.0 apg) and turnovers (3.5 tpg). Before facing Virginia in ACC Challenge, Thad Matta’s team does have a couple interesting games next week against Louisiana Tech and Memphis. The latter is next Friday in Miami.
Penn State (2-0) - home wins over VMI (62-50) and DePaul (68-62). Senior forward Brandon Taylor leading the way at 17.5 ppg. Dangerous road game at Duquesne tonight. Pat Chambers passed along bad news for the team last weekend when he announced that the NCAA did not clear frosh Mike Watkins, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound post player ranked No. 126 in the Rivals150.
Purdue (3-0) - no real tests yet in blowout wins over Vermont, NC A&T and Incarnate Word. Interesting game tomorrow at noon in Connecticut against Old Dominion, one of the favorites in Conference USA and a 27 win team last season. That’s a Hall of Fame Invitational game and winner likely to meet Florida on Sunday.
Isaac Haas has taken advantage of AJ Hammons absence to earn three starts and leads the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and is second in rebounding 8.0 rpg). Five-star frosh Caleb Swanigan is averaging a double-double (11.7 ppg/10.0 rpg). Hammond did return to play against Incarnate Word, his first game of the season after missing the exhibitions and first two games for undisclosed reasons.
Rutgers (2-1) - Scarlet Knights had double digit leads in second half at St. John’s yesterday but faltered down the stretch to lose, 61-59. Bishop Daniels came off the bench to lead with a career high 21 points. Free throws were a killer as Rutgers hit just 5-for-14. The Scarlet Knights led at one point, 50-36, so it was a real collapse.
At the same time getting to that lead showed progress for a team that looked a bit lackluster in early wins over Rutgers-Newark and Howard.
Wisconsin (2-1) - had the most shocking loss thus far in the league, falling in the opener at home to Western Illinois, 69-67. Since then redshirt frosh forward Ethan Happ has begun to step up to give this team an all important third scorer to go along with Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes. The Rivals150 player had 17 points and seven boards (both team highs) in 78-64 win over North Dakota.
Badgers have 4 p.m. game today in New York against Georgetown. That Gavitt Tipoff game will be shown on ESPN2.

Indiana heads out on the road this weekend to take on the Maryland Terrapins as they look to snap their six-game losing streak. The Terps come into the game with an overall record of 2-8, and a 0-6 Big Ten record. It has been a rough season for Maryland with the head coach, Randy Edsall, getting fired back in early October. Maryland has really struggled on offense, especially with their passing game as they have thrown 28 interceptions and are completing less than 50 percent of their passes. The game will kick-off at 12:00 p.m. EST and it will be televised on Big Ten Network. Below are the stories that Peegs.com and the Maryland Rivals site have done leading up to the game.

Indiana offensive lineman Jason Spriggs was named this week as one of six semifinalists for the Outland Trophy, which is award given to the top interior lineman in college football on offense or defense. You can read the release from the IUHoosiers.com site here.
It was also announced that Spriggs has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl which will be played in Mobile, Alabama. The Senior Bowl is a an all-star game for most of the top senior prospects for the NFL Draft. Spriggs is the first IU player under Kevin Wilson to get an invite to the Senior Bowl.
-----
There has been a lot of talk about whether or not Indiana should keep head coach Kevin Wilson after the 2015 season if IU does not make a bowl game. Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell is one person that thinks the Hoosiers would be making a big mistake if they let Wilson go. You can read his thoughts on the matter here.
-----
The Indiana staff picked up a commit this week but it wasn’t in the 2016 class. 2017 wide receiver Joshua Johnson from Central Arkansas Christian H.S. in North Little Rock, Arkansas committed to IU on Monday night. The three-star prospect is the earliest commit for Indiana since Kevin Wilson took over as head coach. Getting a commit from a quality recruit like Johnson this early is very encouraging for the program. It shows that prospects have confidence in the future of the program under Coach Wilson and his staff. Here is the story we did on Johnson after he committed.
-----
This past weekend the Hoosiers hosted three official visitors, including junior college QB Richard Lagow. The Texas native told Peegs.com he had a great visit to IU and it appears the Hoosiers are the team to beat for his commitment. You can read what Lagow said about his official visit to IU here.
Another official visitor this past weekend was IU commit Khalil Bryant. The three-star safety from Florida told Peegs.com he had a great time and he can’t wait to get his Hoosier career started. You can read the story we did on him here.
-----
The first two weekends look to be pretty big recruiting weekends for Indiana and one prospect who will be visiting on the weekend of December 4th is Florida safety Brandon Drayton. The three-star recruit is from the same high school as current Hoosiers Jonathan Crawford and Donavan Hale. You can read the story we did on Drayton here.
-----
Texas LB Maciah Long is currently committed to Kansas but there is a pretty good chance he ends up taking a visit to Indiana and a few other schools. The three-star prospect spoke to Peegs.com recently and here is the story we did on him and his recruiting.
-----
Another 2017 prospect that Indiana is in great shape with is Ohio athlete Lynn Bowden. The standout from Harding H.S. in Warren, Ohio told Peegs.com recently that the Hoosiers are the top school on his list of favorites. You can read the story we did on Bowden here.
-----
North Carolina running back Abdul Adams recently decommitted from Michigan State and Indiana is one of four schools that he has a great deal of interest in. You can read this story that Rivals.com did on Adams and what is next for him in recruiting.
-----
Indiana running back Jordan Howard is having an outstanding season despite missing two-and-a-half games with an ankle injury. This past weekend he gashed the Michigan defense for 238 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. ESPN.com did this story on Howard which shows why he is such a good player.

The NFL just finished up week 10 of the 2015 season and there are a handful of Hoosiers who are getting playing time for their respective teams. Each week Peegs.com puts out a weekly feature on how former Hoosiers playing in the NFL are doing. Here is the update on how four former IU players did in week 10 of the NFL season.
Former IU standout Tracy Porter is playing well for the Chicago Bears. You can check out this story from the Chicago Sun-Times that talks about the impact he has had on the Chicago secondary.
