Wednesday kicked off the big fall recruiting period that runs for two months (ends November 8th). That meant college coaches were out in force to see open gyms for younger and older prospects and to begin making in-home visits with seniors.
As our coverage indicated Indiana prioritized Top 35 ranked power forward De'Ron Davis, flying out to Colorado for an in-home visit on the first day.
Arizona was expected in last night for an in-home. If you have to handicap this one would place the Hoosiers first followed closely by the Wildcats with Texas in the third spot. He added Mississippi State, Arkansas, UConn and Oklahoma State but don't view those schools as serious threats right now. If any school would emerge from that group it might be Mississippi State.
After originally being expected to be in Philly yesterday to see Lamar Stevens, coach Crean had a schedule change and was in Indiana yesterday, catching Kris Wilkes of North Central. The 6-foot-7 junior forward was recently moved to No. 10 overall in the country. Heard he excelled his final few days in Las Vegas to end the summer eval period and that helped push him to that elite status.
Wilkes is a smart student who has mentioned engineering and math as potential career paths so he'll end up with an interesting school list. This week alone he's already attracted Indiana (head coach), Stanford (head coach), Kentucky, UCLA, Butler (head coach), Michigan, Ohio State with more to come.
Fort Wayne big man Malik Williams also moved up to No. 35 in this week's new 2017 rankings and Indiana assistant Tim Buckley was in to see him yesterday. Also in have been Michigan State, Purdue and Cincinnati. Believe all of those schools have now offered. Malik may be 7-foot now if you listen to some of those around him.
An interesting twist yesterday to this one yesterday when Cincinnati offered Malik's older brother Devlyn. He's around 6-foot-7 and signed last May with Chattanooga State, a junior college. Nice player but a bit surprising to see this high level of an offer for him. At the same time he was a big reason Snider was the only in-state team to knock off Caleb Swanigan and Homestead last season.
Schools were out in force also for Park Tudor junior Jaren Jackson Jr. Yesterday morning brought in IU, Butler, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford and UCLA. Louisville is also getting involved as former Hoosier assistant Kenny Johnson spoke this week with Jaren Sr.
The increased interest could be due to a growing feeling that Georgetown (where his father played) is not the clear leader as thought earlier this summer.
Speaking of the Hoyas, Georgetown and Indiana seem to have emerged as the early frontrunners for Massachusetts guard Bruce Brown. Early the operative word as he appears headed to a spring signing. Brown hasn't really made the campus rounds and is looking at "October or November" visits per Jeff Rabjohns' article yesterday quoting Vermont Academy head coach Alex Popp.
While we've often discussed here the belief that the Hoosiers and Hoyas lead for Richmond (Va.) area native Curtis Jones --- it may be a significant note that the Huntington Prep (WV) players got through both of those campus officials without committing to either program. He's scheduled to be at Oklahoma State this weekend.
Miles Bridges, the Huntington Prep teammate of Jones who also made his IU official two weeks ago, continues to sound like a longshot. He's visiting Michigan State today amid growing speculation that Kentucky is his favorite with the Spartans a close second.
While the Spartans may lose Bridges to UK, Izzo and company seem to be in the driver's seat with in-state top 30 ranked point guard Cassius Winston. That seemed to lead to Michigan dropping off Winston this past week and quickly landing former IU target Xavier Simpson. Winston is joining Bridges today on their official trips to East Lansing. Those two have been longtime teammates on The Family Nike EYBL club team.
A bit more of an Indiana vibe with Philly area forward Lamar Stevens. Is that due to the departure of Emmitt Holt, another undersized but overachieving four? Maybe. Penn State, however, is still very strong with him and is hosting Stevens this weekend for an official visit (related story)
So a similar theme here in that IU appears to lead or be in top two for four guys (Davis, Jones, Brown, Stevens) with Thon Maker and Rawle Alkins as your interesting spring wild cards.
Point guard Jaylen Fisher may be a less interesting wild card to mention. He's now set up three officials (local news story) - a trip last weekend to Arkansas and trips to UNLV this weekend. Later this month he'll take an official in his hometown to Memphis. LSU, Indiana and Baylor are the other of the six finalists that would be in the mix for his final two allotted officials.
Keep in mind Fisher played last summer with Hoosier freshman forward O.G. Anunoby on the Team Thad club (Under Armour circuit).
Another connection worth noting is Rawle Alkins will play his final prep season in the Raleigh, North Carolina area at Word of God Academy. That's where new Hoosier Josh Newkirk prepped and hea also played for new Word of God coach Brian Clifton on the D-One Sports club team. Alkins tie to Clifton is brand new and not very strong but one to watch (see: CBS story)
The current Indiana players have sent out some hand written notes this month to former Indiana players. Several former Hoosiers reported that to us this week and A.J. Guyton actually posted an image of the one he received from Max Bielfeldt. Both are Peoria natives.

The big story from the season opener for the Hoosiers was the absence of nine players who were suspended for the contest after violating team rules at some point over the summer. Here is the story Peegs.com put out the day of the SIU game that talks about the suspensions. This week every player but Tegray Scales will be back and cleared to play. Scales has a two-game suspension.
What is somewhat strange is Coach Kevin Wilson was adamant at his weekly press conference on Monday that these were not suspensions, but then just a few hours later he released a statement saying they were suspensions.
The one player who also missed last week’s game was starting safety Chase Dutra. The Brownsburg, Indiana native was out because of an injury and it is uncertain when he will return.

Another visitor for the SIU game was 2017 in-state defensive end Britt Beery. The standout from Carmel H.S. picked up his first offer from the Hoosiers during his visit to Bloomington last Saturday.

Former Indiana running back Tevin Coleman has been named the starting RB for the Atlanta Falcons. Here is a story from NFL.com that talks about Coleman winning the job with the Falcons.
Also, former Indiana defensive lineman Bobby Richardson has made the Saints roster after going undrafted and signing as an undrafted free agent. It is not easy for undrafted players to make a 53 man roster so it shows how impressive Richardson played in training camp for the Saints. You can check out this story on Richardson making the team.
