Covid, not politics. Twenty-one counties are now in the red (highest) restriction zone. NE Indiana is getting hit especially hard. At least three counties (Marion, Allen, Floyd) have taken advantage of the options offered by the governor's new order to impose additional restrictions on businesses, including limiting restaurant/bar/gym capacity and hours. I assume more will be following suit shortly. It seems the governor is determined not to impose these restrictions on a state-wide level this time around.

I suspect he is trying desperately to keep the economy chugging through the holiday shopping season as much as possible. This is the time of year that really pumps life into the retail world. In restaurants, it's often said that November and December are when you make the money you need to pay February and March bills. But with hospital resources reaching critical limits, I wonder how long he can hold out.

A restaurant in town just announced they are closing next week as they expect the shutting down of Kirkwood for outdoor eating, which has helped, isn't going to help in the colder weather. I suspect several more places will close. It is going to be a long hard winter in the restaurant world. And it needn't have happened, we could easily cover restaurant wages and rents in a stimulus (which I covered in a different thread).

IF we can get a stimulus passed we can save this economy from a real disaster. Vaccines will be around in good numbers within 6 months. It is ridiculous nothing is happening.

Monroe just went from yellow to orange and new restrictions were just announced. The IU COVID spokesman made a point that IU's testing has been better than community. It isn't that IU is infecting the community, the community is infecting IU.

Bed Bath & Beyond on the west side is closing down.

That sure won't impact me.

Two places we ate at frequently were Opies and Bloomington Sandwich Company. Opies went out a couple months ago, and BSC goes out next week. If Cafe Pizzeria goes under I will just be out of downtown restaurants.

I can try to get used to Fat Dan's Italian Beef to replace BSC. Maybe it was better than I remember.

Closing for Covid or out of business?

That’s really sad.

Bloomington bars/restaurants lost Little 5 and graduation money entirely. My neighbor used to be a manager at Nicks, he said how those two events gave restaurants the money to make it to September. They now will lose 8 weeks of students, some of it during B10 basketball for the bars. I think we will lose more.

The government could easily pay 100% of rent until April for restaurants everywhere. With that covered, they might well make it until the vaccine.

Agreed. Sucks. When this all passes new ventures will come in and downtown will be back. Doesn’t mean much to the poor folks who lost their businesses in the meantime.

Me neither, just an indication of how bad brick and mortar retail has gotten. They're a modern, major player. That whole shopping center is hollowing out. Will be mostly vacant between Office Depot and Lowes.
For good for the two restaurants. I expect more will close, the numbers are just not good. Students leave Friday and are not to return until February.
This will impact the Bloomington "scene" for years to come. Bars, restaurants, and specialty shops are what defines most small town and city downtowns. Long term I think this will hurt more than the Great Recession.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware of that. Where is Lori going to sell all her Shark junk?

I think they are actually in a bit of a turnaround at this point.... but they were doing terrible for years. They brought in a new mgmt team a year or so ago, and their plan was always to close quite a few of their stores. They were literally looking like they were headed towards bankruptcy a year ago... but seem to have streamlined and finally got a decent online operation going.

Not just because of COVID, but I barely go into brick & mortar stores anymore. Unless it’s something I need immediately, I’m willing to skip the store and wait 1-2 days to get it from Amazon. And I’ve used grocery pick up since it started at the local stores. F*** it, let someone else get all my shit together and put it in my truck. One exception is the local meat market. I like to hand pick my steaks and the occasional brisket. Oh, and the liquor store. They still don’t deliver.

I buy my share of stuff online, but I prefer to go to the store and see and touch and feel. Store clerks and shopkeepers need jobs too. They can't all work in distribution centers or drive for UPS.

FIFY. You misplaced the period.

Those who order shut downs need to be kicked out of their safe harbors. If those who order that, or their kids, would lose their jobs, lose their life savings, or lose their retirement accounts, we might see a different and more targeted approach.

I often wonder what the hell we are all going to do in 10-20 years. White collar jobs now more than ever impacted by automation and offshoring. A replay of what happened to our factories.

Everyone shops online. Working from home, it depresses me seeing the number of Amazon delivery trucks per day (on top of UPS, USPS, and FedEx). I guess we can all drive delivery trucks...at least until that goes to self driving. :(

It’s going to be more than a long hard winter for restaurants. They will be gone. Many restaurants don’t have cash reserves to survive this. If they’ve been successful maybe they can leverage their personal assets and try to start over.

Maybe they can all invite Governor Newsom to hold illegal parties in their restaurants.

11 million tests in 5 days!!

No the obvious answer is to let God sort it out. Let it run rampant and run its course.

Have it take up all of the ICU beds so if you break your hip, well too bad the hospitals are full so tough luck. You're probably old so you're going to die of something anyway.

But not only are the ICU's full, they are also half staffed because our heath care workers are now getting it. The mayo clinic currently has something like 300 of their 1200 staff out with covid.

It's also ravishing our community so our police force and fire protection is way understaffed because....everyone has the damn covid and there's no end in sight. So if you're house burns well, sorry man. There are only 3 firefighters available.

We currently are now getting 150k to 200k new cases a day and it's growing.

A percentage of those people will need to be hospitalized in two to three weeks...sucking up all of its resources.

Of course a percentage of those hospitalizations will result in death, along with other emergency situations because there are no beds and hospitals are understaffed.

THAT'S how to do it. Just do nothing and let it run free.

Things are significantly worse than they were this spring. Especially given how widespread the virus is now. These numbers are staggering.

In the spring, the idea that we needed to keep infections under the maximum that hospitals could treat seemed very reasonable. Now that is viewed as communism.

I heard an interview with an ER doc who was asked if they could handle a multiple car crash. His answer was no, they have no room at all. In smaller communities people in accidents, with heart attacks, strokes, are going to die because the closest hospital cannot accept them and they have to travel to a regional. And in some cases the closest regional cannot take them.

I heard a doctor in South Dakota yesterday suggest that they are heading for triage where only the patients with the best chance of surviving are accepted.

I wonder if that will be called a death panel.

The death numbers are 3-5 747s crashing everyday. If air travel was that unsafe, we’d do something about it.

Almost 1900 Americans died yesterday and the POTUS doesn’t give a shit. He gave up on pretending to care months ago. I don’t understand how he is not held accountable for the total dereliction of duty. He’s simply not doing his job.

In an authoritarian system, they can have the army just swoop in and do those things much easier.

I guess its the price you pay for 'freedom'.
I think it’s actually muted hysteria. I know wealthy, functioning Trumpthongs sending thousands to save the Trump presidency because “only he can prevent the impending civil war.” No joke.

Nobody in power took Hitler seriously in the late 20s. Same with Milosevic. Pathological demagogues connect to certain masses.

Hitler and fascism was supposedly better than communism. Today Trumpism is supposedly better than the rampant socialism of the Democratic party. Why else does Fox promote AOC so much as being the leader of the Dems?

To be fair, he was somewhat held to account by his loss in the election. I suspect history will not be kind based both on his dereliction of duty and the fact it's generally written by liberal arts majors.

LOL. Why don't those conservative arts majors do something about that?

I don’t believe math is a liberal arts major. Right now the math says we have over 250,000 dead and adding 1500-2000 a day. It’s also worth noting that we are performing at the very bottom in global comparisons.

Not true.
Brazil is very, ever so slightly, worse, in terms of death as a percentage of population. Maybe add in a few very small, poor countries.

We have 4.5% of the world's population and 18.6% of the world's COVID-19 deaths. There really isn't any good way to spin that, other than that we are finally below 20% of the world's total. Yippee. We are only 4 times worse than average, as (supposedly) the most technologically advanced society.
