I just read the hoosier huddle write up on Illinois.
Their leading tackler was a DB.
What position should lead a team? If a DB leads does that imply many passes were completed in his area?
I would have guessed you would want LBers to lead in tackles.

It is a typo.

Leading tackler was Tarique Barnes, Linebacker.

Alot depends on how your safeties play. I ran an aggressive defense and my safeties often led the team in tackles because they read the run so quickly. We ran a coverage that allowed the safeties to do this while protecting them on passes based on reads. LBs face OL blocking them while safeties avoid that.

I'll be watching how we cover their TE's... Lunney loves throwing to his TE's... I hope we jump some of those routes...

HS I assume?

In HS you want your best athletes in space to make plays, which is often a safety. Like Jay Cutler was a safety at Heritage Hills and Jason Werner was a safety at Roncalli.

I’d imagine in college you always want your LBs to lead the team in tackles.

My take on SI’s summary is the matchup is likely Allen and Wilt v. Illini OL (Bielema) for control of the line of scrimmage (to stuff the Illini rushing attack). Walt winning TOP will be to Allen’s advantage.

“Brett Bielema enters his second season as the head coach at Illinois. Quarterback Brandon Peters is now on the Los Angeles Chargers, … Sitkowski will likely start the season as the backup to Syracuse transfer Tommy Devito. Devito started all 12 games for Syracuse as a sophomore, but played in seven total games across the next two seasons. He has a career 58.9 completion percentage with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. 1,000-yard rusher Chase Brown and 500-yard rusher Josh McCray return to form a solid backfield for Illinois, and leading receiver Isaiah Williams is back after a 500-yard redshirt freshman season. Leading tacklers Sydney Brown and Tarique Barnes return for the Illini, depsite the loss of Kerby Joseph who had five interceptions in 2021.”
