Alme Otter has been proposed as a new Illinois mascot----nothing official yet, won out over Sissy the Squirrel.

From Chief Illiniwek to Alme Otter......yikes.

Dick Butkis & Red Grange would be proud.

If they are going with river-dwelling mammals, why not go with the Nutria? They already have orange teeth.

I get why they decided to dump Chief Illiniwek. I'm not sure I really agree with the decision, but it's easy to understand why they made it.

That said, I went to a football game in Champaign back when they still had the Chief. I thought it was one of the coolest things in college sports. And I didn't get the impression that what they did with it was in any way disrespectful to Native Americans. In fact, I'd probably argue the contrary.

Illinois otter choose the state flower: the blue violet. Wouldn't that be ... uh....something.

And their fur makes for good hats. Not quite Sable, but the difference is negligible. Bob Sacamano sells them down in Battery Park....forty bucks.
I see what you did there. The episode where Elaine has to hunt down the poet warrior Peterman in Burma...er, I mean, Myanmar. And George steals his date's table clock to score another date. Larry David and his dark twisted humor.

Lol, I want to be clear that I HATE this idea ... but it is at LEAST somewhat of a pun and not totally random. The mascot - which would simply be a doofus at the games for the kids, not affecting the “Fighting Illini” name or our logos - would be named Alma Otter after the large Alma Mater statue on campus.

Again, I don’t like it but it’s not as hilariously horrible as it would be if that weren’t the case.

I agree, it was a really cool tradition at football games and seemed to be respectful. But I suppose it is stereotypical and a race or ethnicity being used as a "mascot" is out of bounds these days.

I'm only guessing how I would feel if I was Native American, but I think if things were done respectfully I would appreciate the nod to my culture.

The Redskins however...…..

They should have to be the Fighting Whities for the next 100 years. Fighting Illwhitey.

99% of the other people there didn't think it was wrong either, including those of Native American heritage. All it takes today is for that squirrelly 1% to complain and the other 99% are brought to their knees out of fear of a lawsuit, all for the fulfillment of political correctness. When did our governing officials decide the sight of a Native American mascot was such an undesirable image? Is it a subversive plot theirs to help us forget about them altogether? Has Pocahontas been banned from the library, too? Can I no longer "Tak-hom-a-sak" of burgers from Steak and Shake? How much longer do we have to put up with this kind of insanity?

Laugh at Illinois all you want, but Fred Glass is probably sitting in his office right now thinking, "What a GREAT idea, Indiana needs to do something like that..."

Please don't get him started down this road or we'll end up with a pork tenderloin sandwich mascot.

All we needed to do 50 or 60 years ago was to have settled on the Bison and we'd be past the point of Fred trying to get creative (read: destructive).

The Kentucky hillbillys yelled across the river, “Who’s here?”. Someone on the other side yelled back, “Hoosier?”.The rest is not history...”Ladies and gentlemen, your Indiana Who’s Here’s!”

I like the "Illinois flatlanders". They can still do the chop, they just need to rotate their hand 90 degrees.

"Woa oh oh oh oh oh.....weeeee....count...telephone poles!"
