I'll start throwing out the names......(10 to consider)

Two things narrow the list down a bit in my mind.

One, I don't think we'll see Fred Glass taking any chances on moral "rehab projects" on his way out the door (and he'll be the guy signing off on this hire).

Two, Tom Allen just said this morning (in the video interview on this sites front page), that he planned to keep the Offensive system/concepts that we are currently running..., which narrows things down a bit...

With that in mind..., here's a name: Aaron Keen, the current OC up at Eastern Michigan...

He's beaten all three Big Ten teams that he's faced (all at their place) over the past 3 years... Granted those teams weren't world beaters but you have to remember that Eastern Michigan was scheduled by each of them to be a "sacrificial lamb" type of warm up game and they consistently (3-0) flipped the script (one of my personal favorites being their Win over the great Brohmardi , at the p u mud hole, in 2018)...:D:):D

They also beat IL down at their place this year and Rutgers at their place back in 2017...

Keen just might be a diamond in the rough...

I mentioned him yesterday in another thread. IIRC his team/offense plays against Pitt in the Quick Lane Bowl on Dec. 26th.

Two more guys I mentioned in that thread will be in bowl games this Friday the 20th: Jim Zebrowski (Buffalo) and Mike Sanford (Utah State).

Didn't see it..., but I've been distracted lately... Are you sure it was over here on the Free Site???

If I recall correctly..., you made the early call for Deboer so we are all counting on you to go 2 for 2...;)

Appreciate your insights...

I think Allen said something very important in the press conference today:

He’s keeping the DeBoer scheme. He likes it. Thinks it works well and maintains the consistency. Said something to the effect that he’s not going to put the program on its third offensive system in 4 years. I think he’ll get another guy that likes the RPO and using an athletic QB.
I hope he does! I just don't want to see somebody promoted to the job from within. We don't want guys that are learning on the fly anymore. I hope that Coach Hart gets a crack at being OC one day, but it needs to be after he shows he can do the job at a smaller school first.

no worries at all; I posted them on the premium board and should've done so here too

there are several MAC guys this time around worth mentioning:

your guy Keen is definitely intriguing: https://emueagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/aaron-keen/1308

actually 2 guys at Buffalo, Zebrowski and Kotelnicki:

https://ubbulls.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jim-zebrowski/144

https://ubbulls.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/andy-kotelnicki/63

the biggest "name" likely to be on the market, Mike Sanford: https://utahstateaggies.com/coaches.aspx?rc=364&path=football

Troy's OC Ryan Pugh: https://troytrojans.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/ryan-pugh/1277

Tulane's OC (formerly at Memphis) Will Hall: https://tulanegreenwave.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/will-hall/1179

a guy Mark Milton mentioned whose current team I've seen live before, Kevin McGiven: https://sjsuspartans.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/kevin-mcgiven/437

an IU guy who (surprisingly IMO) is paid less as OC than DeBoer is by IU, Justin Frye: https://uclabruins.com/staff-directory/justin-frye/3701

Sanford would be my #1 on this list. McGiven maybe #2. Frye was always on my radar as OL coach back when it was open, not sure how I see him as an OC candidate.

not sure how his dad would feel about it, or if their family knows Allen, but maybe this guy https://ballstatesports.com/staff-directory/joey-lynch/278 is an off-the-wall choice

IIRC his offense scored more vs IU than UConn, Rutgers or Northwestern, and almost as much as Locksley's Maryland offense

Sanford's got a great resume overall, but I'd like to know what REALLY happened at Western Kentucky. Not sure he'd be a good fit with Cristobal's philosophy at Oregon, but maybe he ends up at Texas to help Herman save his job?

Speaking of Texas and Herman, I wonder what Larry Fedora's doing these days? He apparently left UT to look for a head coaching job, but I haven't heard that he's found one yet https://hookemheadlines.com/2019/11...y-fedora-land-another-head-coaching-position/

Noticed JL...

For the "we don't play anybody group", Ball State ended up with the #1 ranked Offense in the MAC (which means they were a threat to beat anyone on their schedule)...

I think Joey Lynch is probably a long shot for our job and most likely will parlay his success at Ball State into a head coaching job in the MAC at some point...

I hadn't noticed until the other day that Brian Wright has apparently left Toledo for a head coaching job (Div. II evidently) so UTol is possibly in the market for a new OC unless they promote internally.

Mike Neu is the head coach and play caller, Lynch is OC in name only

Maybe - Keen - co-OC passing game & Hart co-OC running game — that might solidify keeping Hart!

Coordinators grow on coaching trees. The most productive offensive trees out there are the Art Briles Tree (Kendall Briles, Gebby, Dino Babers) and the Leach Tree (too many too list). Most of those guys are hard to get. The other two guys that have really taken offense to another level is Norvell who spawned Chip Long, Ryan Silverstein, Dillingham, and Kevin Johns (Johns has suceeded in many other places). With the exception of Johns no one there is available. The other tree that is forming is around Billy Napier (Rob Sale and Tim Leger). That's the 40 pt a game club. Bunch of guys at other places in the 34 pt a game club including Deboer. Lot of good names on these lists. Guys I'd take a hard look at is Rob Sale, Johns, Ball State's guy, Will Hall, and maybe Arkansas State's coordinator. (Larry Fedora tree). I like the running spread better than the passing spread so Will Hall, and anybody from the Norvell coaching tree would be more appealing to me.

What exactly is Kalen Deboer's offense? Is it a passing spread that sets up the run later in the game? His offense is pass heavy, however, he pounded Sampson James early against Purdue.

FWIW I am sitting in the middle of the SMU section and they are ripping Lashlee. Not sure who is calli plays for FAU but is doing a real good job. I see that DJ MC Carthy is signaling the plays in.

I didn’t watch a lot of the game but the part I was watching, they stated that Charlie Weis’s son was calling the plays for FAU.

I would take Will Hall in a heartbeat. The guy runs a very up-tempo pro style attack. His offense is probably faster than Wilson’s. He’s also got a great southern drawl. His offense averaged over 455 yards per game and 33 ppg. They are balanced on run and pass and averaged 6.2 yards per play last year.

I really thought he did an outstanding job of calling plays. Had a good mix of run and passs. They stretched the field vertically and horizontally. It was the best I had seen their quarterback play this year. Really liked their game plan.

Does he run the same or similar system as DeBoer? If not - I doubt he is an option!

Hall would be my choice also. Not sure what the fascination with Sanford is. Utah State's offense went backward under his direction, he flunked out of Western Kentucky and he was viewed as a puppet of Kelly at ND.

Keen is interesting because he's done well with very little at Eastern Michigan and I assume he runs Deboers offense. His stats at Eastern were similar to Deboer's. I like the guy from Buffalo. Another guy who has done well with weak recruiting classes.

.......up for debate. Who is the new OC?

  1. Bob Stitt - generally considered one of the great offensive minds. Currently at Texas St.
  2. Mike Sanford - OC at Utah St. Been virtually everywhere.
  3. Bodie Reeder - former OC at Eastern Washington and now with North Texas
  4. Kerwin Bell - USF OC, former Florida assistant, knows the Florida area very well.
  5. Will Hall - OC @ Tulane, former West Alabama and West Georgia head coach. Strong recruiter in south.
  6. David Yost - OC, Texas Tech. Semifinalst for the Broyles Award in 2018. The hair alone should get him a look. Known as a QB-whisperer.
  7. Mike Yurchic - QB coach / OSU passing game coordinator. Is on 2-year contract at $950,000 per year.
  8. Tom Manning - Iowa State OC, former Colt TE coach, he is making $650k per season.
  9. Kendal Briles - Likely targeted as the new OC at Arkansas but had prolific offenses in Houston and Baylor.
  10. Rich Rod - not expected to be retained at Ole Miss after the firing of Matt Luke. The guy has been a head coach everywhere and is from the Midwest and considered a top offensive mind. Disregard the shenanigans at Arizona.

Has anyone suggested that you pay Chris Petersen 4 million to be DC or that Petersen would come here.. despite the fact that his background is on offense?

Because we got that beauty on our premium board this morning lol

Other schools have been looking for OCs too, Penn State, Northwestern, and South Carolina among them. Here are what some commentators are saying about their options . . . might be fodder for IU to consider too.

Penn State: https://www.pennlive.com/pennstatef...ace-ricky-rahne-as-offensive-coordinator.html

Penn State: https://www.statecollege.com/news/l...ive-coordinator-hires-for-year-seven,1482020/

Northwestern: https://www.insidenu.com/2019/12/3/...-mccall-pat-fitzgerald-matt-canada-tommy-rees

South Carolina: https://www.thestate.com/sports/col...h-carolina/usc-football/article237943034.html

The name that strikes me is Joe Brady, who was the passing game coordinator for LSU this past year after having been the Saints' passing game coordinator. Burrow will be gone, and I don't know whether LSU has a quality replacement for the Heisman Trophy winner. If - and this is a big if - Brady wants an OC job to take a step toward an HC job, then IU - with 2 and potentially 4 - quality QB talents in the stable - might be an offbeat, but solid opportunity for a guy like Brady. Hart could co-exist with Brady pretty well, so long as the personalities fit, with Hart focused on coordinating the run game and soaking up what a guru like Brady would bring to the passing game.

Sure, it's a flier . . . but a guy can dream, can't he?
Does he run the same Offense as DeBoer? Because that's what Allen says he's looking for.

I think he already knows who he wants because he would say that if they guy wouldn't run the same Offense. That's why I'm afraid it will be an internal promotion - or else maybe a disciple of DeBoer?

And didn't DeBoer coach at Eastern Mich? Maybe there is a connection there.
