nothing to see here, move along.
from your quoted Newsweek article.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The paper, "Unusual Features of the SARS-CoV-2 Genome Suggesting Sophisticated Laboratory Modification Rather Than Natural Evolution and Delineation of Its Probable Synthetic Route," is authored by Dr. Li-Meng Yan and three colleagues affiliated with the Rule of Law Society, a group not known for its work on infectious disease.

wtf happened to Newsweek?
is it even remotely possible to totally misrepresent who Li-Meng Yan and her colleagues are any more than this, and do so deliberately, knowingly, and with malice, for the express purpose of falsely discrediting who she and her colleagues are.

"Background
Yan's hometown is
Qingdao.
[7] Yan received her
MD degree from Xiangya Medical College of
Central South University. She went on to earn her PhD from
Southern Medical University.
[8] Her research includes the study of
The inhibition effect of propranolol on the corneal neovascularization in an alkali-induced injury mouse model[9] and the challenges in developing a universal influenza vaccine.
[10] At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic she was employed at the Hong Kong School of Public Health,
University of Hong Kong (HKU), conducting research specialised in virology and immunology.
[11]
COVID-19
Yan claims that she was one of the first scientists in the world to study the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, after Leo Poon, her supervisor at HKU (a WHO reference lab), asked her to look into a cluster of
SARS-like cases in Wuhan, in December 2019.
[7] According to
Fox News, Yan maintained an extensive network of medical professionals from mainland China, one of whom told Yan about human-to-human transmission of the novel disease on 31 December 2019.
[12] According to Yan, she reported her findings about the virus multiple times to her superiors, including one on 16 January, after which she says she was warned by her supervisor "to keep silent and be careful."

i realize just how beyond crazy partisan this and other social media is, but none of us here know the actual truth on this including you.
what i do know, and all others should, is that if this is man made in China, that no truth on earth would be pushed back against more virulently and aggressively by the US and most govts, and all corporate media, which essentially means all media.
corporations don't fear the US govt, they control the US govt, but they absolutely do fear the Chinese govt whom they don't control, and whom they are dependent on.
it will be interesting to see if she can back up her claim.
that said, even if she can, the universal push back she would get from every direction and every powerful entity on earth, including the health science field which is still totally corporate or politically dependent, would still be almost impossible to overcome.
we might be able to handle the truth, but Wall St not so much.
if true, the corporate, financial, and political world, (basically all real power on earth), would fight that truth to the death like nothing else, which absolutely should be taken into account.
