and we win, the press would have written about the great goal line stands in the first half that only got Tenn 3 pts. The curious Tenn coaches decision to play their backup QB. The adjustments IU made at halftime to stop the Tenn line. Holding their star receiver to 2 catches. The no quit attitude as IU came back and scored on the FG. etc. Not saying that FG alone won or lost the game just how it would have been a totally different perspective on just that one play.

History is written by the victors.

IMO, that decision may have won UT the game. Their starting QB was rattled and ineffective until he sat out for a drive and composed himself on the sidelines. BTW, the UT fans near us were cussing the coach for playing the starting QB at all . . . and cussed louder when he was put back in . . . until they realized he was making good decisions.

yep. that's the culture we live in. you're only as good as you're last game. and sometimes even you're last play.

Could be but doubtful. Most of the time when you send in a new QB it is to give the offense a jump start. This guy goes in and throws back to back passes that were near interceptions and bobbled the ball another time clearly a high risk situation. Coach new he had to get him out.

OK, let's posit all of that is true. How did Guarantano play after he went back in? Was he more effective or not?

Actually I was more impressed with their OL and the WR routes. Tenn offense was 3 and out first two possesions Guarantano came back in. Then their OL dominated after that in the 4th qtr (Cam Jones injury didn't help us at the same time). That opened up both passing and running plays. The bigger point of the original post was how the narrative would have changed in the press if the FG was good. I even thought he might start Campbell after the Purdue game.

Your description of what might have been is spot on. This is what is so maddening about the defeat. Someday I would like to watch a replay of the game. just not today, tomorrow, or anytime soon. It still hurts, the thinking we're going to lose, then thinking we're going to win, then the sinking feeling that sneaks up on you, the self-inflicted numbness that ultimately defines IU football. We carry on as best we can.
