but there has been a couple of football players who has contributed for some good teams over the years. I remember Tony Gonzalez playing well for a Cal team who went to the sweet 16 and Julius Peppers played well for a UNC team that I think went to a final four.

Few and far between, though

James Hardy is as close as IU has come in recent memory to a football player who was actually talented enough to help the IU basketball team. And, there were times where he just looked slow on the court.

It used to be that colleges used basketball as a way to help keep football players in shape, but those days are long gone.

That said, I hope this kid can help IU shore up the middle.

I can remember two under RMK

Randle El and Ross Hale were both football players who played some basketball. Also remember James Hardy actually started at IU as a basketball player then turned to football.

You must not be old enough to remember Antwaan Randle El.

He was a pretty good basketball player.

Re: I can remember two under RMK

Neither of those two really contributed..even Hardy barely did, he was too beat up after fball, he lacked his usual explosion

If only IU can get some baseball players.....

It would be just like year one.

You know things are going well when a FB player is seen as a contributer.

always a gimmicky move

gives coaches a chance to talk about heart and determination but will have no impact on the program whatsoever

Doesnt it have to be that way?

If you play football you can't be on a scholarship go another sport, right? I thought they did that so schools wouldn't have 6'7" 300lb soccer midfielders

Randle El

I saw one of the rare appearances by ARE. He stole the ball twice from the point guard and made a 3 point shot or at least a long 2, I don't remember. I don't remember much more about his basketball career. but he would have been a great defensive player and I am sure developed into a good PG.

The best part of those terrible years

Kip is a great guy. My son is friends with him. He was living a dream just to practice and dress with the team. We never cheered louder than when he would go into the game.

His family restaurant, Kiplee's, is a good place for Pizza, Stroms, and a cold beer while watching a basketball game.

But yes, it is unfortunate he had to play.

Levron Williams

Terrific high school player and I believe played some on the basketball team early in his career.

Re: forgot about Quinn Buckner

And he was still drafted by the NFL. If I have any memory cells left, I remember him as a hard hitting defensive back who also had some interceptions. Transition to the basketball season was tough though and he was "encouraged" to focus on hoops.

Quinn was a great athlete

But his real strength -- Mr. Obvious here -- was basketball. Just as at IU, he was the motor that drove his high school basketball team in Illinois. I think those guys won three straight state championships.

And John Isenbarger suited up briefly. I remember him playing

..at Mackey.

Ross Hales

That's what I'm reminded of, when the football player joined Knight's roster in the early/mid 90's. Maybe a few minutes here and there, that's all.

I really hope IU wins tonight

It seems like with the whole Fuchs thing, there is even more hatred being spewed upon the team and coach by so called fans. I think as lowly about Coach Crean as the next fan, but I also think the title of fan means something.

Coach Knight Was Furious with Damon Bailey . . .

The summer before his senior year (I believe) Damon played with a touring baseball team. Don't know if his basketball skills degraded.

Why do you ask?

Whether it's football or basketball, these guys lift all year.
