Under the NIL there are kids who are now, technically, professional athletes and I'm wondering how some of the power schools like Bama, OSU, A&M, etc will handle a failing former 5-star in their 2nd or 3rd year who is not turning out to be anywhere near as good as projected. Say they'd offered the kid a ton of money to come to BFU but now BFU's budget needs it for another recruit... "Son, were gonna need to restructure your commission program." Life can be a bitch if you don't produce.... Thoughts?

The school isn't giving them money but alums and businesses. If what you posted happens the players wouldn't be happy.
Agreed.
I think the NIL sponsor controls the purse strings. If they aren’t getting the benefit of the player for their performance, they should be able to end the money flow. No different than the Ewers kid who landed a major NIL deal before he set foot in the OSU campus. A 3-year, 1.4 million deal through GT Marketing. He bolted to Texas. Ewers collected his 1.4 million but still needs to sign autographs. GT Marketing took a gamble and it may or may not pay off.

Sort of the same way playing time expectations need to be adjusted for a big prospect not producing. That's what we call, life. All of these things being experienced are the same things as before but now they have a dollar sign impact in some cases.

What will impact future money being thrown out will be those investing big money into a kid and he doesn't pan out. Is that business going to take a massive hit on their ROI? If so, does that make them shy about doing it again?

But,.... aren't the alums and school's business partners working in conjuntion with the schools and not going off "rogue" and doing just as they please?.... I think there have to be some stipulations set by the school to keep NIL partners under control. I'm sure the business partners and most alums treat their NIL "investments" the same as any other part of their business by setting annual budgets and doing their best to stick to them..... Please correct me if I'm wrong.... But, I think you're correct in that players who see their NIL compensation getting cut won't like it... but, to bad... Welcome to the REAL world!

But what is being valued and measured for NIL ROI is not athletic performance but Marketing value. Does the athlete in question sell cars, candy and clothing? Does he raise funding for charities? Does his autographed gear increase in value?

This is the core of NIL right?

According to the current rules the schools have no input on the contracts. On the other hand the contracts i would think would be renegotiated after each year with the business giving the money. After all a player that does not perform would have little value in his NIL.

I said something about this when all this started, but from a different perspective. My point was once the novelty wore off, a number of the businesses and funding sources would have Buyer's remorse once they discovered they could get a better return on their advertising and promotions dollar by spending it elsewhere.
I have never seen one of these contracts, so 'm not sure what the terms are regarding length of contract or terms of renewal.

Just think of what could happen if teams like Bama, OSU, or Clemson fail to make their Conference Championship Game and Playoff for 3 years in a row. The Well may go dry very quickly.

A picture in the car dealers showroom could well suffice for a 50k per year payday

No not all are working with schools IE the Texas QB Ewers. Some are working with schools but nothing says they have to do that. If NIL people aren't doing the payments the same way they are for other cost of business they will be losing money through NIL. The truth is they are doing it without any real experience to know what it will do to their businesses but in a couple of years will have numbers to go by.
