I have never understood why this site and 247 are based around recruiting. Sure, it can be a major part of the site, but why is so much of peoples time and thoughts centered around recruiting?

Personally, I hardly ever follow recruiting. Until they commit, I really dont care. All these recent names we have missed, yep never watched a single shot or dribble in any video.

I am much more interested about our current team, what is going on now, and what we will be this year. I would rather way more content/threads/about the current IU team. Obviously it is summer, and not much else to talk about, but recruiting is huge to a large percentage of fans, and I just don't get it.

That's all I got for a Tuesday, now off to drive around the lovely hoosier state!

I rarely watch videos, but I do like to see the rankings of kids we are recruiting and also the positions... like it's obvious from offers that we were looking for a wing shooter and post to fill out the 2023 class. I've watched videos on Cupps and part of his last AAU game, just becase I was curious since there's been pretty wide opinions on what he can be for us. Like you, I get far more interested after they commit and have watched videos on pretty much all our current freshmen.

I like to see the great players who are coming up and if they commit I am happy. But I really don't get excited until I see them on the court during a college game.

Nothing is a guarantee but recruiting is often at the very least a viable barometer of future potential. So as much as I look forward to this upcoming season, I also look forward to the seasons beyond. Even if it provides no such guarantees.

Also, there aren't many daily updates on this years team at this point so recruiting provides year round conversation topics worth sticking your head in here daily. Just another aspect of the sport that drives excitement or disappointment.

I’m not so sure that it is as big as it appears to be on these forums which I read every day of the year except back in the dark ages when we got it in newspaper form. A lot of people with a lot of posting time on here, but a small sample of the huge fan base.
That being said…..I totally agree with your post. Can’t wait for November!!

Recruiting, for me, is basically a segment of entertainment on its own. My oldest son is entering high school this year, so he'll be playing against lots of kids in school ball, and then in AAU, that will start to get talked about and covered a lot more. So it'll be pretty interesting for me to follow from that perspective.

As it pertains to IU...its always just been another part of the IU Soap Opera. Lately, I've mostly focused my time and posting on the current teams, but there have been times when the recruiting side was the top focal point. The Eric Gordon/Derrick Rose recruiting cycle, as an example.

Used to follow but portal has changed recruiting value to me I agree on the sign first then care approach. I don't follow any of it. Just my Hoosiers and the kids who represent. Go Hoosiers!

I follow recruiting a lot because recruiting is becoming far more important in the age of the Transfer Portal and NIL. I think the past glory days of veteran teams will be very rare after the COVID years cycle of extra eligibility is exhausted. Players are looking to make a career out of playing basketball and get paid, whether it is the NBA, overseas Pro Ball, or NIL money. NIL is literally going to be the main thing keeping athletes from leaving early to go pro if they are not NBA draft pick candidates. Annual Recruiting today is far more more important thsn it was in the past as you will now see constant roster turnover every year on teams at the Power 5 Conference Level including the B1G. Recruiting now includes the Transfer Portal as part of the overall recruiting strategy. I travel the state and country watching the Top HS talents in the country at Pep School game and tournaments as well as IHSAA games and State Tournament. The key is bringing in players that can contribute immediately or within their first 2 years at IU. Bench players are now going be active transfer portal candidates with no sit out year and immediate eligibility. The NCAA has drastically changed the rules of the recruiting game making annual recruiting more important than in the past over long term player development. No guarantee now players will be there long term if they are not playing with annual Transfer Portal free agency.

Because - Americans are by nature greedy and acquisitive? Keeping up with the Joneses? Dreams are more seductive/malleable/controllable than reality? Hope springs eternal?

Not commenting w.r.t. posters, but I'd guess that for the sites themselves, the prospect of highly-ranked recruits makes for better click-bait (and hence marketing/ad revenue). Substantive discussion of game execution and coaching strategy requires actually understanding the Game whereas ruminating/hyping about recruitment does not. Recruiting also runs 365 days a year and allows fans to have a sense that they're 'winning' even when/if they don't (see Kentucky).

Don't drive like I do.

I live for the follow-up interviews after the on-campus visit. The articles where they talk about how impressive the (fill in the name of the school) visits are breathtaking

I don't pay too much attention to recruiting until I see "announcement date" whether it be cutting a list down to size or final pick. I've been disappointed so many times that I now try not to get too caught up in it. It seems like such a crap shoot, a young, possibly snot-nosed teenager deciding for himself with so many others (parents, friends, coaches, agent) trying to influence his decision on where he will be happiest. I have no influence whatsoever on his decision and that's probably a good thing.

I used to follow HS bball recruiting relentlessly from about Jared Jeffries jr year in HS until about 3 years ago when I lost all interest in it. I seriously would check Peegs (sorry, he built this) once every hour. Now I check 2/3 times a day for discourse and nothing much else.

This.

Also, hyping recruiting just makes business sense. When a kid cuts his list to 9, you get to sell the story to 9 fan bases, not just 1. Plus, recruiting is less predictable, which creates more drama, which means more eyeballs.

Plus, the kids are also trying to hype themselves, so they are more willing to give interviews for free than the college kids that are often shielded by their school's PR contingent. Thus, there is more content to present.

Also, there are many schools and fanbases that aspire to have good teams than there are who actually have good teams. So, the 365 recruiting cycle allows these sites to sell the perpetual hope that next year will their year.

Same, I basically don't it's a waste of time. All information comes from those I know who do follow it.

I don’t watch the HS/AAU games on YouTube and rarely watch highlight videos (might check one out of a guy that committed) but do read about who we are targeting and how visits went (that’s how I learned that Clowney went on the best visit in history to the extent he was almost willing to pay out of state tuition to go to IU….LOL).
I realize 95% of it is a waste of time (we don’t land a lot of kids, everyone loved their visit etc) but I like to read that we are in play for major players and it is one of the barometers that show if the program is on a good trajectory.

Ah, Noah Clowney, the 6'10" PF recruit that has Alabama fans so excited. I had forgotten about him. Funny how that works. Wouldn't it have been fun looking forward to seeing him this fall in candy stripes. A candied colored clown(ey) they call the sandman, tiptoes to our gym every game. In dreams I cheer for you. Roy Orbison approves of this message.

If you follow recruiting, expect more heartbreak than ecstasy. I think Alan Henderson's press conference announcement was the most ballyhooed victory for IU fans. Yogi's was big, too, but the news leaked early, as I recall. One of the biggest press conference disappointments was that of Eric Montross. It was a major bummer at the time. He was the missing piece that would have completed the puzzle, the perfect fit, so it seemed.

I agree with this. I do not follow recruiting either.
The people that do, I think, like the in depth evaluation and may follow a player that goes to another school.
It’s all good, just sports fans.

Everyone should have to see Blue Velvet at least once in their lifetime. They had some real freaks in that show. I still get the creeps, having seen it at least four times now. I sweat in that closet with Jeffrey Beaumont. The movie starts so innocently, a severed ear in an abandoned field, and then deteriorates all to Hell from there. Roy's "Candy Colored Clown", lightbulb man, Dean Stockwell croons his way in dreams, his greatest performance.

I follow it a bit, but I don’t get worked up over it like some do. It’s always great to land good recruits, and I will watch their videos, but it’s a waste of time until they commit.

I don't follow it nearly as closely as I used to. In part because of the look at me show and the Daddy show that it has become. I am not going to tune in to see an 18 year old switch hats.

There are a few sources that I trust and I look to them as things get close. Ding

I follow it once a player signs with IU. The rest is just theatre that I choose not to participate in. And in the world of transfers, to me, it waters down the importance of landing a freshman recruit. if anything, the transfer portal is far more important than a traditional incoming freshman as there is a better scouting report due to them having playing experience at the collegiate level. Call it the Lander rule.

I used to follow relatively closely, now very little until signed.

Times are different insofar as how long kids play for one school. One reason I followed so closely in the past was to get a feel for a class of freshman student athletes that for the most part would develop as a class together for four years, and then make their senior day speeches.

now we bring in kids to play for a season (especially with the portal) and watch as senior starters leave for greener pastures. In the eta of mercenary loyalties it doesn’t make as much sense to follow the drama of recruiting.

I try to read the stuff written after visits, but try not to get too wrapped up in it on the broader spectrum. That said, I do find myself getting pulled into the discussions around needs and if a recruit fills the need. Booker as an example. Hard to get invested in some of that stuff though, given how different it is now vs. even just 5-6 years ago.

I refer to a handful of moments in one's life as 'fork in the road moments'. The decision/outcome will dictate the course of the rest of your life, and most times, you aren't even aware of the moment's magnitude at the time. For the IU program, the Montross decision was a fork in the road moment for the program. Everything is speculative, but many of us feel that having him in the program during that period would have added at least one (maybe 2) more red banners in the hall. The program would have had a much different look/feel when Cheaney and everyone else moved on. Instead their departure was the beginning of the end.

Remember, too, we lost Funderburke. Not sure now how that might have affected things, as the memories are fading.

Montross was an Indianapolis kid, Lawrence North HS, I believe. He received a lot favorable press throughout his high school career. Everyone knew we absolute.y needed him to complete the NCAA banner puzzle. There was no Plan B. For Eric to play his drama card so veiled in great secrecy, only to have us on the edge of our seats and then to put on that UNC ball cap... It was a slap in the face to Hoosier Nation. Stunned, depressed, and pissy, are just three of the subsequent emotions I can recall off the top of my head.

I also believe with Montross in the fold for the 1993-1994 team (The last team where it felt like IU Basketball) would have been a top 5 team as well. But atleast we got Todd Leary out of the deal vbg.
