Game updates: Butler at IU soccer
by Jeremy Price

FINAL

Phil Fives slides a ball across the goalmouth from the left side of the box, and Austin Panchot comes sliding in at the back post to roll the ball home ever so gently for the game-winning goal. A massive dogpile upon Panchot ensues, as the Hoosiers remain unbeaten on the season with a thrilling victory that almost makes amends for the 2-0 lead Butler overcame for a 3-2 overtime win in 2013 or the 2-0 IU lead that Butler overcame for a 2-2 draw last year. HOOSIERS 3, BULLDOGS 2

END OF REGULATION
Impossible to adequately convey the end to end action that has seen both sides within inches of finding the game-winner, but it’s been a tremendous game to watch. No sitting in to preserve a tie by anyone here. For Indiana, it’s overtime for the fifth time this season. The previous four have resulted in ties, three of them were 0-0. BULLDOGS 2, HOOSIERS 2

SECOND HALF
80th minute: Indiana gets a turnover and 3-on-2 break as Tanner Thompson springs Rashad Hyacenth on the right side of the box. His shot is blocked but the ref whistles a hand ball for a PK. Thompson’s attempt to the left side is blocked, Phil Fives storms in for a follow shot, which is also saved wide the other way where Trevor Swartz cleans up for the equalizer. BULLDOGS 2, HOOSIERS 2

75th minute: The long nightmare is over, as Indiana finds the net at last as Tanner Thompson comes wide open at the back post on a Trevor Swartz corner kick, finishing cleanly with the left foot to cut the deficit in half. BULLDOGS 2, HOOSIERS 1

62nd minute: The goal line remains an impenetrable force for Indiana, but Butler strikes quickly and twice at that. A bomb from 30-plus yards out hits the foot of an Indiana defender and deflects into the net for the first goal, then the Bulldogs make the most of the open space as the Hoosiers push forward and a 1-2 combination results in a goal for David Goldsmith, who scored his third career goal to go with an assist against IU. BULLDOGS 2, HOOSIERS 0

HALFTIME
Indiana defense still hasn’t been scored upon since late in regulation against Maryland, a span of 468 minutes and two seconds, but the Hoosier offense still finds the final touch elusive as well. In this one, IU holds a 10-6 edge in shots, but it’s 3-3 in shots on goal, while Indiana holds a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Hoosiers had some good looks go just wide in the first 45 while limiting the high-powered Butler offense. If either side gets a goal, this game will hit another gear. HOOSIERS 0, BULLDOGS 0

FIRST HALF
17:00: No score to this point, with Indiana grabbing the better of chances, but Butler finding more of the ball as the half wears on. Hoosiers hold a 5-2 edge in shots, but Butler up 2-1 in shots on goal with Colin Webb making a pair of saves on long-range blasts on a night where the damp conditions make that a nervy proposition. Grant Lillard back from a stomach illness to anchor the IU defense. HOOSIERS 0, BULLDOGS 0

PREGAME
It’s a top-10 showdown at Armstrong Stadium tonight as No. 6 Indiana hosts No. 7 Butler in a battle of unbeatens. The Hoosiers (5-0-4) are struggling to find the net despite posting four consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2007, while the Bulldogs (7-0-1) have been on fire offensively, scoring 21 goals on the season and at least two in every game since a season-opening scoreless draw vs. Louisville. This is the start of a crucial stretch of the season for Indiana, which travels to No. 2 Notre Dame next Tuesday, hosts Penn State and then visits No. 9 Louisville. These guys outshot Butler 31-13 but had to go to overtime to win this. Nice comeback win for the Hoosiers but they really need to start getting some of those shots in the net.

Indiana Beats No. 6 Butler, 3-2, in Overtime Thriller

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to come back to beat the No. 6-ranked Butler Bulldogs, 3-2, in overtime at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday night.

Down 2-0 with just 15 minutes left in regulation, the Hoosiers scored twice to force overtime and then won the match in the 97th minute to stay unbeaten on the season at 6-0-4. IU is undefeated through the team's first 10 matches for the ninth time in program history and for the first time since 1997.

Tanner Thompson scored the team's first goal, while Trevor Swartz netted the overtime-forcing score for the Hoosiers. Austin Panchot's first goal of the season won it for Indiana in the 97th minute. Phil Fives had a pair of assists on the night, while Swartz also had one. GK Colin Webb made five saves for the Hoosiers.

"We certainly had an exciting game tonight," IU head coach Todd Yeagley said following the game. "Butler is an excellent team and very worthy of where their mark is – one of the best attacking teams we've faced this year. The character of our team and the way they were relentless with the score 2-0 made me very proud."

After a scoreless first half, Butler struck first in the 59th minute, with Jared Timmer scoring the goal from 35 yards out on a deflection. Just over three minutes later, the Bulldogs' David Goldsmith pushed the BU lead to 2-0 on his eighth goal of the year.

Pushing men forward looking for the improbable comeback, the Hoosiers cut the lead in half on Thompson's goal in the 75th minute. Off a corner kick, Trevor Swartz sent a ball to the back post, finding Thompson who buried a left-footed shot from eight yards out. Thompson's fourth goal of the season made the Butler lead, 2-1.

Under five minutes later, IU drew a penalty kick after Butler was called for a handball in the 18-yard box. Thompson's stepped to the spot, but his shot was saved. The rebound came to the foot of Fives, but the Bulldogs' goalie Eric Dick made another great save, pushing the ball to the far post.

Dick was unable to stop Swartz's shot on the rebound, however, as he tied the match with a tap-in goal from three yards out, forcing overtime with his second score of the season.

In the extra session, IU was back on the attack. Working on the left side, Fives sent a great cross to the far post, finding the foot of Panchot. The sophomore beat the Butler defender to the ball, getting just enough of it to get it across and win the match for the Hoosiers, 3-2. The game-winning goal was the first of the season for Panchot.

For the match, IU out-shot the Bulldogs, 31-14, getting 12 shots on goal to seven for Butler. Corner kicks were 12-7 in favor of the Hoosiers.

Wednesday night's come-from-behind victory marked Indiana's first win from a 2-0 deficit since beating Oregon State, 3-2, on Sept. 9, 2012.

The No. 6 Indiana University men's soccer team will head to South Bend on Tuesday to face the No. 1-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

If this was basketball people would be going nuts with the performance of this team given all the talent.

They're undefeated and in the top 10. There's going to be draws. It's soccer.

The goal drought was irritating, but why should I be going nuts?

Well they have top 5 recruiting classes every year and, minus that magical run, haven't played to that level much.
