Basketball players are notoriously over "measured". There's a great website "NBA Draft Express" that contains a "measurements" sections where NBA prospects are measured separately in both their socks and shoes. The heights you read in the NBA program are invariably the players height IN SHOES. IU has notoriously over stated their players heights for years. That the players are measured in shoes in nothing new. The idea was that the players "played in shoes" so the height was what you were.. I don't have an issue with a 6-2 1/2 guy being listed as 6-3 but..... Honestly.
In the days when players wore Converse "Chuck Taylors", the difference wasn't very much. BUT...
I come from an era where you took your shoes off and measured up and your height is what it is.
In 1992 USA basketball measured the dream team and mistakenly published the heights. ICONIC players like Bird, Magic, Michael, Barkley, Ewing and Robinson didn't match their heights.
Bird, Magic and Karl Malone were all 6-7 1/2 in their stocking feet. Jordan and Barkley were 6-4 1/2 and Ewing was 6-10 1/2 and Robinson 6-11 3/4.
IU used to list Marco Killingsworth at 6-7 and at the NBA combine he was 6-5 1/2. Same for Will Sheehey.
Victor Oladipo was 6-5 in his dreams. He's 6-3 and change. Jody Hulls was 5-10 and change in his socks and dwarfed Yogi Ferrell (who's also listed at 6-0) I put Yogi closer to 5-8 than 6-0
So how does this project to football? Cody Latimer was always 6-3 at IU... And Tevin Coleman 6-1. At the combine they measured 6-2 and FIVE ELEVEN.
Recent photos at IU have had Nate Sudfeld standing next to Jason Spriggs. Until this season Nate was always 6-5 and Jason 6-7. In these pics, Nate is legitimately taller than Spriggs standing right next to him.
Now Nate is listed as 6-6, but the 6-7 Spriggs is still a tad shorter in these shots.
In the end, it doesn't make a difference as much as arm length and your skill. But it makes you wonder how they are measured and how accurate?
I can't wait for the first game.
