Has The Portal Killed Pre-Season Magazines?

There is already a deadline to enter the portal for immediate eligibility. After the deadline, you have to sit 1 year. Unless you are a graduate transfer, then you are eligible immediately no matter when you enter the portal.

I think the rosters are fairly stable now. There just isn’t enough time to write and print the traditional publications like Phil Steele‘s between now and when fall practice starts this summer.

Is the rule that you just have to enter the portal but there is no rule on when you can add a player from the portal? I thought that was the deadline the ncaa is looking to add.

The ncaa only said they were looking at adding "windows" of dates when athletes can enter the portal to stabilize the transfer market. No mention of specific dates, or requirements for destination schools.

Presumably, they want to protect origin schools by limiting the number of days athletes can enter the portal. So far, only the May 1 deadline for entries exist and any athlete can enter any time before the deadline for immediate eligibility. In my opinion limiting entries to between April 1 to May 1 and Dec 1 to Jan 1 would help schools maintain some roster stability before spring signing period and before summer work outs begin, yet allow athletes time to evaluate their options.

I used to pre-order Phil Steele, but I can’t imagine any roster being accurate until classes start these days - and even then some guys may leave when the first 2-deep is posted for Game 1.

Guess we need to know the drop/add deadlines!

Sampson James got you feeling skittish?

Internet sites killed the pre-season magazines. Why wait for the magazines to come out when you can get real-time updates and as you said, the rosters and articles are often dated by the time they hit the store magazine racks.

Phil Steele is by far the best predictor. I see this year as hard to predict but hopefully the transfer rules are adjusted next year. It's a wild west show that has gotten out of hand. I think most coaches realize this.

Transfers do need more structure than it is now. I hope it the rules do get adjusted next year and stabilize things for teams.
