Happy Gettysburg Anniversary

Meade whupped that Secesh ass - put em a run that ended at Appomattox

My folks were down south in Tennessee, then Georgia, then South Carolina, then North Carolina, then home to Illinois.

I am reading Meade at Gettysburg: A Study in Command. I am taking it slow, not a lot of reading time, Hancock has just been given command of the left wing after Reynolds' death.

So far I really like the book. It is 100% from the Union perspective, you only know what Meade knew about Lee's position and intent, which was damn little . Reynolds' job was to force the confederates to deploy for attack, then fall back to Pipe's Creek. It was a standard tactic taught at West Point to force the enemy into battle formation well ahead of the main line. It was Hancock who had the order that if the terrain was good, hold it and the army will come up to him.

I have long believed Meade was the perfect general for that battle. Unlike the ones before him, he was not going to do anything to lose. Nothing audacious, nothing to give Lee an opening. Lee would have to fight Meade's battle.

Meades greatest quality, in my opinion, was his ability to rein in his own ego and actually listen to his subordinates input and weave their views into his decision making...

The battle itself is one of those that, at least to me, clearly shows a "the hand of the Lord" quality to it...

Without the surprisingly clear headed, real time, decision making of (most of) Meades subordinates all might well have been lost on multiple occasions... The right men, at the right time, in the right place...

Perhaps the biggest turning point in the war happened on July 3 and 4, 1863. One battle in Gettysburg and one battle in Vicksburg. Two huge union victories on virtually the same day. Lee was in Gettysburg and Grant in Vicksburg. Though not as well know the union victory in Gettysburg, it gave them control of the Mississippi shipping lanes. Some notable points in Vicksburg, the Mississippi River actually changed course around 1876. (Global warming advocates not around then I guess). The largest civil war cemetery is in Vicksburg. Vicksburg was a thriving port and the majority of locals wanted it to remain that way and preferred not to secede and many were against slavery. Probably a monetary decision more than anything.

Lee should have listened to Longstreet

It seems history has shortchanged the first Minnesota. Badly outnumbered, they launched an attack that threw the rebels back, buying time for reinforcements. They did this at a fearful price. 20th Maine and Little Round Top has become the poster child for the Union defense. Maybe with Little Round Top closed for 18 months 1st Minnesota will gain increased exposure.

Have you read Gettysburg: A Meditation on War and Values, by Kent Gramm? Indiana University Press published the book in 1994. I think he teaches at Gettysburg College.

The book is basically about walking the battlefield, with some thought provoking philosophy on life and death, and America life thrown in, throughout. It’s one of my favorite books, and I keep it handy and just open it to any page at times and reread passages.

Gramm wrote another book-Lincoln’s Elegy at Gettysburg, that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

I loved that book, I have loaned it to several people. I tried to get a group at my church to read it, but it didn't work out.

Yeah, there may be more Christian teaching that relates to real life in that book than you’d find in some churches.
I preach about the Lord Jesus and who He is and what He has done. I preach about giving our hearts to Him as Lord. Where am I wrong in this? Now of course you have to take the Gospel of Jesus which is the greatest story ever told because 1 It is true 2 It is kind and precious, and relate it to one's life. It can be applied to all situations at work, home, and with family and friends.

How have you found time to go to all churches?
Bulk, you should have seen me when I was in between churches. LoL When a pastor is between churches he attends others and might have a hard time. I remember visiting a church on Easter Sunday and the pastor never mentioned the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I left the church almost in tears and was very upset. When I got home I found a local pastor on Youtube and listened to his message which was about the Resurrection. We started attending that church from then on until I came to Pennsylvania.
