One NYC cop dead, another critical from gunfire by a black male teen. Mayor Adams exclaims “stop the flow of illegal guns!” We need to repeal gun industry immunity now. Part of the reason we have it is because of gun-running in Chicago in which the gun industry acquiesced. Time to end the madness. The Black teen males are suffering enormous damage. Expose the entire gun supply chain to civil liability. That’s the only way.

I'm for that, but I don't think it will do much to reduce homicides - too many guns already on the streets.

So you’re saying take away The gun industry immunity so they will be libel? That’s a pretty liberal statement.
What makes you think the Cartels in Mexico won’t start smuggling guns!

Allowing a jury to decide liability is as conservative as it gets. Immunity is government interference with citizen jurors and IMO violates the seventh amendment.

Cartels probably will smuggle guns. We need to get serious about border integrity too.

It’s a long term issue snd solution. Sandy Hook was almost 10 years ago. Obama should have started the immunity discussion then and never let up.

Border integrity hasn’t worked on illegal drugs or aliens, I don’t like the idea of people suing a company out of business. It’s just plain wrong. Unless the firearm was defective, then that’s another problem that should be decided in court.

I don’t think the gun industry will go out of business. No industry has the immunity the gun industry has. It makes gazillions out of producing the instruments people use to kill each other. big Tobacco and Big Oxy learned about the power of civil law. Time for the gun industry to face the music.

New York City needs to bring back stop and frisk! The police know who has the guns and who does the majority of the killings. You can’t treat these thugs like their college graduates.

The police certainly should be focusing on criminals. Good call.

I gotta say no.

Trial lawyers get rich, responsible gun owners find it harder to purchase firearms and ammunition because of increased costs associated with making trial lawyers rich, and the biggest beneficiaries that haven't passed the bar exam are people who are generally recidivist criminals who are in and out of the system to begin with.

Throw the ****ing book at the people committing crime and make them serve a real sentence, do something about the drug trade (make marijuana legal and have heavy sentencing for the distribution of all other drugs), and the gun problem reduces.

Guns are not the black male problem, young black males are the black male problem. Everybody wants to duck that but for whatever reason a small percentage of them are the main drivers of violent crime in this country.

What could go wrong here?

If such suits were allowed, don't you think breathalyzers would be built into car ignition systems?
There already has been discussion on a NHTSA rule for that.
And a proposal for a law to require a NHTSA rule, which would avoid the cost benefit analysis Required for a regulation.
Blowup a ballon before you go in the bar ….
Doesn’t address driving while impaired from anything else.

Have a device you breathe into put of like a CPAP. It collects a random breath number, say breath 6. It would be hard to fool with a balloon as a balloon would have difficulty breathing in.

My mind just wandered to seeing some dudes car with like 15 random inflated balloons in his back seat. Now I would know why.
One of my soccer teammates years ago had a breathalyzer on his car. I'd hide behind his car and peak in the window. Once I'd see him start blowing I'd shake the f*uck out of the car. Couple times it threw off the reading and he'd have to sit for an hour and wait to try again. The old breathalyzers were awful

Over 25 years ago I had to piss in a cup with a man watching me do it. Thankfully I passed or I would have had to continue doing it every month.

Still quite possibly the most disconcerting feeling I've ever had.

Lol that's horrible!!! They used to piss test for ncaa games. A buddy of mine turned his shower into a pot farm. Guy was high all the time. I'd piss in a hotel shampoo bottle for him and he'd take that into the bathroom and then turn it in. They didn't watch then. He finished number 2 in scoring for all of D1. Was high all the time.

More likely a nice side gig for someone. Just hang around outside of a busy bar on a weekend night and blow into various drunk guys' breathalyzers for 20 buck a puff. Cash only.

This wasn't, ahem, athletics related in the least.

Also, never knew Lalas scored that many goals from a CB position. Tremendous.

Sure. Until the first time it malfunctioned and someone died because they couldn’t get to the hospital in an emergency.

Young black males are indeed the problem.

The conservatives don’t want to restrict their ability to have guns.
The Education establishment doesn’t give a damn about educating them.
The liberals don’t want to take away their drugs.
The old black males don’t want to parent them.
The Democrats think they help with diversity, inclusion and equity in board rooms
The country has thrown in the towel on young black males and looks overseas for students and workers.

American young black males have no chance. Young black males immigrants or refugees born and raised in Haiti or Africa do better here.

We gotta start somewhere and everywhere. Too many guns are a problem.

For academic discussion purposes only, would you trade the immunity for a couple of products liability defenses? How about misuse? How about suitability for the purpose manufactured - like the defense covering certain machinery like hog skinning equipment. Both might be a good trade for the manufacturer,

Hog skinning equipment. God Damn. I've never heard of such a thing. I'm having breakfast. There are injuries that arise from defective hog skinning equipment. Man those must be good cases

My car won't run unless it can talk to my key fob. It is the same, if something happened to my fob my car won't run and I couldn't drive to the hospital.

Not necessarily defective, but claimed to be which raises the price of negotiation sky high. A hog skinning machine and a Lot of other tools/equipment must have sharp blades to be suitable for the purpose intended. Lots of tools must spin, cut, gouge, clamp, etc. or they have no value. Likewise a firearm. If it has no discharge and doesn't send a projectile out, it has no value. You can't guard it from firing if its to reach its intended use of firing a projectile. And yes there was a big lawsuit around Logansport in a hog slaughtering operation.

Yikes that sounds awful. I used to get a number of horrific injury cases from punch presses. They were tough. Machines were old as f*ck. Had been altered and rigged over the years etc

I should note that the hog business has made great strides in their butchering technology. There is much less human touch than there use to be. I just looked at a YOu Tube video of hog slaughtering today.Machine guarding has improved to the point that it is nearly impossible for a worker to get hurt on a punch press that is properly guarded. Indiana has long been the manufacturing leader in the nation and we spent a LOT of time and effort training for IOSHA compliance. Brought the lost work injury rates and fatalities way down.

The cases would not be traditional products liability actions. The Oxy litigation would be a good analogy. I think concepts of strict liability for ultra-dangerous products could be a case. I’m thinking of the 3-wheeled ATV’s that were banned because of civil litigation. Such litigation could result in smaller magazines and maybe even limits on semi-auto fire. Gun sales will probably also become more restrictive as sellers would be at risk for nut jobs buying guns under a “should have known” standard of care.

Which leads to the rapid rise in carjackings instead of stealing cars the old fashioned way. Pick your poison.
