I've been following IU bb and fb since 67....lots of satisfying moments in bb but very few in fb.
When I think back on the coach hires more were bad than good although some were good imo but didn't work out. Since 67: Good bb hires Knight. Bad hires: Davis, Crean. Good but didn't work out: Miller. Woodson TBD.
Good hires fb. Corso, Mallory. Good hires that didn't work: Hoeppner Dinardo. Bad hires: Wyche, Cameron, Lynch, Wilson and Allen.
Historically we strike out more often than we get a hit.

I would disagree about Wyche being a bad hire—I think he might well have succeeded at IU if the Bengals hadn’t made him an offer he couldn’t refuse

what strikes me about so many of those names is that they were hired by ADs with little football background to speak of

We hired Dolson over Pat Kraft.

Too early too call Allen a bad hire. 2 good seasons and 2 bad seasons. That is way better already than those coaches you listed him with.
Part of my reasoning was the experience of the coach prior to being hired. Hiring a coordinator without hc experience is a crapshoot. This will be Allen's 3rd bad year out of 5 and he has a loosing overall record at 26-28. He is 0-3 in bowl games after missing going to bowls his 1st 2 complete seasons, thus more bad than good.

If you thought Kevin Wilson was a bad hire you don’t really know what you’re watching. Sorry not sorry.
Wilson was bad for the same reason that Allen is bad....no hc experience but he had baggage. I actually thought Wilson had a better chance of success than Allen.

At the time he was hired I was excited about Wyche but when he left I realized I should have seen that coming.

Tom Allen has been a successful Indiana university football coach by almost any metric you can come up with.

Kevin dragged us out of the mud. I will forever appreciate the job he did.

oh, and Terry Hoeppner was a great hire.

Corso was not a good hire - he lost twice as many Conference games as he won. Allen has been a good hire - he has had good success and he has elevated recruiting and the image of IU. This season has been a setback - injuries to out top 3 QB’s & 2best CB’s has made it difficult.

Corso won at Louisville. Evaluating how good a hire anyone is retroactively is bogus. @bang63 was talking about the hire at the time of the hire. In most of the cases he cited, they involved someone without head coaching experience.

Hoeppner = good hire that didn't work out. One of the metrics I use for Allen is his losing record and his poor sideline coaching decisions.

Are we returning many starters next year?
