IU has a bullseye on their back, and they are going to get everyone's best shot especially on the road. It was a sluggish start for IU as they found themselves down 8-5 early on before tying the game at 10-10 in the 1st. IU found themselves down 19-12 at one point after a MSU 8-0 run. IU had 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in the 1st and trailed 19-15 at the end of the 1st. IU opened the 2nd with two turnovers on their first two possessions of the period as MSU started the period on a 4-0 run and a lead of 23-15. IU closed within 23-21 after four straight points by Holmes. IU's turnover number was up to 10 midway through the 2nd period, but MSU had 8 turnovers also. Every time IU closed on MSU, the Spartans would respond with a basket and had a 35-29 lead when IU's Holmes scored four straight points including a basket at the horn to close the half trailing the Spartans, 35-33. Holmes led IU with 14 points at the half and IU had 12 turnovers at the half, while MSU had 10 turnovers. Fouls were even at 7 and Parrish was the only Hoosier player with multiple fouls at two. MSU hit on 55.6 pct of their shots while IU was 52.2 pct. This is the second straight conference game that IU has trailed at the half (PSU) with both of those games on the road. A stat given at the half was that MSU is 8-0 when leading at the half, and 0-5 when trailing. In the 3rd, IU tied the game at 35-35, but a couple of turnovers allowed MSU to grab a 40-35 lead with the second turnover, a charging foul, resulting in a MSU 3-pointer. IU had three turnovers in the first three minutes of the 3rd, with MSU getting 7 points off those turnovers and a lead of 44-37. Coming out of a TV timeout at the 5-minute mark, IU turned the ball over on a 10-second violation as IU found themselves down by 11 points at 50-39. IU then went on a 6-0 run to cut the MSU lead down to 50-45. An old fashion three-point play by Garzon brought the lead down to four at 52-48. IU trimmed the lead down to 3 at 53-50 when Bargesser fouled a three-point shooter which resulted in a four-point play and a 57-50 lead. IU added a FT to make it 57-51 at the end of the 3rd, and IU added five turnovers to the total in the period. Parrish got her fourth foul at the end of the 3rd. In the 4th, IU opened with a bucket by Garzon to make it 57-53. Another basket by Garzon made it 58-55 after a MSU FT. Holmes then tied the game at 58-58 on an old fashion three-point play. An old fashion three-point play gave MSU a 63-60 lead under the 7-minute mark. MSU got the lead back up to 67-60 as they went on a little run with the help of two more turnovers. Another old fashion three-point play by Holmes made it 67-63, MSU at the 4:15 mark. MSU connected on a three-point shot to make it 70-63 as every time IU closes, MSU makes a big play. IU was down 72-67 at the under 3-minute mark on another basket by Holmes. IU closed to 73-69 at the under 2:30 mark and then 75-71 at the 1:07 mark, but MSU would always respond with a basket. IU went into the fouling mode at this time with MSU, and fortunately for MSU, it was their best foul shooter going to the line as they pushed the lead up to 78-71. Scalia then hit a shot with her foot on the line to make it 79-73. Garzon then hit a 3 to make it 79-76 and MSU was then hit with an offensive foul on the inbound to give IU the ball, but Scalia would commit IU's 21st turnover of the game to give MSU the ball. Although a subpar FT shooting team, MSU hit enough of their FTs to put IU away. IU was flat in this game and committed a season high 21 turnovers and the 55.6 pct shooting percentage allowed MSU was the most this season with the next best being 42 pct. Coach Moren said before the game that the team came back from the break flat at their last practice before the game, and it showed in this one with it being turnover city. MSU probably played their best game of the season, but you get that when you are on the road and have a bullseye on your back. Holmes led IU with 32 points which I believe is a career high, while three other players scored in the double digits, but IU got just four points off the bench.
