Oh well.... We beat the Bucknuts, the we'll see how soon they make it to B-town.Was a fun thought while it lasted.....
Was a fun thought while it lasted.....
I laughed at the idea originally, but I do think they made a mistake. I think IU fans would have treated it for what it was: a novelty and they would have gotten a huge turnout in Btown because of that. Clemson is a pretty campus, but Btown in the fall would have blown it away. They went the safe route, when they had the chance to break new ground and generate a lot more excitement. They obviously could have had Sage Steele and Jeff Overton, but with a little work who knows who they could have pulled in (Cuban, Mellencamp,Crean or?). Plus I think Corso returning would have been huge. I do think it was a missed opportunity, although I don't think the game would have been close. I think Meyer would have used it as an opportunity to run up the score chasing a NC, and that was probably a big factor: they didn't want a dud of a game. Too bad!
Why would Corso's return be huge????
1 bowl game in 10 years???? Everyone's treating him like some returning hero???
The whole OSU picture thing is still an embarassment! I wonder how many 'fans' would put up with Crean or any IU basketball coach doing that. Imagine Blackmon scores the first basket at Duke in Dec. Crean immediately calls a TO, brings the team on the court and takes a pic of the scoreboard. What's the message to the team? You're not good enough to compete! He would most likely be fired the next day...fans would be irate! But Corso gets a pass??
IU's fans are traditionally late arriving to the stadium, and the students don't show up at all. Had the fantasy of Gameday actually come true, I'd be concerned that there would be 100 people standing behind the GD crew, wth 90 of them being tOSU fans, one or two waving Washington State flags, and the rest in IU gear. With a 9:00am start prior to a 3:30 game, the crowd might not have been very crowded.Half the Game Day crowd would likely have headed for an early tailgate session at the first commercial break, anyway ....
Yeah, that was never going to happen. I got a few laughs at people thinking it would though.
Go Hoosiers
Corso is what he is, and I'd guess he recognizes it: a personality. He's a less annoying football version of Dickie V and he's universally embraced by CFB fans everywhere. That horse has been dead a long time, get off it!
PS. we put up with CTC cutting down nets after a loss, so yeah.
Seriously? Please list all of LC's ethical lapses while the coach at IU.Whats the difference between the two?
Both brought embarassment to IU.
You understand that Gameday doesn't take place at the stadium, right?Half the Game Day crowd would likely have headed for an early tailgate session at the first commercial break, anyway ....
This is just so wrong. There were thousands of tweets about this. Students were planning to camp out. If you don't think people want to be on tv, I don't know what to tell you. It's not like it was 5 people getting excited about this...it was a big deal all week.IU's fans are traditionally late arriving to the stadium, and the students don't show up at all. They can't get to noon games, so I doubt many would have made it to an 0900 GD start, especially since booze would be off limits at the location. Moot point, but the lack of student support of the program is appalling, and I doubt GD would have changed that. Would be happy to be pleasantly surprised by a different result, though, and maybe it will happen someday. For now, it would be nice to just see students get inside the stadium on time and support the team this weekend. This is just so wrong. There were thousands of tweets about this. I don't disagree about the pathetic student support, and if an appearance on GameDay is earned by being a top-20 team then we haven't earned that status. Those things being said, I still think GD missed a golden opportunity by not choosing B'town this weekend. They can't get to noon games, so I doubt many would have made it to an 0900 GD start, especially since booze would be off limits at the location. And you should bone up on your history. You should really put your brain back in before you start typing.
Without question, it would have been fantastic for IU. I just don't think there was anything compelling from a college football standpoint, and that's really what ESPN's focus is.I don't disagree about the pathetic student support, and if an appearance on GameDay is earned by being a top-20 team then we haven't earned that status. As was pointed out, the IU campus is a special place in early October and with OSU ranked #1 and us sitting at 4-0 I think the game is compelling enough. Given that the other logical choices are places GD has already frequented and will surely do so again, I think IU would have been a great choice. GameDay is pure entertainment and IU students appreciate entertainment (sadly much more so than football). I think they would have risen to the occasion and made a great morning crowd - if for no other reason than that this is likely a once-in-a-student-lifetime deal. With Herbstreit a former Buckeye and Corso a Hoosier icon ( for his personality if not his coaching record) it would have been a good show and a great opportunity to let IU fans return some love.
I was an undergrad when LC was coaching there and my roommate played for him. People loved him. It was really sad to not see IU succeed at a higher level during his tenure. Even so, the 1979 team and Holiday Bowl win is one of the few real bright spots in our dismal history. Looking back on it, given the scheduling at the time and the state of the program when he arrived, IU was pretty competitive and had some great players and some big wins in his era. It would have been special to have him back and at 80 years old, that window is getting pretty narrow.
No knock on Clemson or ND, but those two teams will always be in the GameDay picture. I don't see anything really special about that game that makes it a compelling story. I imagine Coach Wilson and staff are relieved. If I were them I'd rather not have the distraction and not give OSU a reason to focus on this game. But for everybody else associated with IU, this would have been a lot of fun and a great promotional tool for IU football, the University as a whole, and the entire Bloomington community.
I believe he only had winning seasons in two of his ten years, so he really wasn't a winning coach at IU.Corso was perfect for iu at the time. History shows how difficult it is to have a winning team at iu and Corso did it even taking the team to a bowl game. He had a great personality and was a winning coach, what more can be said.
And you should bone up on your history.
Oh is this about ethics now? How about 10 years, 2 winning seasons, 1 bowl game? But gosh, Corso's a great guy and the players really liked him so years of losingSeriously? Please list all of LC's ethical lapses while the coach at IU.
Was Lee Corso just compared to Kelvin. Sampson?
LC: 10 years, 2 winning seasons, 1 bowl game. Would you tolerate your basketball coach having a similar type record? Why don't you help us out with that history. I'm all ears.
You claimed he "brought embarrassment" to IU, and you compared him to a coach who was fired from IU for ethical lapses. Perhaps you simply made an ignorant and ridiculous pairing of two former coaches, or maybe your intentions weren't quite so innocent. Either way, you were way, way off the mark.Oh is this about ethics now? How about 10 years, 2 winning seasons, 1 bowl game? I thought your information was going hate all the coaches that haven't won at IU? That seems like it could be a full time job.
I don't hate Corso. I just remember sitting in Memorial Stadium, getting the hell knocked out of us! Again, why would it be so fantastic if he returned? So do you hate all the coaches that haven't won at IU? That seems like it could be a full time job.

A shared history of what is my point? He's moved on and we've moved on. He's found a better gig and hopefully we've found a better coach. Still, he was very popular when he was here (incredibly so for a coach with such a poor record) and now he's followed and loved by a generation or two who have no memory of his time at IU. The kids just know he was IU's coach. No ones talking about naming the stadium after him, just acknowledging a shared history.

You make me really sad to be an IU fan sometimes. What exactly are your expectations of the student fan base? To give you some perspective on this season; I was born in 1995, and this was the first time IU had won 4 games in a row since 1993. Unfortunately i wasn't alive in the 60s for our rose bowl, so i have never in my life seen a relatively successful IU team. Granted, I'm one the most loyal/knowledgable student fans out there, but i promise you there are many others. You will see on saturday that students are starting to take notice; the team has proven themselves to be pretty solid this season so far and students will go to the game. I see you shit on student attendance time and time again, but we literally have never known anything different than losing in the span of my lifetimeThey can't get to noon games, so I doubt many would have made it to an 0900 GD start, especially since booze would be off limits at the location. Well, not many students support the team by attending and remaining at the games. They're more than happy to tailgate and drink like fish, but actually supporting their school requires a winning team as a prerequisite (according to you). My expectations for students are that they show up on time, yell like crazy for their classmates throughout the entire game, and then enjoy their tailgate after the game concludes. Apparently that's too much to ask of some, as is even knowing the name of the quarterback. That makes me kind of sad.You make me really sad to be an IU fan sometimes. Obviously theres no changing your mind on this. I'm telling you it will be better this week, and you're ignoring the positive side of that and referring to student attendance for games against three low Division 1/FCS schools. I'll look for you on saturday as the angry guy at the fields hexing the students at 2pm for not starting to enter the stadium.Well, not many students support the team by attending and remaining at the games.
