I don't believe there's a rule that the Redshirt year must be used on a freshman. Perhaps a quarterback gets injured in the fourth game of his senior season. It would be great if he could still redshirt. And hopefully there is another four-star quarterback sitting on the bench.

Obviously this situation will be used at every position.

Put the best players on the field now. Hopefully this team will look much different four years from now. If I was coach Allen I would not be willing to take a speculative risk about something four years down the road

With respect to your first paragraph, I think you're right. A kid's eligibility is four years and four games so, yes, a fourth year guy who suffers a season ending injury in one of the first four games could avail himself of the rule and come back the next year. Most of the talk (and impact) of the new rule relates to freshmen, though.

Not sure what you mean about Allen and "speculative risk." If you're talking about QB, Allen and staff have made a determination that Ramsey - - as the starter - - gives IU the best chance to win. Accordingly, he's the #1. If, for whatever reason, it becomes necessary for Penix to play more than four games, they'll play him. I guess I'm missing your point.

Haven't seen any evidence that this is not the mindset. We might also try to score as many points as we can and limit the opponents to as few as possible.

I think there is no substitute for game day experience for a quarterback.
Penix will be better next year if he plays in all of the games this year. So even if Ramsey is a better quarterback this year I'm saying that they should still play Penix and not worry about his red shirt. It is more important to have two quarterbacks that are both ready to go this year. And it will provide better competition for the next two seasons.

believe me, the coaches are going to play the best players they've got now. they aren't waiting for anything.
